What is the MFC doing to promote the 150th Anniversary Game?

The Round 19 game between Melbourne and Geelong was supposed to be a celebration of our 150th year. I know it's been shunted sidewards by the Olympic Games opening but surely a game at the MCG against last year's premier team and this year's runaway ladder leader should be treated as a game we should be strongly promoting. If every person we get over 20,000 attendance is $ in the coffers then we should be going all out to get a crowd of 40-50k.

Or is everybody at the club simply interested in the tin rattling?

The club's efforts to promote the Geelong game will be a test for Jim Stynes and his board. I hope they don't let us down.

Now you have a point... write to the club, that gives them a week to think about it. Also I think it is going to be an early start because of the Olympic Games and that needs to be out to all and sundry too !!!

I can just see Vlad saying to the effect "...well, we give Melbourne a friday night game at the G and they can't get anyone along.."

Will not mention that

(A) the game is TV live against the gate - not allowed even for huge sellouts by the way

(B) the Olympic opening ceremony starts as the game is due to finish.

Maybe the only thing that will save the gate is a massive boycott of the Olympics on account of China's appaling human rights record.

I would be surprised if we get over 25K.

He prob set this up so we would get the smallest gate for a friday night so next year we can have 22 sunday games, all twighlight.

the game is directly after the corner eggleston cup which is a match between melbourne grammar and scotch, being the first recorded game of AFL...a fairly big crowd is expected for this (being the oldest rivalry in football) and hopefully the crowd generated for this match will stay along for the melbourne geelong match, the celebration of the two oldest teams in the AFL

I hope so Nug.

Last time Grammar Scotch played before a Dees Cats game, basically only schoolboys were in attendance, and the Melbourne Geelong crowd would have been no more than 30,000. Mind you it was a very, very cold night

Maybe they should show the ceremony live on the big screens and in the social clubs after the game. I know i would be hanging in the social club after the game watching it buying food and beer. The MFC need more money making functions (not $6000 tix stuff) that the general punter can get to and still make some coin out of it while bringing the supporters together in a social atmosphere.

At least you can go to the match. I'm a supporter 600km away and it won't even be on TV here at any time. 7/Prime are preceding the opening Olympic ceremony with some fluff program about China and following that with some old movie. Thanks 7 & AFL.

Just have to hope a bit-torrent of the match appears in the following week.

Ironic that this game is meant to be one of the AFL's "150th year" celebration matches, marking the the first official game of football was played.

Now with the Olympics opening ceremony it seriously jepardise our attendance, on the plus side i recon there'll be a good audience, due to the Olympics being on afterwards, tuning in to watch us (probably get smashed).

BINGO!!!

They absolutely must make clear that the aftermatch function will include a big screen of the opening ceremony.

for the record, I'm making the trip down to Melbourne, partly as a protest against how damn boring opening and over-hyped opening ceremonies are.

I can see Bruce McAveny now - 'and now we come to the 13th century Mongol invasion, oh... beautifully done, the slaughtered peasant are so evocative of China's rich culture... and the Great Leap Forward! CLEVERRRRRR!!!'

Well Vlad will be making any comments about this game from a long way away, he wont even be in the country for the codes 150th anniversary round, but instead sipping prawn cocktails while kowtowing to our Communist overlords...

If we can get 50k to a match between two non-finalists on a Saturday, I'm sure we can 35-50k between the decades best team on a Friday night.

hi gOLLy,

I agree with you on both matters, I mean not all of us dees fans live in the cbd, but that doesn't mean we won't turn up on friday night to cheer on the mighty dees, no doubt I will be there... as for the functions, it would be great to have something where we can meet and help the club as well... I mean, on saturday afternoon I got stuck in the middle of the dons cheer squad, which sucked, but at least the dees were kicking some goals and there was plenty I could cheer about too :D ...

I'm really looking forward to the game against the cats. They're the benchmark, obviously Bailey wants our young team to play quite a bit like them. We've got a way to go (nowhere near as far off as it was at start of season, however).

This is a brilliant way for our youngsters to improve.

I think it will be much more of a contest than most gooses will predict. We won't win because we're missing too many experienced players (Rivers, McLean, Robertson etc etc) and we don't have a forward target. But I'm picking the Dees anyway.

No way any Olympic opening ceremony in China of all places will keep me from the 'G on Friday!

Go Dees!!

I'll definately be there Friday night, i'll be hanging for it all week! Its great to FINALLY have a Friday night game.

I think we can take it to 'em

They will crank up the publicity by Tuesday, coinciding with the 150 - Debt Demolition, not to mention the Casey council meeting and outcomes. I think it will be a really positive news week. And we might just serve it up to the Cats on Friday Night.

So do I, its the ONLY Friday night game this season! OK Mr Demetriou!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Esssendon draws more people to the G than Geelong does. It's also our home game, meaning some Geelong members might not get entry.

Yes, our season is shot to bits, but more than any other game this year we need every single person to turn up. Our only FNF and night game for the year, we need at LEAST 40K to give the club as much profit as possible.

I don't give a toss what you're doing, COME TO THE DAMN GAME!

I don't want to see any Victorian Melbourne supporters posting at all on here between 7 and 10 on Friday.

Go Dees

While your passion is shared on this forum, it is misdirected, these sort of comments need to be directed towards the people that just think buying the membership is enough.

Yeah get to the game! Drag along as many people as you can with you.

well being in brisbane i cant but i hope every vic dee supporter is there to make it great on the TV which ill be watching like every game! Having 10+ friends over for a bbq and drinks for the game and opening ceremony. Im going to be trying to recruit new members for next year!! So make it look good :)

Excuses.... nah, nice work on the recruiting front

We can win this, could be the biggest upset in history. Bottom vs Top. David v Goliath.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
