Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

10 Million is "loans'...by the five riders to the avoid the apocalypse !!

You got to hand it to the never say die attitude of the Shinbonners. I for one really did think they had no option but to go North...or for North.. even more North !! lol

You would have to think on this basis that they might just stay. The Sainters look to shore up their position by travellling South, all the way to Frankston town. That has a lot working for them.

So what does this all mean when we have Andrew ( I talk before I think ) Demetriou saying ( nay, threatening ) a 17th licence.

What really is this extra licence about one wonders?

Do the AFL want to expand? I doubt it as 16 works well on many levels. Does teh AFL really want or care if the Kangas go North? I would think only in so much as it will fulfill some backroom deal done some time ago to get another team out of Victoria and into the fastest growing place in all of OZ, yes friends..the Gold Coast.

The AFL might just be snookered here. If they dont go ahead with a team in the GC then I would guess much will come "unstuck".

So what to we summise to be the real agenda here. ? To help North? I really dont think the AFL culd care two hoots really. If anything the Arden St mob ( kangas..mob...lol ..*sigh* ) are proving to be nothing more than a thorn in the side of the great Autocracy's plans. I have a funny feeling we may incur a bit of a backwash wave through all this. Cooments by "I've got a shed" Jeff will be useful to Demetriou and kind as they look to punnish the infidels. As we are in the same boat we I hate to say it might incur the wrath by association.

I hope the powers that be at MFc are waching all this and taking steps.

So North get 5 Knights

id be happy to find 5 Dragons !!

MFc...watch your back.

What is 10 million in "l-o-a-n-s"?

What are the terms of provision and repayment? What interest charges are there?

What happens when the Kangas absorb and use up the 10 million?

How is the Kangas going to be able to achieve a sustainable profit making brand that will grow?

There are no white knights just a smokescreen to delay the inevitable. Just a bandaid to a haemorraging artery.

I would have thought its AFL $100 million if you relocate vs $10 million if you stay. Now what to do North Board?

Its interesting to see the Magpies make a move on the GC games.

James Brayshaw should focus on creating comedy on the Footy Show rather than setting up a tragedy at North.

Sounds like a good plan, good on Brayshaw for pulling this deal together if it happens.

The $10 mill is not really a loan per-se, more an annual revenue generating investment account. It just sits there generating hundreds of thousands of bucks for them to use each year to service their clubs bottom line. Like a retirement cash account.

As long as the markets in which the money is invested don't go haywire it seems like a good strategy.

We should look at trying to set up something similar with our "wealthy" supporters and members.

Is the money a loan or a gift? If it is repayable whether or not it has interest to be paid on it, it means that it is on balance sheet and raises again the solvency of the Kangas. If its a gift then what controls will be over it in a cash strapped club to ensure the capital is not used to prop up cashflow in a bad year

Does any benefit from this replace any special assistance from the AFL?

So given it provides them with $600,000 per year how far does this to making them a sustainable profitable entity in the future?

How good is this deal versus the $100million package from the AFL to actual sustain a future?

Yeah probably not as lucrative as the AFL's big bucks offer, but I admire Brayshaw and his team for having the guts to try and keep his team where its roots are and not up and relocate at the AFL's whims.

Whilst Rhino I share much of your bemusement regards the "salvation" of the Roos it has to be asked how much of the 100 Million is conditional on various aspects anyway. By many acounts teh AFL hasnt actually got a deal with the GC yet...and yet they spruik it. cart before the horse ?? How much of the so called 100 Million over X years will North get anyway if they were to stil be a club?

yes. some is the retirement of debt etc. Some by all accounts is a distributoin of some funds particular to that region etc.

I dont think its quite as simple as 10 versus 100. Which raises the whole question of just how real much of the AFL's deal is. however good AFL clubs might be at colouring and 'secribing" their situations I would contend the AFL itself is far more inventive.

I do too. However there comes a time when they need to have the fortitude to admit that they may have to move.

I recently read a book on the last days of Fitzroy. Lots to admire in the final days but some of the pig headness from the Fitzroy only inflicted greater pain on them. I dont want the Roos to do that.

I dont know all the points.

But I do know the AFL wants a team permanently in the Gold Coast and wants to relocate a Melb based club. They have a financial incentive to have North move and succeed there. Its a win win for both if it does. Why Would the AFL jeopardise that?

They want to succeed in the GC and would use the Kangas to do it. The AFL money must be spread between the relocated Club, promotion of the game and NOrth in Qld and the improvement of infrastructure. It may not be 10 vs 100 but the proportions would appear right.

