Marc McGowan (The Age) has us taking Cameron Nairn and Doveston

AFL national draft predictions 2025: How the top 30 could fall and who your club will pick

Haven't looked deeply into Nairn but probably wouldn't be around our two first round picks? We can't go past a Cumming/Sharp/Farrow if they get to our picks in my opinion

Nairn would actually be a great pick, just not at that range.

Lmao in what world are we taking him with 7 or 8

The same world where JT plucked Jackson, Pickett, Windsor, Tholstrop higher than any phantom was anticipating this far before the draft. I cant wait until at least one of his picks is super left field and earlier than the expert groupthink.

I find these drafts far more informative that the usual ones that just have the same players but move them around 3 spots to seem original. In a shallower draft like this teams are going to have very different ratings of players based on what it’s important to them and what individual recruiters see in the different players.

Most drafts that are out in the public are repeats of each other and overweight production far above the future ability to the players to play AFL style footy. It happens every single year. Players with proper AFL athletic traits but lower production are always undervalued by amateur watchers.

Yes but none were rated as low as Nairn this late

Nairn would be the biggest reach we’ve ever had

I usually back JT to a fault but this would be a massive swing and potential miss based on who else would be available

Weird draft though - I think that is pretty clear now. Regardless, it never pans out that the best players are taken in perfect order, regardless of the crop available. Media consensus means little.

Could also be that McGowan has heard we're keen, but maybe we're only keen in the 30s.

Within reason, I hope we use one of our first 2 picks on a high quality small forward who's kicked his 30+ goals a year in under 18's footy.

Looking at our small forward depth chart it's only really Kozzie (part time midfielder) Chandler, Henderson and Mentha. The latter two didn't make giant strides at Casey to suggest they'll be valuable senior regulars next year.

I'd be keen on recruiting for needs for our second pick (i.e. small forward) and best available for our first pick.

I reckon if you're going to reach, reach for the 188cm bloke whose hands look beautiful, who opens himself up in all marking contests without any fear and who kicks beautifully.

If only he was Victorian.

Twomey has Nairn at 24 in his October guide. Pickett was not even mentioned in his year.

Narin would certainly be an interesting pick. I wonder would it mean sliding one of our picks back a bit?! Split 8 and improve 37 maybe and get Pickett and Narin?

Problem is GWS have pick 12 and they often seem to identify the same players as us.

I have complete faith in JT and think an even crop like this is where he will shine.

I'm backing in Cumming and Dovaston.

Cameron Nairn fits what King mentioned was required (some quality forward) - I'll swap him in instead of Dovaston - hoping we can still get Cumming....

Very interesting, would be interested to know the other players available that we passed on at 7 & 8 and if there was writeups on the 2 picks?

On Nairn:

"The Demons are never afraid to go against the grain. This is higher than Nairn has been projected, but Melbourne have him in their sights. Nairn had a seven-goal game at the championships before demonstrating his ball-winning wares with consecutive 30-plus-disposal outings to end the season. He is a high IQ footballer, can run all day as a wingman, could develop into an inside midfielder, marks well overhead and is a neat kick.

If not: They would love Sam Cumming to still be on the board, and might select small forward Lachy Dovaston, defender Jacob Farrow or try to fortify their key defensive posts for the future with Blake Thredgold."

On Dovaston:

"Dovaston, who hails from the same Talent League club as Nick Watson, is the best small forward in this draft. He might lack Watson’s tricks, but still has his share, and has greater running capacity and is considered superior defensively to when the star Hawk was the same age. Dovaston kicks goals for fun (and lots of them), is consistent, has become more selfless, runs hard up and down the ground, and tested brilliantly at the combine.

If not: Farrow would give the Demons another kicking weapon across half-back, and could become a midfielder in time. Thredgold would also make sense with Steven May nearing the end of his career, while they could pair Latrelle Pickett with his cousin Kysaiah."

Of note, he has us passing on Grlj and Farrow.

He also has Pickett going at 16 (4 selections after Dovaston), which is the earliest I've seen him mocked.

Given I have't heard or read anything suggesting we're interested in Dovaston (every link seems like journalist speculation), it wouldn't shock me if we selected Pickett early.

It suits the style of game that King sounds like he's implementing. A good sized medium forward who is an excellent runner but really is a utility wing/flank. It gives a lot of options as a connector in a fast paced game style.

There are a lot of ways that a good sized flanker with good hands and great running ability can succeed at AFL level. I'd love to have seen his SANFL U18 games where he played high possession games up the ground, particularly more around the ball. I think that would probably be the vision that would determine if you'd use a high pick on him.

Maybe Nairn plays like Oli Dempsey?

Seventh heaven: The 'dream' day SA draft hopeful shot up...

A seven-goal outing at the national championships put Cameron Nairn high on clubs' watch lists

"He kicked 22 goals from 13 games with the Bulldogs – including a run of 16 goals in five weeks at one point – while he also had his day out for South Australia, but he actually prefers being deployed in a more defensive position on the wing.

It's there where he finished the season for Central District, completing his season with performances of 30 disposals and 12 marks against West Adelaide and then 31 disposals and a goal against Glenelg.

"To be honest, I actually prefer playing on the wing," Nairn said.

"I ended the season playing on the wing, even as a defensive winger sometimes. I played a lot of half-forward and also in the champs I played as a third tall. I played a few different positions, but I like getting up the ground. I just like being closer to the ball and showing my running ability a little bit more as well. I get to use that on the wing."

Prototype modern wingman.

Also hoping we do GCS F1 and maybe our pick in 30s for something in the teens for Pickett

Have seen a few posters post something like this... is next year's draft meant to be awful? If not the GCS F1 is worth more than a pick in the teens in this year's draft on its own.

I'd love to get Pickett too but if we're not using 7/8 from this year's draft on him then surely GSC F1 is also too much?

May not be of the liking to some/most but Marc got a great scoop on the Cameron Nairn potential pick and unless there’s a significant slider, he’ll be a Dee on night 1. There was a home visit to him recently.

The versatility of playing forward, on a wing and inside is a big reason why he’s shot up. (In Melbournes eyes anyway)

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
