2026 VFL Fixture

First 3 rounds seem to be out. Casey have Footscray away, bye, Box Hill at home. 21 rounds - 18 matches and 3 byes.

Tasmania have Coburg at home in Round 1.

There's byes in Round 1 too.

BYE RND 1 Someone should be SACKED!

Round Zero nice if the AFL meat raffle wheel clicks and it's a win. You'd think a definite advantage Round 2 1, if you're running already battle-hardened and warmed up. Didn't help Harold though. Perhaps a judicious 4-5 day turn-around march would balance it out. In the realm of possibility logically all the early bird starters would swap partners next round to be fair. But of course AFL, logically and fair are mutually exclusive.

Can't be any worse than giving the MFC a bye in opening round and then giving them their second bye after Brisbane, Sydney, Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn and GWS have all had both their byes despite playing in opening round.

Ch 7 have reportedly dropped their VFL coverage.

Hopefully the AFL will permit streaming on the TV from the AFL site.

Why it's not available now I'll never understand. Same with the WatchAFL website. (Dark Ages)

I think its part of the agreement with fox and 7 to protect their investment.

Not that VFL games would be a deal breaker for somone umming and aahimg about getting a Kayo subscription, but if for example you could cast the coverage of vfl games (or the preseason games) you don't need Kayo to watch it on a TV.

It astounds me that someone in the media has not bought this terrible competition up for discussion.

Does Kayo have VFL games? They used to have them but I haven't noticed them in recent years

I thought so, but perhaps I'm imagining it

The VFL is much like the Sheffield Shield in cricket. Absolutely necessary but heavily subsidised ($$$'s)

And no longer any room on FTA TV for either competition. Not enough people want to watch it

ODI's in cricket went the same way once t20 became the preferred choice

There's just too much other big-time sport to watch (or attend) these days

Tennis has record numbers as does the F1's. Then there's the big 4 USA sports and the various soccer competitions

The Sheffield Shield competition is at least a fairly well run affair, comparing it to the VFL is like comparing a cold to Covid.

The VFL doesn't get a decent TV or streaming audience these days, old dee. That's why Ch7 dropped off

The powers that be at the AFL would be way more concerned with the costs of running the comp. After all, with regards to the AFL, it's about the $$$'s

I compared the VFL to the Sheffield Shield, as that comp (the Shield) would cost a small fortune to run (every year) The Shield might be run better but the stands are empty and I wouldn't imagine many would be watching via streaming (I do watch, occasionally)

But CA has India to pay the bills ... it has previously been noted that CA receives $5Million - $8Million for every while ball game played involving Australia & India. That's why we play India every year in the shortened form (in effect, India pays CA to run the Sheffield Shield) Thank you, India

One of the biggest costs for the VFL would be all the airfares, accommodation, Doctors, Physio's and all rest of it because we have 5 Northern State teams & a Tassie team involved in the VFL ... and those 6 teams are entrenched in VFL for the foreseeable future. It is what it is

But I'm not sure why we have 4 teams having a bye in the first round of the VFL when there's an even number of teams involved (22)

Makes no sense but we're talking about the AFL where they can't even manage to call the opening round in the AFL, Round 1 (?)

It's quite funny Macca I laugh every time I see the second round referred to as round 1 it is a classic case of the Emperor has no clothes. On a number of cases every year they treat there audience with contempt, I actually think they believe that their decisions are beyond reproach.

The article indicates that you will still be able to stream the games from the AFL website. Production quality of course will be limited....

Streaming quality is fourth world country like with buffering making it unwatchable!

Why so many byes when there are an even number of teams?!

Drives me insane! Impossible to get games in returning players or youngsters

Especially galling since it's round 1, which is AFL round 2 (opening round notwithstanding), and there are 4 byes????
