Expect that Campbell, Melksham , McAdam & McDonald would be their final year. Laurie, Jeffo, AJ & Henderson would definitely need to show something to stay on the list. Jeffo needs to get himself back and fit and show us he’s got it.

I will put good money on all of these bar Jeffo will be gone in 27. I'll leave it at that!

Cambell maybe keep to train White.

Melksham and McDonald are useful pitch hitters in case of form.

Gone: Campbell; McAdam; May.

Probably gone (delisting): Adams; Laurie.

Possibly gone (retirement): TMac; Melksham.

Possibly gone (delisting): Johnson

TMac and Melksham have done enough to get another year, but I can also see them choosing to leave on their own terms.

Johnson I think depends on what's more important to us: AJ or his list spot. I imagine if we have a few openings, he gets another year. If Melky and/or TMac don't hang up their boots, then it gets tougher. It would depend on how he's viewed in relation to Jefferson and Kentfield, and how we rate the person we could bring in.

So assuming, May, Campbell, McAdam, Laurie and Adams are all out that leaves five list spots before trade/draft. Eight if Melky, TMac and AJ go too.

I assume Culley and Kentfield get upgraded, so that's about three to six spots pre trade period and assuming no exits. That seems about right. With our current hand, we are likely to take min two, max three picks at the draft. With a couple of trades, that seems to work.

Chandler and Jefferson strike me as the easiest re-signings. Chandler seems highly rated internally so I imagine he's a priority. Jefferson has shown enough, without showing so much that its likely that other teams will be targeting him.

The big risks for us seem to be Fritsch, Sparrow, and Salem this year, and Rivers and Petty next. All five are players I can see other teams targeting for different reasons. I think they are each worth more to us than they'll fetch on the open market. Hope we tie them up soon.

I’d be surprised if Tom was traded.

Sparrow STAYS DEFINATELY!

He's in the leadership group and an RFA so clearly we rate him. I would be surprised if we didn't re-sign him.

Both he and his partner are from SA and now have a young child so that would be difficult, hopefully not an issue to stay in VIC

Surely Fritta stays, I don't see him or the club open to finish their relationship.

Hopefully not another ANB situation.

and good mates with maxy!

We must return to drafting youngsters, we have enough Dads army types to keep us competitive.

We still owe a monza for viney, May, the cook and the cooker, will take some years to stabilise our books I would think.

May’s deal ran out this year anyway, wont be paying him anything next year. We’re not paying a cent of Petracca’s contract.

After this year I don’t think we will be paying Gus and May. Trac is a lot of money of the books and some of the Clarry money will be offset by Saints paying some of Steele’s contract. So I don’t think we will be in bad shape.

I have been wanting us to add another couple of quality kids through the draft before Tassie comes in but with some depth now emerging it’s a wait and see for me.

The fact that the club made a play for BH last year has we thinking we will go for a mature player if we can get the right one over the line.

Why the hell was Heath given a three year deal? We’re way too generous sometimes. Three years for Sharp last year as well, they both should’ve been two

I said the same about sharp but im happy about it now, and heath was a no brainer rucks take time he already has a ruckmans body and atm our only ruck option if max goes down , imo he shows all the hall marks of being our no1 ruck once max retires , cambell will be gone before max and imo even if campbell is fit , heath is well ahead of him right now anyway, imo we need to draft another ruck next year even if we have to use a early pick

Sparrow and Chandler both in Port Power sights as they enter free agency (Via Gettable)

Both must be priority signings

2nd round AFL picks will be pick 40+ !!!

So II hope we match any offer forcing a trade with better results. Having said that I wouldn't want to see them go.

There is so much distortion of the first round of the draft it makes a mockery of 2nd round and later picks.

I'd want to see Sparrow keep up this form for longer before listing him as indispensible, but Chandler is exactly that. He's in the ANB category of a player worth a lot to Melbourne but probably not a lot to "the market". Uses his speed so well to hurry and harry defenders (I'm always a bit hesitant to use Champion Data stats, because I think a lot of them are utter garbage, but it is interesting that Chandler is in the top 15 in the league for pressure acts and only Steele has more than him at Melbourne). And his kicking is really good, too.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
