Now that I'm moving back to Melbourne (area), I need to choose a local membership. I've been buying a three game membership for the last however many years along with a digital membership for overseas. That won't cut the mustard any more.

I have no idea which seats are good or better or best. Way back when I was last going, reserved seats had only just become a Thing. I used to sit right at the fence if I could, rain, hail or shine, but that was when the ground didn't have such a big curve in it.

So what is worthwhile? Money isn't a particular problem, though I baulk at the $170 a month option I do admit.

I presume getting Kayo is necessary too. As is a membership that gives me access to a GF ticket should we get there again.

Thanks for any advice.

It depends where you like to sit. You can get reserved seats on the fence, but likely not on the wing, or you can sit higher and get something like a Trident membership (which I have) where you get access to a members room. I was a reserved seat member but I much prefer my Trident membership, as it’s level 2 - so opposition supporters don’t try their luck like they do on level 1.

The MCG staff aren’t great at policing areas, which is annoying against sides like Collingwood or Richmond whose supporters don’t care and will wait to be moved on.

Also, talk to the club. Tell them what you want. The website option is ok, but the folks on the phone are great and really helpful.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like talking to the club is the best bet. I've no idea where I like to sit now, it's getting close to 20 years since I last saw a game live. Can't ask family either as they are all country members or MCC/MFC members.

I've been a Redlegs member since 1988, there are a few areas, my area is N1-4, which is the second level up behind the Demon Army, although I don't often sit there since I've taken up active roles in the cheersquad. You do get priority access to finals and guaranteed access to GF as it's a premium membership.

I also have this membership and feel it's good value. Around $800 per year and I pay by direct debit. Access to all MCG and Docklands games, a seat on level one and access to the Hassett and Ryder rooms for home games. Includes a GFG (I doubt I'll need that in the next 10 years). Seating is N1 - N4 but it's usually possible to sit closer to the wing.

Having said all that I generally stand in bay 13 (M9) with the riff-raff.

look up melbourne membership for say redlegs and tridents, if this suits your budget.

take note of seat numbers available then find the mcg seating web site. on here you can enter a seat number and then look at the view as if sitting there and compare to other options. remember to check if seat is undercover or not, if important to you.

then talk to membership. sooner the better so you have max seat options left.

note all reserved seats tickets currently come with grand final guarantee (approx adds $200 pa to ticket cost)

I’d get a reserved seat at a certain level of membership, so you at least know you have a seat. Then I’d move around a bit and see where you like to sit once the season is up and going. At 70% of our home games you could find a seat just about anywhere. Then the following season talk to the club about where you want to be. They’ll be much more agreeable to getting you a seat you want if you take up a Redlegs or Trident membership - especially if it’s just you. It gets harder if there’s 3 or 4 in a group, but singles are easier to find spots for.

Personally I prefer to sit higher (I’m on level 2 but would take level 4 over level 1) as I like to see the game unfold a bit, and see what’s happening behind and in front of the ball. I know some people love sitting on the fence, but I find it harder to get a feel for the entirety of the game when I’m too close. Good luck!

I’ve been reserve seat member for the last few years but next year my family and I are moving to ga home and away memberships. Our reserve seats were on the wing Olympic stand level 1 and were very good with amazing people around us. We’ve got 2 reason why were changing. The first one is the cost has gone up which I understand but for a family like us who travel to games it’s money we can save and put aside to come up to as many games as we can. The second teaisn. Wing the main reason is the mcg staff don’t police the area enough. People walk down who have GA seats and sit where we pay much more money than them and uts really frustrating. Especially the big games with the bigger teams their fans don’t care. One time we had a whole school of kids over 50 just walk up and sit along the fence in our reserve seats and the mcg staff didnt care until multiple people complained about them sitting in our seats. If it was policed better or done better we would consider keeping our reserved seats

This is what happened to me and my reserved seats too. I got fed up with having to move people along.

Exactly. Very frustrating when all you want to do is watch the footy and people come streaming down as soon as they see empty seats in RESERVED bays/ seats. Mind you a lot of the time they come down and don’t even watch the footy they’re too busy talking and drinking. I’ve emailed MCG about it but don’t expect anything to happen

Stuff that. AFL Membership. Wait 20 years for Gold. Get access 40+ games a year, essentially guarenteed access to Prelim and GF if your team makes it, BUT be surrounded by opposition supporters AND use the worst facilities in the MCG.

I don't think I can wait that long. I'll be decrepit by then, assuming I'm still alive. LOL

AFL Bronze membership with MFC club support. (No waitlist for this level I believe)

Gets you into every MCG and Docklands game irrespective of who is playing.

Allows you to buy good tickets for the first two finals and often the prelim. Preference if MFC are playing.

I love standing areas at the footy. I only usually get a reserved seat if my young son and/or the rest of the family are coming. If I am flying solo (usually night games) its standing with a beer in hand!

Riff Raff pride! 🍺😁

The new stand/redevelopment should fix that.

I'm sure by the time its done the beers will sell for $75 a schooner

Someone has to pay for the stand!

Can any reserve seat members tell me if you're allowed to bring a guest in? I've been thinking about upgrading my membership and finding a nice place to sit however I usually always go to games with friends or my partner.

Im a redleg member.

Im the loud one behind the camera. Its a great place to watch the game apart from my strident support which often moves those in front of me.

I was a guest when I ceased my membership when I first moved up here in 2000. Changed to country member but I always went with mates in redlegs. Renewed membership in 2020 when I went more regularly.

I still regard my membership as donation as despite my best efforts I just cannot get to every game.

The membership team is great and I can usually arrange a guest ticket at the last moment if my friend decides to come.

Its always a great day as you get to the Hassett room to join with other dedicated supporters.
