The President and the board has been in charge for about 4 months. The coach, Football Manager, 2 assistants, and 2 development coaches have been here 9 months.

You don't ruin a culture in 4 months, especially when its already "nothing" as the AFL told Gardner.

We need people who are passionate about the club, and people will say "he already turned us down, how does that show commitment?"

Unlike Fox, who turned us down twice and went and asked the AFL whether we were worthy of him, Schwab wanted a break from footy and was unsure of his desire to leap back into a CEO position.

Hopefully he is going somewhere quiet until October, and then he needs to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

Erasing $3Million off our debt also helped our cause..

I cant beleive some people not happy with this appointment, he is a great footy man, and has done HUGE things at freo.

Not the same man who was with us before, far better for his experience..

Very highly rated all over the league, and the AFL is apparently very happy with this appointment, this is yet another great step for our wonderful club, what an amzing 2 months we have had, things looking great off field, and promising on it!!

Its a great appointment, and was made with due consideration, and was very closely looked over by the AFL!!

I hope (desperately) that this is right decision, but I do understand the queries from the outer.

But it is now done, decision made, and hopefully Schwab (& Stynes) can earn our respect by pulling this club back together off field, and as someone said earlier in regards to the "mates" angle, who cares, as long as this group of people have in their collective heads what is best for the club in the long and short run.

Looks like MATES of MELBOURNE was more than just a networking idea set-up by Connolly, Stynes and Lyon. It is the ethos of what once was a great club. Watch out for Grinter to get a role at the club ASAP. I am not joking.

How bout we get behind the club and support it. What are YOU doing for the club? Did you apply for the role?

The new board led by J Stynes is trying to steer us to safety doing things they feel are right to help us survive. I for one, even if I might like the appointment, will back them all the way. Only time will tell if it is a success or a failure but these people will not die wondering and with what if's. They are getting in there making calls that they see are for the greater good of our club, not just to get all there so called mates back. One minute people are pissing and moaning about not enough Melb people being involved the next it's a "jobs for mates" place.

We want Melb people at the Melb footy club. You negative people amaze me.... "they are not doing enough, what they are doing is wrong.." we have seen ever since the failed merger our club go backwards off the field. This is our last throw of the dice and we have one of the most seasoned football administrators now running things. I for one will support the club and offer any assitance to them.

Cards..I dont think a lot of people necessarily dislike the appointment ..I dont particularly ( dislike it ) Its more about the , how to put it, strange route to its happening. Irregardless of like or dislike..or hope ..or lack there of.. many of us are still well within our curiosities to want a better understanding of all this.

I'm happy with the appointment.

If anyone isn't sold on his CEO credentials look at Fremantle off the field before him and look at the state they are in as he leaves.

The guy knows what he is doing.

The new board gets a tick from me for the way this has happened - being ruthless enough to pull McNamee when they didn't believe he was the right man for the job, and then getting the person they wanted. Time will tell how success the moves are, but I like the approach.

SEN had an interview with Schwab earlier this evening.

On his 'u-turn' -

Responding to his apparent 'u-turn' on the job offer, Schwab confirmed that he had pulled out last week. However, he said he had met with some of the Board on Saturday(?), and had changed his mind. Schwab said that the calibre of Board members impressed him, noting the fact they were passionate about Melbourne, and were realistic about the plight of the Club despite being new to the industry. Schwab admitted that there was an emotional plea (the fact that the MFC might not be around much longer), and that the challenge of the job was part of the allure.

SEN asked who specifically had managed to get him to change hid mind, and specifically who of Stynes, Lyon, and CC had nabbed him. While indicating that he was impressed by Styne's Debt Demolition, Schwab said that it was actually a couple of the Board members had a big say in him coming to the Club (I don't think he mentioned them by name).

Schwab explained while he respected Stynes, and had an involvement with him when at MFC previously, Schwab hadn't looked Stynes up socially since the late 90's. IIRC, Schwab said that he hadn't really spoken to CC about the job, as he had pulled out of the process earlier on, before calling him today to let him know he was interested.

Other points -

Schwab talked about the fragmentation that occurred around the Club post-merger, suggesting it was a very difficult time to be involved in the Club, and said that there seemed a 'unity of purpose' this time around.

Schwab spoke about the financial situation of the MFC, and labelled it 'dire'. However, he suggested it that it was no worse than Richmond's 'SOS' campaign, and Fremantles $8M debt. Echoing Stynes, he said that making the Club profitable - financially independent - was the #1 priority.

When asked a question 'as an outsider, who hasn't had time to look at the books', Schwab indicated that you'd be silly not to look at the books before taking on a job like this, and said that he had looked at them.

Schwab said that Melbourne had not been able to put together a sustainable business model since the 60s, and mentioned Richmond's arrival at the MCG as a turning point. When asked about Hawthorn and Fremantle's turn-arounds, he said that there may be similarities, a business model tailored for Melbourne needed to be created. However, Schwab indicated that there are similar things that get people interested in being involved in a Club.

Fwiw, I thought Schwab came across pretty well.
