Or, you could have written in the early 1960s..."I tend to agree with this. How anybody could think that the USA are afraid of Japan's push into car making is beyond me. The USA are the incumbent and their brand there is strong." I suspect David Gallop (who I think has the hardest job in Australia) would be worried as much about the AFL's aggressive approach as he would be concerned about the inability of his superiors to realise what the NRL has to do to protect its position.2 points

Yes, it's going to take 12 months ... but I'm still excited by 2012. How can we not be, whole new FD, fitness dept, maturing players ... Really looking forward to it. But Neeld ... certainly talks the talk. To publicly start naming names like that ... ouch. Aaron Davey must be looking for a hole to crawl into ...1 point

Yeats, Campbell and Eishold made monumental blunders in the last quarter. WJ is right. The Bucky kick was the worst. I still cant watch any of that game.1 point

I think this is brilliant. If he does have a bung knee then we have saved a fair bit of our cap and got two early round draft picks instead of a player who may struggle to reach his potential because of the knee. If he doesn't have a bung knee then good on the MFC for playing the mind games that other clubs do all the time. And if the MFC have upset Sheedy - I am very very happy.1 point

Both valid points, although I see a material difference between not "being afraid" of the competition compared with being a complacent incumbent (e.g. USA car manufacturers). It is possible for the NRL to simultaneously not be afraid of the AFL (my contention) and also not be complacent in their current position of relative strength (your contentions). Their fixturing, albeit minor tweaking, suggests they are being somewhat proactive, not necessarily reactionary and scared (certainly not yet). This overwhelming perception that the AFL always will always win its battles and that it will keep spending until GWS works is also a myth. The advantage of the AFL's "war-chest" is grossly over-stated as the footing isn't close to even and consequently the NRL will not need to spend anywhere near the same amount of cash to maintain its relative position (as their brand is already established the equivalent of the AFL's one-off start-up costs have already been spent). And in any event, big piles of cash don't guarantee success - there are countless examples of corporates that toast billions of dollars on projects that ultimately fail. I'm sure they have a walk-away point.1 point

haha! Imagine if that kick had dribbled out of bounds. Would the Aints even exist today?1 point

Debt in and of itself is not the issue. If you go into debt spending money on items that do not cover the accrued debt with either income or asset recoupment, you are on the highway to ruin. The Bentleigh club acqusition covers the debt on the asset side many times over, and has promise to do so with income as well. It is simply not a problem. The Filth have an enormous debt by any other club's standards, but it is not a problem to them as the assets acquired by the debt cover the costs.1 point

I think the AFL's viewpoint is - which has been expressed before - is that this project is a 20-30 year project. They understand the hurdles to overcome, and they'll fund it as necessary until it's on it's own two feet. They know they might not be successful in the first few years. They will support GWS until the Western Sydneyites learn to love the game and become superior sports lovers - like Melbournians before them. This is a generational change project.1 point

Absolute garbage Thomo. What he does away from the club is irrelevant. AFL footballers are well paid because they good at playing football. Just because you get the chance top lay at the highest level doesn't make you an angel, it doesn't make you a role model for the kiddies. The media and the marketing guys do that and expect you to conform to what makes them more money! How many elite level sportsmen out there were (or are) dead set scholars, they are generally the guys not doing schoolwork, going out and getting drunk on weekends at 15 years of age, but all of a sudden we expect footballers to be mother Theresa. No. If we want to succeed at football - you need a bit of good old fashioned mongrel, which is mutually exclusive from what the marketing guys want. Professional sportsmen all over the world have a degree of FIGJAM, are serial womanisers, generally binge drink (in or out of season), enjoy a punt, and have many other character flaws that we the general public decree is unacceptable because they are 'professional sportsmen'.... Get into the athletes village at the Olympics and see what professional athletes get up to.... I'm not saying we should get Fev to the dee's as he probably isn't the right fit for us, but hold on he is no worse than many of the 'professional' athletes you must think are just heavenly creatures1 point

To say that Fev acts like the average young bloke is exactly his problem. To play in a professional sport he must act like a professional sportsman. Physically and mentally he is not up to it.1 point

So what exactly has he done lutz? Any mor than the average 20-30 year old? Other than a serious gambling problem which many many people have he is only guilty of repeated minor adolescent stupidity. I can guarantee I have done many more drunken stupid things (as has most local level footballing males) than what Fev has. Seriously - he wore a strap on to a mad Monday, he [censored] on wall outside a restaurant in chapel street woopdy doo, hardly major offences, quite probably if you add up everything he did it might actually add up to a good Saturday night. Carlton really are the ones at fault for for not pulling his head into gear to be able to prepare himself as an elite footballer. I don't know Fev but I'm sick to death of this Fev is a cancer, holier than thou crap. I wish every in the media adopted this policy - let those without sins cast the first stones......1 point

It should be noted that we acquired a rather large asset with that debt. And the talk was that the Bentleigh, properly run, will pay down it's own liability. But that is not as easy as it sounds...1 point

Sheedy's not finished. He's doing what he's employed to do which is to drum up publicity for the fledgling outfit because it needs to stay at the forefront of the news. The AFL and GWS are, after all, trying to crack a very difficult market. Melbourne would be wise not to take the bait and to simply ignore Sheedy's allegations. The club has no obligation and is probably prevented for ethical reasons from divulging information about the medical records of any player. For the record, I heard the stories about the problem with Scully's knee long before he announced his move to GWS and my source was from someone in the medical fraternity who claimed the basis of his information was impeccable. The source was not related to the Melbourne Football Club. What I can also say is that I attended a dinner in late August and some MFC players, including Scully, were there and when Tom was asked about his knee, he said: "Some weeks it's good and some weeks it's not." Whether it affects his career or not will be determined in the fullness of time but my reading of Sheedy's comments is that the state of the knee remains a concern.1 point

LDC, there have been a lot of posts on other threads potting JF for that Port game. I was at the game - call me a glass-half-full kind of guy, but I was quite taken with what he DID do in his first game, rather than wanting to sack him for his bloopers. The mistakes showed a lack of composure in the face of his first exposure to a packed house at the highest level; on the other hand, I was quite excited by what I could see in his capabilities, including how he put himself into contests, and the way he moved around the forward line. Exciting prospect!1 point

According to everyone down at Casey, they rate Fevola for his leadership capabilities and the advice he gave the younger players, GET OFF HIS BACK. Also Cook is CHF Fev is FF, so we should really blame Bate or Dunn... but why bother Brett Lovett could be a good pawn for MFC to use though yes1 point

One of my favourite players. When I was a kid having a kick I used to mimick B.Lovett. I even sticked my butt and hips out, acknowledging that B.Lovett's was most effective in keeping his feet and shaking off would be tacklers. Unfortunately I didn't have the mullet of curls to go with it. Just like I would mimick another, skip and twirl the pill a la G.Lyon lining up for goal late 80's. Strange indeed. But I loved it.1 point

Thanks for that post. If you want to put it into perspective; how many reps are we talking? B/c if it's 10 - that's really poor. If it's 20 - that's really good. Thanks for info again. Edit: Really good = 1 min 4 sec group. Not the others. 1min 14 secs for a 300m is a canter. You'd want to be doing 30 reps to make that acceptable at this level of sport. 1 min 25 secs is a brisk walk. Not a good look.1 point
