Is there anything better than Soundgarden music on a damn good sound system?

Probably...

You could give this album a try

This song below is quite different. Then I was surprised that somehow i liked this second "song" too

(Strobe lighting is annoying. Maybe just listen.)

(The second one)

Off-season Time, we are all bored with nothing to do!!

So this is a thread for all your great song recommendations

But this is for the lesser known music, the obscure and unique.

no Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, NIrvana ETC

No obvious stuff everyone knows and loves

just for the unique Gems you have Discovered that you want to share

I will start with something I discovered on the YouTube Algorithm. that is a Masterpiece I Love to show anyone who will listen.

Very much hope others will join in on this and we can discover some musical masterpieces together...

there is always something NEW to listen to. Music never dies!

Thankd goodness for Metallica and Ac/Dc tours Been busy with them couple of interstate visits as well only 3 months to start of season again !!

Such as?

It's just an individual thing 'layzie' and to be honest you left yourself wide open with that statement.

For example...

An interesting choice for road crews back in the day to test their sound systems in pubs was a selection from Joe's Garage (Frank Zappa)...I'm pretty sure it was more about the lyric content rather than the sonic nuances though.

Oh I wasn't taken aback Rjay I welcome the response, I just wanted to hear more about your tastes 🙂.

Music is very subjective and that's the best thing about it, my playlist can go from Nine Inch Nails to Reinhardt to Glenn Miller to 13th Floor Elevators in a blink.

And Joe's Garage is definitely something on a good sound system, anything Zappa really.

I think you truly classify as having a broad taste there 'layzie'.

Mine depends what day it is and how I feel, is fairly broad but probably not up with current stuff as much.

Current & newer artists definitely but not in any popular genre.

Yeah there's plenty of great new music out there, the landscape has just changed so much.

Full LPs don't mean what they used to. Makes you wonder how a Led Zeppelin would fare today. However it is a good feeling when you discover a good new artist.

Funny enough I saw an quote from Kerry King saying he was surprised because he expected there to be a mass of new bands coming out of the pandemic.

If you are looking for new music and have broad musical tastes then try some of these lesser lights/

Metal - Enforcer -Diamonds

Speed Metal/Thrash - Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags

Atmospheric Black - Imperium Dekadenz - Meadows of Nostalgia

Death Metal - 1914 - Viribus Unitis (was released last week!)

Pagan black metal - Kampfar - Ophidians Manifest

Doom - Konvent - Puritan Masochism

Depressive Doom - Evoken - Hypnagogia

Depressive Black Metal - None - Self Titled

Black Metal - Nornir - Skuld

Post black - Suldusk - Lunar Falls

Punk - Vanilla Muffins - The Drug is Football

Psychobilly - Tiger Army - III: Ghost Tigers Rise

Rockabilly - Horrorpops - Hell Yeah!

Indie Rock - The Decemberists - Hazards of Love

Aus Instumental Rock - The Dirty Three - Ocean Songs

Jamaican Reggae - Toots and the Maytals - Sweet and Dandy

Dark Folk - Darkher

Have fun 😁

I'm still old school with LP's. To me they mark an artists journey, which is something I love.

It was so exciting when a new album came out, from great artists it was a full work and they were painstaking in deciding the track order.

You would play it in order because it was conceived that way, and anyway with vinyl you couldn't just flick a switch to another track. You had to lift the needle and in some cases turn it over.

my favourite album of the year is definitely rosalia's "lux"

she's otherworldly; like a catalan bjork

her previous album was really poppy and super 'bouncy' for want of a better term; it was my aoty of the year for 2022

this new one saw her work with the lso for a year in order to craft a symphonic set honouring female saints

it's...amazing

here's the single:

it gives absolutely no clue as to how the album was going to sound

My pleasures are now more visual than auditory my hearing is not what it was. But live and recorded music was my passion. Different musics at different times although nostalgia leads me back to some old favourites on odd occasions when the urge takes me.

Some selections from the soundtrack.

Pub With No Beer - Slim Dusty

My very first record purchase, an EP, accompanying my cousin to a record shop in Shepparton. Who played the classic hits of the 60’s on the radio whist milking the cows.

Wild Cherries - live circa 1968

Lobby Loyde’s power trio hair down to their arses kickin’ in.

Sweet Child in Time - Deep Purple

Deep Purple in Rock monolithic.

Simple Ben - John J Francis

North Coast of NSW 1970’s idyll at its best, banjo 12 string guitar and piano. Singer songwriter concludes with a rousing chorus.

Up in Queensland - Carson from Blown ‘72

Originally Carson County Band played at my sixth form farewell social. Broderick Smith et al. Boogie in the moonlight state. It was a different country up there then.

Even though streaming makes it easy to get lazy and pick and choose tracks I too like to stick with LPs as much as possible. There are certain bands where there's really no other way of doing it.

And as you say, the thrill and anticipation of a new album coming out is something that is lost now. The 'what the consumer had to do in order to get this' factor did contribute to the overall experience. I wasn't around for the Beatles phenomenon but I can still remember the day I'd saved up to buy a copy of What's the Story Morning Glory by Oasis at Kew Records and Video. The day, the walk to the store, it felt like I had really earned good music if that makes any sense. I didn't have to turn the disc over but I did have to weigh down the CD player lid with a VHS box set to get it working 😜

For me the worst part about digital music is not being able to flick through a CD booklet
Also liberated WTSMG from my sister as she was 2 years older than me, still got it.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
