Agree - perhaps not academicians? Particularly Oliver.

Strong saving mark by number 5, and he later cleaned up an errant Barassi handpass - what a memorable month was starting to unfold for Neil Crompton! And talking about Barassi: loved his intensity standing the mark; the mark he took at 2.39 was brave, with a ruthless John Peck steaming at him from the other direction ("a nice easy chest mark" according to the commentator!!!!); and the subsequent handpass was an eye opener for me, as those were the days of the "don't handball on the backline!" golden rule - and this was before the 1970 GF where Barass allegedly invented the handball game.

Exactly my thoughts as I watched the game.

When will Melbourne break these embarrassing records?
Tim replied to praha's topic in Melbourne Demons
The much vaunted 2006, and we did it 5 times that year. That is, we had separate winning streaks of 5 and 6. -
When will Melbourne break these embarrassing records?

6 years and 5 days ago, when we beat Richmond, having beaten Brisbane and handed out the biggest defeat Roos suffered at the Swans. We thought we were on a roll. This time it's different. Please.... -

Yep, I'm sure that's the way Bucks is explaining it to Maguire. -

Brisbane 2002? Sydney 06 at SCG when Rivers gave away a late 50 to nearly cost us the game. 2006 was a year where a lot of these hoodoos were set. -
Nice team EG - I think Django might be fretting, though...

Wow, key forward takes 24 marks and kicks 1-0, the other key forward grabs 13 marks and we kick 10 goals all up. Wonder how many went out on the full with those two shank experts in action.

Often, on the basis that the team would be in trouble if the #1 went down during the notional game against Mars, which incidentally is where too many of the footy scribes live.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - MITCHELL WHITE
Tim replied to The Red Fox's topic in Melbourne Demons
Not sure this is the best idea. HIs last game was against the same opponent at the same venue, and it looked as though the coaching staff didn't know where to hide him. Ended up going forward; looked like a shot duck, unable to fit into a new style of play. -
The Jesse Hogan Panic Room - all contract talk here
Tim replied to Grapeviney's topic in Melbourne Demons
Personally, I'm more worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow. Sorry, wrong song. -
Was that the one where he nearly made the smother on Jenkins on the goal line when Jenkins got the Joe the Goose? That episode showed the high level competitiveness he has - most would have stayed on the ground, accepted the inevitable and not gone on to the next contest. It was the tackling equivalent of unrewarded running.

Agree with that, especially the bolded bit. Along these lines, Brisbane supporters should build a statue to the chairman of selectors at Fitzroy who pushed for Brian Brown to get his 50th and penultimate game for the Royboys at the Lake Oval in June 1981, a 10 disposal affair that delivered the opportunity for young Jonathon to join the old man's firm and help the Lions three-peat.

Yeah, Whateley should have asked Brereton the obvious follow up question to clarify whether it was a "gut feeling" or was a view based on some evidence. Annoying. -
Good call, fellas. Any equally helpful suggestions for the Selection Committee for next week?

1988 finals wins over Collingwood & Carlton
Tim replied to Bring-Back-Powell's topic in Melbourne Demons
Just shows, don't rely on memory! Must have had a dose of MFCSS - 6 goals up at quarter time and my memory is a bad one. http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1988/031119880917.html -

I thought that was the 87 Prelim. In 88 Carlton kicked first to the end where G Lyon kicked that huge torp in the last, and they were about 6 goals up at quarter time; suggests the wind stayed the same way. Btw, after what we've been going through the last decade it's seems hard to imagine that we ever played finals, let alone won them and made GFs! -

That year we beat Carlton and Collingwood each three times. Probably a unique stat. -

7 during 2010-12 according to one list I saw, including 2 noms each to Blease and Gysberts. Those 2 are in a very small group of players with 2 noms, the others being Nathan Jones, Michael Hurley, Luke Power, Mark Le Cras, Duncan Kellaway, Craig Callaghan and Michael Braun. Pick the odd ones out.

Indeed. Some small consolation that we didn't get totally pantsed on the scoreboard, i.e., there was effort maintained till the end despite being outclassed. Not something that we have been accustomed to these last 10 seasons or so.
