Music Recommendation thread for off-season Boredom

Has anyone heard:

Pain to Power by Maruja

I'm unsure how to describe it. Post Punk? Post hardcore? Jazz rock?

It feels like a bit of a cross between the styles of At the Drive in X Rage Against the Machine X Party Dozen.

Good, great or fantastic are often good terms to describe music you enjoy.

I think it's fair to say I like it, and think it will intrigue others but it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

If the genre descriptions or bands I mentioned are of interest, check it out!

I think there's a few tickets left for Nick Cave and the bad seeds 3rd show in Melbourne.

Saw them in Brissie earlier this week.

Just a brilliant production. Sound and visuals. The band were phenomenal and Nick totally engaged with the crowd.

He's 68 now. If you were thinking of going, get a ticket. I've seen them 4 times now and that show may be the pinnacle of their career.

Warren Ellis may be the happiest bloke on the planet when he's up there on stage.

A massive incredible set.

I would have given the proverbial left nut to be able to attend his show at Sydney’s Domain, but, going by what I’ve heard from attendees, the David Byrne concert was the ultimate… every single person I know who went, said it was the best concert that they had EVER witnessed!

That's weird. Two of my comments were combined - first para was supposed to be against in response to your comment that 2 of your posts had disappeared.

Wasn't funny so didn't post.

Second was a reply to Brownie.

But on new music ive been loving cali band upchuck (think combo of the minutemen, early chilli peppers, circle jerks and black flag - would not look out of place in the film repo man).

And also loving Chicag/new york ban Water from your eyes. Not sure of a comparison but they remind me, more sensibility wise than sound, of erudite late 70s new wave bands like Talking Heads.

The Gnomes are a young Frankston band playing early sixties, Beatles style power pop. Great fun.

All three are playing at Golden Plains on Labor day weekend so probably playing gigs in Melbourne.

LOVE Water from Your Eyes.. Life Signs is a great track (and has a sick filmclip).. RMFC are touring atm and they are a great punk band outta Sydney. also been listening to a bit of 80s Arthur Russell past few days.

Talking about boredom... and getting pumped up for an awesome fresh start in 2026... I've gone and written a new song... I hope you have a listen and see if you like it. I'm hoping Maxy & Kozzi do a bit 😅... maybe Andy & Binman might even play it on the Demonland Podcast. https://open.spotify.com/track/62BFWMeC940hmVrAsL8wtS?si=26105aa7f30743b8

Not being a subscriber to either Amazon. Music or Spotify, I could only listen to the opening relatively few bars, but what I did hear was really REALLY good! To paraphrase Bob Hawke, any podcast operator who doesn’t play that, is a bum!

Would love to hear some more of your material.

I don't frequent anywhere near as many metal gigs as I used to but a friend bought me a ticket to Testament at the Northcote Theatre for my birthday last year and they are as good as ever if not better. Definitely keeping the bay area thrash spirit alive.

Electric Wizard are a real mainstay of doom/stoner metal. Always been there and will continue to be there after the end of time.

Speaking of which, has anyone mentioned Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats yet? I'm sure Gorg is familiar but check them out if you like this stuff.

I like this lineup, I don't like festivals that are jam packed and have too many bands playing at the same or similar times. Makes it feel like an airport.

That Testament gig was great, their latest Album last year is fire!
Emperor are playing their first EP and have the original line up so I'm keen for that.
I usually go to Brutal Assault which is the best, lots of spots to get away from it all and chill if you need to, but its 150 bands over 4 days and a warm up night so its intense by the end.

great week coming up...

monday: cameron winter (from geese) at the forum

tuesday: folk [censored] trio 'candelight' show at fed square

wednesday: alex g at the palais (if i can get a ticket thru tixel!)

thursday: geese at the croxton (manifesting!! c'mon tixel, do yer thing; if anyone knows anyone looking to offload a ticket, lemme know)

friday: laneway festival with chappell roan, wolf alice, a bit of wet leg, geese, oklou, wisp

My friends the excellent Japanese band Buddhadatta, are playing a handful of gigs in Victoria in Feb and March…try to catch them if you can…

Feb 19th Balnarring Social Club, Feb 20th Shotkickers, Feb 21st Medusa Bar Geelong, Feb 22nd Golden Vine Bendigo, Mar 5th Painted Lady Ballarat, Mar 6th Belgrave Hotel, Mar 7th Spring Ditch Beechworth.

If Buddhist chants and hard rock is your thing, this trio might just be what you’re looking for 😉. Tell them I (Tim in Sydney) sent you.

I really can't let this thread go without mentioning finding fantastic new music via community radio and in particular my beloved 4zzzfm.
There's some great shows and DJ's via http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/.
I'd recommend streaming:
Branko Cosic / Unecessary Knowledge - http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/unnecessary-knowledge
Really varied and loads of new independent music
Plays in the fantastic Tape-Off - https://youtu.be/SPXT-7b3DCs?si=j-PLpqOfwEVQ21dx

Leif / Carasouel - http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/carousel
This show can go anywhere. An Amazing music nerd. You're likely to hear brand new stuff you've never heard before or brand new stuff from bands 20 or 30's years ago.

Ian Powne / Brighten the Corners - http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/brighten-the-corners
Also a great treasure trove of varied and new music
He's in a great Brisbane band, the stress of leaisure - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpMwdGPBVLs

Robert Anderson / This! - http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/this
A great morning show mix of high octane rock and punk to fire you up.

Nick / The Chart Show - http://ondemand.4zzzfm.org.au/the-chart-show
Nick's a very funny bugger who is clever enough to play the top 20 played new tracks on the Zeds for the past week and then intersperses it with some fantastic music

There's heaps more fantastic shows to listen to at your leisure via on-demand.
This station has given me so much joy for the past 40 years or so.
It's my new music gold mine.
If you want a great read, Heather Andersen - a 4ZZZ stalwart has charted the 50 year history of the Zeds. It's a great read.

Would love to hear any recommendations of any other shows across the nation. We'd be in strife without community radio and at the mercy of algorithms.
Cheers Brownie

One absolute must go to show is the Japanese fella, DJ Krush, who is touring in March…I’ve seen him just once, but if I was fit enough to get out, I wouldn’t miss this for the world. Also from Japan are my friends Buddhadatta, who are touring Australia during February and March. A three piece who morph Buddhist chants with hard rock music…fantastic!

being a melbourne person, i am of course a triple r listener

breaking and entering for new release music

far and wide for uk indie

local and / or general for, well, local releases

maps for interconnected muzak from all over

off the record for the best in roots and country, americana etc.

respect the rock for, well, rock that deserves yr respect

the australian mood for all over the shop from around the country, from new to the past

we are SO LUCKY to have two great independent radio stations in oztraya, in triple r and pbs

yairs, it's listed as 'hot', so i think i've got zero chance

i literally have known the owner of the croxton for 30 years and she still says 'no freebies' for this show

heard cam winter at the forum last nite - heard but couldn't see cos he was a man with his back to the stage playing the piano at a flat floor venue; shoulda been at the palais or the plenary

Still would have been a great time though, I'm still waiting for his cover of 'Dancing In The Dark' (used on an Xbox commercial) to end up on a streaming service.

Firstly, an apology. I no longer have any idea of who's playing where - and I also have to admit I am not a big fan of metal - so I guess I've now offended about 90% of posters interested in this thread.

But I do love music generally and have a great love of lyrics in particular and used to write whenever i had the time. I've now - with the help of AI - been able to produce the music for my lyrics. So i now have a bunch of songs that i'm happy with - but I'm biased, so was after some feedback (good or bad) if you have the time. I've attached three songs you are welcome to listen to.
