Last night on Triple M it was announced by BT and Spud that Riley is on the move to Carlton to be Rattens main man. Signed, sealed and delivered.

I have not seen anything official, however they are usually on the money. This definately would not suprise me.

Lyon didnt seem to shocked, and said he felt the move was on the cards.

All the best to Riley and many thanks for his contribution over the years.

Also, they also mentioned the Josh Mahoney rumour that was floating yesterday, and said that it was good as done.

Disappointing, but understandable really. Good luck Mark.

Whats this stuff about Josh Mahoney?

I'm sure Carlton were rather happy with Riley's decision to play to win in Rd 22

hmmmm.. the thick plottens !!!!

I hope Ratten and Riley will be very happy together.. ..like anyone really cares..lol

its a good outcome for Melbourne...thats what matters!!

God I hope Mahoney doesn't come to us, if he coaches like he plays... A soft receiver who snuck away because his opponents paid him no respect..

If this is true have faith in the new Coach's decision.

If Bailey is as switched on as we are hearing after The great coaching appointment Process then I'm sure he will surround himself with the best assistants going around.

For the record Josh Mahoney is a bloke who owns a recent Premiership Medalion & from memory played a very

handy game on the biggest stage going around in 2004.

If true lets embrace him into our new era.

Living here in Adelaide, again has given me a touch more inside information on the whole Josh Mahoney topic....

There have been a few articles during the 2nd half of the season, saying how he is interested in a coaching career.... And the glowing praise heaped on him by Power coach Mark Williams, suggests that Mahoney may be well worth getting!!

For one, Dean Bailey would know how he works and must also be impressed by him....

A few grabs from an article in Adelaide

Williams says Mahoney is as "quality a person as anyone we've had come through the group in the past 11 years". "And if an available (coaching) position came up we would certainly look at him," Williams said. "He's outstanding and I think he's had a huge impact on the playing group, perhaps more than any of the leaders who have been in our system. He's selfless, he puts everyone in front of himself, he comes up with motivating videos, he's a very smart person, he listens but he has is own opinions and is willing to say what he thinks, which is terrific."

Mahoney said his coaching appetite had been whetted by sitting in on coaching discussions and meetings in the second half of the season.

"I want to have a crack at it (coaching) in the next few years and see where it takes me," Mahoney, who has a science degree and masters in marketing, said.

Williams said the impact of Mahoney could not be measured by "games, goals or even premierships". "It's what he's done for the rest of the group," Williams said. "He's had a very difficult career of knocks and doing the hard yards but he's endured, tried really hard and never given up to get to the top of the mountain. And that's a great example and inspiration to us all."

In my opinion it would not be such a bad idea.... And for those who question him due to him not having a stellar career..... Dean Bailey is not really a name I remember from my days watching footy!!

The Josh Mahoney story is one of hard work and persistence that finally saw him make it in a premiership side after many years of rejection and knockbacks. This is one of the qualities that we see in many successful coaches and I'm sure that Dean Bailey has recognised this in Mahoney.

As far as Reilly is concerned however, I think it's best that he goes elsewhere and Bailey is allowed to chose his own coaching team rather than have someone like Reilly who was someone else's appointment imposed upon him. It's a win-win for everyone and Reilly will really be able to taste the fruits of his labour on Draft day when his new club picks up two of the top three elite youngsters in the game. He'll be able to turn to the Demon table and say,

"Tanks a lot!"

And this from Socrates from Demonology:

high praise of Josh Mahoney by Choco Williams.....as quoted on the the Port web site

"Power coach Mark Williams said it was a career he would remember forever"

“The Port Adelaide Football Club is very proud to have had Josh Mahoney represent it,” Williams said.

“You wouldn’t meet someone more giving of his time, more considerate of others or more team-orientated. He is such a wonderful leader and has been a tremendous influence on our young group despite not being in the side himself for a lot of this year.

“We drafted Josh very much as a back-up player. Just about straight away he improved out of sight, then he demanded his spot and played a significant role through the second half of 2004 including in the grand final. That says a lot about not only his ability as a player but his determination and belief.

“I’m sure there’s plenty of footballers in their mid-20s who are battling away, dreaming of an opportunity, who have Josh’s poster on their wall. He is the ultimate example to all of us of what can be achieved if you want it enough and believe in it.”

Don't knock Mahoney as a receiver who didn't work. That bloke worked his arse off.

Ive got a mate who played for Williamstown for a few years and was very good mates with Mahoney so I got told the whole story when we were watching the Port Grand Final.

It was a tough road for him and ive heard it is a testimant to his attitude and toughness that he even got there.

Turn it up, he was by no means a great of the game but if a few of our senior core had showed the same application and determination in the face of adversity that Josh Mahoney exhibited during his playing career we would not be coming off such a crap season let me assure you.

The wrung every drop of talent he had, to be de-listed by at least 2 clubs, be told to give the game away due to head injuries, travel over to Adelaide off your own bat with no guarantees of a spot and end up a premiership player is an incredible story. That is MENTAL TOUGHNESS!

I suggest you think a bit more before slagging players off and if you can't resist the urge, have a look in our own backyard.

This is from today's Australian - Assistant coach stuff plus the obligatory Judd reference:

Former St Kilda player Jason Cripps is being lured back to Victoria by new Melbourne coach Dean Bailey for a similar role with the Demons.

Bailey, who was an assistant with the Power before leaving on the eve of the finals to take on the senior job at Melbourne, has poached recently retired Port forward Josh Mahoney to return to Victoria as an assistant coach.

Cripps, who is understood to be keen to return to Victoria for family reasons, is contracted to the Power for one more season.

Melbourne believes Chris Judd could make his preferred destination known as early as tomorrow.

Chairman Paul Gardner yesterday denied that the Demons had become frontrunners for Judd. "I've heard a few whispers, but it's all news to me," Gardner said yesterday. "We might hear something on Sunday."

Meanwhile, Collingwood assistant coach Adrian Fletcher has been told by the Magpies that his contract will not be renewed. Michael Broadbridge, who has worked as an assistant coach at Collingwood and Fremantle for the past eight years, has joined West Coast as a skills coach.

And former Richmond player Ashley Prescott, who has coached Claremont in the WAFL in recent years, is set to join the Dockers as a development coach.

So who are we getting Cripps or Mahoney? It wouldn't be both, Do we still have Paul Williams, if he is contracted maybe we can make him the interchange stewert as he stuffed our midfield up last year.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
