Tom Hawkins for #1 pick

A few people are gonna be pretty upset when Watts spends most of the coming year in the VFL and at school finishing year 12.

But frankly, it's best for him and for the future. If he gets a few games in 09 to acclimatise, does another preseason and comes in and wins the Rising Star in 2010, I'll be happy enough (assuming we grab him).

Hmmm... a few people have talked this draft up as being on a level with the 2001 super-draft.

It might be worth noting that 2001 was the draft that made Geelong. In fact, it will go down in history as the best drafting effort ever. Consider -

pick 8 - J. Bartel

pick 17 - J. Kelly

pick 23 - C. Gardiner

pick 24 - S. Johnson

pick 40 (f/s) - Gary Ablett Jr.

pick 41- H. Playfair

pick 69 - M. Mcarthy

pick 81 - D. Johnson

bizarrely enough, they also picked up Andrew Carazzo in the rookie draft.

Melbourne picked up Molan, Armstrong, Rogers and Miller, for the record. And thus we fell short in '04-'06

Chances are we'll only have four picks in the 2008 National Draft (plus PSD Pick 1) but they'll be pretty good picks (1-17-19-35).

Dominating at VFL level doesn't translate to being a competent player at AFL level. Just ask Mark Jamar or Paul Johnson. There is a significant gap between the two, even more so at Geelong. Hawkins has yet to play in the AFL like he has at the VFL.

And it is true that he can't crack into the Geelong team. He has been fit for most of this year, yet Lonergan and Gamble have taken his spot in the team.

Grat point, and well said..

This is my point! what has he done at AFL level?? not alot, yes hasnt had a hell of alot of chances, but enough!

Absolutely NO ONE inside the league would give a top 5 pick in this draft for him, let alone no.1!

They'd probably still be on top lol

Lol..

I know what you mean, but it set them up to become the side they are, thats the point..

Remeber, the moral here is, you dont trade no.1 pick in a draft like this away for a bloke who still has question marks, both with his overall ability on the big stage, and whetehr he can get his body right! :)

You would be naive to overlook what they got in 1999 as well

13 Corey

31 Chapman

38 Ling

47 Enright

and they still managed to blow pick 15 on David Spriggs and survive the fall out.

Tom hawkins for the number 1 pick?

What the hell.

Hawkins is fat, slow and has the turning circle of a Boeing 747.

Jack Watts has it over him in every area.

Can you imagine Jack Watts joining Geelong? Wow. They would win the next 10 flags.

Tomahawk is from the Kent Kingsley / Scott Welsh school - the players who look good against us and rack up a ton of possessions/goals, but aren't really that good. Pass.

C for C. Scott Welsh is a good player, alot better than Kent Kingsley IMO. Tomahawk is still young and can take a good pack mark overhead - where as the other two have trouble doing that, Tomahawk - he'll be a decent player for Geelong's future.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
