You’re going a bit early with Cross.

JVR would need to start to perform a bit better if Kentfield gets firing imho

There really is no best 23 this year.

Kentfield, Jeffo, AJ, Henderson, AMW, Melksham, Heath, Taylor, Matthews can all find a way in to our team if they’re fit and firing.

We should take a look at a heap of players in different spots. Kolt at half back is one of them already. Howes as the defensive winger could really work now he’s a bit stronger over the ball, just need a small/medium defender. Culley and Langford on ball once the pace of the game slows a bit.

I can’t see Rivers being out of the 1’s for to long DeeSpencer.

Cross impressed me I think he goes in a bit harder than Latrelle. Sharp has impressed me been good in the 3 games. Gone from fringe player to best 23.

Rivers still has time to cement his spot with Bowey being out for a while as does Latrelle with Viney being out for a while.

Cross as a key forward like he played for some of the time yesterday?? Nup.

Say it now Van Rooyen would want to fire after 2 shizzen weeks, with Jeffo and Luker waiting in the wings

Howes Petty Lever

Bowey Turner Rivers

Lindsay Steele Langdon

Chandler Mihocek Sparrow

Fritsch Van Rooyen Culley

Gawn Pickett Windsor

Viney Langford Sharp Salem Tholstrup

I would love to see us run out with this lineup. Long term I think all of Latrelle, XT and Matthews are in the team but, for now they are all raw. The other 2 I would like in the team are Kentfield and Andy. I think Luker has the heighest ceiling of any key forward on our list and Andy could become our best lockdown small defender once he gets match fit.

Rivers to half back, Lindsay to the wing, Culley deep forward to use his aerial craft. Main 5 centre bounce attendees. Interesting to see how the midfield develops long term with Langford and Tholstrup replacing Steele and Viney long term.

No best 23 at this stage . Would like to see AMW in defence, Kentfield forward/ruck. As an experiment (Casey) C.J forward. Also would like to see Heath given ago , surely no one want to be a stand by ruckman.

Petty is a afl footballer and more than likely a 200 game mfc afl footballer

I feel like you're making a new thread just to drop Petty again

Bizzare

Exactly this. One of King's key philosophy is flexibility - our 'best 23' will change week to week, and be entirely dependent on who we're facing.

Not necessarily I've changed the team and put Rivers in it. Controversually because Culley has done nothing wrong. You don't want to get injured at Melbourne they may not have a spot left in the team as I think Rivers will find out. Fritsch will come in for Laurie that's obvious, but Bowey and Viney will sruggle to get a spot in that team. I think Bowey can get back in once he finds fitness but I doubt Viney is best 23 and that's not including who they want as the second ruck. Do they want van Rooyen? Do they want Kentfield? or do they want Petty? It's very hard to pick a side ATM as we are playing good footy I don't envy them one bit.

Viney will play a lot at Casey, when he returns, Bowser though is an automatic in!

I understand how hard this is but Riv and Petty are 💯 in our best team. T Mac has been a great servant but is done.

Viney might get a few weeks at Casey to find form and match fitness, but providing he recovers from his injury he'll definitely find a way back into the senior squad sooner rather than later:

  1. He's too good for VFL

  2. He's too much of a competitor

  3. He's vice captain and provides great physical and spiritual leadership of the side

McDonald is not done and is a better backman than Petty. Rivers maybe but it's going to be hard for him to come back in. Doubt Petty is best 23 playing second ruck ATM I think we can do better.

Doubt we'll see Petty running around for Casey any time soon.

Let's just say we've got options atm.

Key position defender is our greatest need going forward, followed by another strong midfielder.

Other than Lawry who will he replace??

Everyone's looking good at present with the style we're playing so it's pleasantly challenging, but Viney - if fit and in form - still gets a game in front of:

  • Laurie

  • Sparrow

  • Culley

  • Tholstrup

I've always been a fan of Sparrow and he's been great the last few weeks. But people forget that when Jack is fit and firing, the output that Sparrow has produced is on par with what Viney produces consistently.

He also tags like a madman if needed so I think he has the Kolt covered.

Also, I know Culley was the flavour of the month before the season started and he has some clear AFL traits but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more from him - albeit he is playing a tough role as a high half forward where stats are hard to come by.

The good thing is at present, there is no rush for Viney to return and we can make sure he's 100% ready to go. But if he gets back his best, I think he will remind a few why he is so important to our team very quickly.

Culley played wing for most of the first half against St Kilda then went deep forward to counter Wilkie as a defensive forward.

Freo he played a bit everywhere, starting forward and then ruck and then on ball in the last quarter.

The last two weeks have seen him playing almost exclusively on the wing. He’s had moments of quality with the ball and been useful as a marking target both out of the backline and sprinting hard forward to create a mismatch. But he’s also given up some footy to his opponents and occasionally been beaten for pace/awareness defensively.

We’ll know more about him after another month or two but I think for now they’ll trying to solidify him as a solid wingman then they might try some more utility stuff with him.

It’s a big if but if Sparrow can routinely produce 20 touches (with decent efficiency) and 10 tackles he might offer more than Viney in this new game plan due to his outside running.

Viney and Steele in the same midfield gets us right back to a lack of speed and spread.

If by some miracle Viney was back this week fully fit I’d be rationing him and Steele plenty of half forward time so we don’t disrupt the balance. If Viney could basically play a chunk of Laurie’s half forward minutes plus a few midfield rotations when fresh we’d be maximising his skillset.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role.