Do you think the AFL will continue to assist the Kangas to stay in Melbourne for future years when they survive on a non arms length pot of "loans" which are not commercially arranged?

There is no doubt the AFL want another team North and indeed why wouldnt you. The GC is boomsville.

I actually think the Roos are mad not to take it up. Talk about 'on a plate' ...sheesh !!

But I think the AFL is being as whorishly quick as it can in trying to appease...god knows what. why the rush? They seem sto take forever in all other manners of planning and now they want the Roos to have moved there 5 mins ago !!

Yes I think the AFL will have to continue to support the Roos in some manner as long as they remain a viable team (of sorts ) just as they support any team. The Roos are entitled to what ever they get now, surely ?

I think the AFL should have been better at coersion instead of offfering some half baked deal whilst holding a big bat behind their backs.

All of this seems to be created on the run quite the opposite of past efforts. It irks me that the real winners out of all this may end up being the Filth!! But what really irks me is I cant blame them for being clever.

To me if the Roos were even half way realistic..and as aclever as they think they are then surely they could strike a similar if not more atractive deal to that propsed by the Filth. You would think North have first dibs ??

What you have here are a bunch of very impassioned folk who dont want to see their club die yet who are blinded to the cold realities of what IS. This same group who are seemingly myopic to the point that they can not see that dastardly bastard about to streak past them and steal the choccies.

There are in realities two issues.. One...a club to be based ( focused) on the Gold Coast. and Two..the ongoing survivial of the Roos. There are some elements which occur in both objectives...and some that dont.

No there is one.

The Roos survival is best achieved in the GC. They wont survive longer term in Melb.

The AFL are keen to move up there as soon as practicable due to the continued financial performance of the lucrative Southport Sharks and the presence of the NRL Gold Coast team.

They will get to keep their jumper and the "kangaroos" tag.

Aren't they also guaranteed a certain amount of Melbourne games as well?

The main loss seems to be that supporters wont be able to see their team train.

Anyone out there trying to find where the Dees train, BTW?

I think they should try to get five or six away games at the MCG where the Roos supporters seemed happy to watch them play before Telstra arrived.

If I was a Roos supporter and we kept 6/8 games at the G, 10 games on Free-to-Air each season, complemented by reasonable plane tickets, unlimited funds to pursue players and create A-Class facilities, I would look at it favourably.

But Im not.

Maybe the Roos make their hard core supporters very welcome at training and we just dont get it.

No..there are two.. each as its own agenda. There simply are some shared elements.

if there was only one there would be no mutually exclusive aspects..

No. Just different points of view on it.

Theadvent of the GC as the 17th team would hasten the demise of the existence of the Roos. It would be folly to think of them in separate terms.

well we'll agree there are indeed elements shared by the events and circumstances :)

Do the AFL want a GC team ? YES

Doe sit need be the Roos ? NO

Do the Roos need to relocate to continue existance ? Now thats the curly one :)

Back to ealrier thoughts..as youve picked up on.. Its that question of a 17th team..was is a Ruse ( Roose ..sic..lol ) or is there a plan B timetable in the AFL little mind to a start update ? we may never know. 17 teams would just stuff it all up again. Id have to sit down and look at it closely but I have the gut feeling 17 teams is a lot more work than the previous 15 effort. 16 is a nice number for even groups and break downs.. even with one less its still works ok ( kinda ) 17...Not as easy !! I stil think its an AFL gambit to coerce rahter than any real desire to actually have 17 teams.

The more you look at this the Roos are just not boxing clever. They now have two adversaries.. The AFL and now the Filth. Brayshaw is no match for Eddie. From the stands though that makes for an interesting standoff. May they both suffer in this debacle :)

I think North's adversary is one and the same.....the AFL. If the AFL are going to invest in North on the GC they will not let the Pies undermine the process.

The AFL dont want 17 teams. Its a shot across the bow of the Kanga ship. They want North in Qld. North are just putting off the inevitable by promoting "loans" and other non arms length arrangements to create a veneer of financial stability.

They are shot in Melbourne and need to think smartly about extracting the best deal up in Qld.

It would be the smart move without doubt... they seem more blinkered than smart at present..such is life.

If the Kangas refuse to make the move North, will the AFL veto any further deals where they sell games up there, and move the deal to another club?

An interesting and potentially ugly scene there. Even with the 'soft-loan' arrangement North would still be in deep trouble without the income from the sold games.

The AFL would rightly much prefer games which were a possible prelude to relocation than mere 'exhibition matches' from clubs that have no deeper connection with the target market and fans.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
