Mediocrity a common commodity in these parts?

Daniher for years pushed his development tag-line...it ended up in what I termed "Development Myopia". My question was...we develop blokes to then unload them at ripe old age of 27 for more blokes who we will develop then unload no doubt when they hit their prime at...what for it...27....how about letting them play great footy in their prime - and backing them. MFC has a habit of burning club champions... Mr Woewodin is a pretty good example.

Word is one senior ex-player took particular umbrage at TJ being traded. But that is another post.

When TJ came to the Club, it had a number of strong leaders in Lyon, Stynes, Viney and Neitz. No one for a second doubts his talents but in 10 years at the Club he has deliver in patches and in all was a mediocre player overall coupled with a number of off field issues packages the player as someone who has plateaued in his current environment. However I am glad you are happy with his game on Saturday. His last two games with Brisbane sum up his time at MFC. Too little of the sublime too much of the ordinary.

I doubt whether MFC has a habit of burning champions, we kept White and Yze well passed there use by dates. For once MFC got it right when it offload Woewodin where he was starting to wane as a player. And as Fan said itr could be a win /win for both player and Club.

And WOW an ex senior player took umbrage at TJ being traded. Go on. How do we keep them all happy?

I Felt ill Watching Trav on Saturday night. He was on fire not only the possessions but what he did with them. Our Forward line is Bare right Now. I know its the wait and be patient but it hurt to watch TJ take control.

At least with the beard he looked like some one else!! Brad Miller must learn to kick...PLEASE! for this year at least he is it!

Whether mediocrity is a common commidity in these parts is beside the point.

Some might argue TJ epitomises many of the problems we've had in recent times anyway - not particularly hard or accountable, struggled with a tag, but kept some supporters happy with flashes of brilliance in an inconsistent career.

Regardless, TJ is 29 in a few months and - TJ or no TJ - we were going to struggle last year and will struggle this year. If you look at the big picture, having TJ isn't going to make any real difference to Melbourne's story. TJ's a great fit for a team who was - or thought they were - a contender. Likewise, pick 16's a good result for a team that's rebuilding.

Whether right or wrong, I certainly don't think your view is a majority one.

Travis dropped..again....by Brisbane. That's three coaches that have put a cross beside his name recently. Bailey never wanted him. Matthews dropped him. And Voss has lost patience with him.

There's a number of posts here that look rather silly.

TJ was talented downhill skier and I am rapt we traded him for a first round pick. Long overdue in my view.

The words sublime and oozes class seem strangely out of place.

I realise we didn't trade Trav for Grimes, but the results are worth at least a quick comparison. I wouldn't say Grimes' output is incredible, but the early signs already point to the trade not being a blunder...

I'm one of these people that looks on the Hawks' recruiting with huge envy. My greatest jealousy and respect comes for how they handled both the Hay and Rawlings trades. Both were HUGE wins for the club. Mind-numbing actually considering both players did basically nothing, yet they netted first rounders who went on to play...

I realise the TJ trade is small fry in comparison, but it still pleases me that we are on the same, or at least a similar path.

Was Cameron Wood to Collingwood part of the trade? Gee, that's worked out well for the Poys. Trav dropped (and sporting a hideous growth on his dial), Wood can barely crack a game, Grimes looking good. What the experts call a "loss, loss, win" situation. Touch wood.

I agree with where you are coming from DD.

However I think it can be broken down into two parts. The decision to trade TJ for pick 14 (Great decision and good value). Then there is the decision on who you take with that pick 14. (We took Grimes). I think Grimes is going to be a beauty for us.

In that respect it was a win/win for us. Now had we traded Cameron Wood like the Pies had done then we would have been back a square one.

I think there is a number of parallels between the Hawks and MFC decision on senior players. Work where you are going in the future list wise and determine which players you believe are worth more to other Clubs than your own and secure the best trade you can. With all due respect Hay had a couple of good seasons at FB and was AA one year I think. Rawlings I agree.

However I think Hay and TJ represent the sort of player that tickles your nuts that they will be a good player but ultimately wont and dont deliver. (I suspected this with PJ but thats another discussion).

For the record Collingwood traded pick 14 to Brisbane for Cameron Wood. (Boy they must feel shafted on that. ). Brisbane on traded to MFC for TJ. (Boy they must feel shafted on that. ).

FWIW, I would have thought that Voss discipline and style would be a stumbling block for TJ. I think he will be gone past his present contract at the Lions.

Very true and one only has to look at the Jolly trade for pick 15, which in isolation was good at the time. It looks weak now due to Jolly's career and one Lynden Dunn. Bell at pick 14, which we received for Woewodin, is another shining example.

I can't help that either. Indirectly it sort of is TJ v Grimes. I'm sure Dappa that we'll get another 10+ years out of it too. Good timing really the whole trade.

Just out of interest and I know it proves nothing yet. Cameron Wood had a good half-a-game of football against West Coast last week on Dean Cox. I don't have the exact stats yet, but I heard last night he had something like over 20 Hit Outs against Cox. In 50% game time football, that's pretty good. Just thought I'd throw that in to the mix.

Grimes has played 5 games, give him a go, he will be better than Trav just because of attitude and l was one of his biggest fans

Trav didn't need a change of team/scenery.

Trav didn't need a new coach. Or two.

What Trav needs is a 'new attitude' to see his football improve & consistency.

I doubt Brisbane would be happy. Tigger has played like a Col Sylvia clone and his career is winding up.

They gave up a draft pick in a deep draft and could've had a decent player like Grimes.

Soon Grimes will be a star and Trav will be retired, having not pushed them over the top. If the aim wasn't to do that, what was the point of the trade?
