7, 8, 15 for Trac, 24, 28, 43 seems fair.

If we end up agreeing to something that appears 'unders', it is clear the club see him staying around as untenable. It suggests club and teammates do not really want him around which says everything really.

You could say that the club were tired of Trac asking for a trade 2 years running, but you can't conclude that his teammates don't want him around. As a footballer, he's been a total pro.

Sadly, mo64, it’s much more likely than not that he’s lost the support of his teammates. Yes, he’s nothing if not ultra professional and no matter what guernsey he wears next year you’re guaranteed he’ll give his all, because that’s the kind of person he is. But even just one player being on the outer in the locker rooms (so to speak) isn’t conducive to a successful team.

We let Barassi go in '65, now we are (possibly) letting Petracca go in 2025. I smell a rat.

Its the only way to break the curse! First you must sack the first coach to take you to a premiership since the great man, then you trade our only NS medalist like when Barassi left.

The the clincher is in five months when we rehire Goodwin!

Yeah a member of the Dees leadership was reported - via an article by Mark Robinson - as saying in 2024 that it would be better if Tracc left.

What can we do? He wants out, 7 & 8 is as good an offer as we can get really.. we aren't desirable enough to have good players want to come to us, it is what it is.

'It is what it is' - is that you Neeldie?

And even if he hadn't, he almost certainly has now.

It's all very well arguing over whether or not King wants him at the Dees, the one person who's made it plain that he doesn't want to be here is Trac himself.

We move on.

Petracca as with Oliver are stranded assets which are worthless to the club and bleed money for many years. Like owning once prime land that is poisoned and unusable but costs more than it’s worth to clean up. No amount of chest thumping by fans will realise their former true value. These double mill stones are sucking the life out of the club and any half reasonable offer is worth it to move them on. Unfortunately we are at the stage where losses must be cut in order to move on.

If Petracca was a golfer or tennis player I would consider him a consummate pro but in a team sport and not buying into the team ethos diminishes his standing.

7&8 and holding 24 will be a good outcome.

For all those thinking we are getting a poor deal as it’s a poor draft don’t forget we have JT at the helm and he will be more aware of the quality of talent available at those picks than anyone.

Also given our history of aggressive pick trading there nothing to say they will definitely be the picks we take to the draft.

We now get excited about the up coming draft.

I suppose the return we’re getting from GC is going to be less than we hope if they’re going to pay Trac’s entire salary.

Being freed from his salary is a win for us. A boring behind the scenes win, but a win nonetheless.

To be fair barass did win more than Tracc.

Tracc seems more of a Role player then a true revolutionary like barassi

I think Hird mentioned this saga is a strong message for a team out at Tullamarine. Hird is correct, this is a train wreck, losing 2 decorated, experienced players who in theory should be playing close to their best football, for massive unders. As I have posted before moving on one or the other for a fair price makes sense, moving on both in what the other AFL clubs know is a fire sale is crazy stuff.

As Hird & Co point out there was a first round pick on offer last year for Oliver but we said no. After a year in which he showed signs of getting back to his old form and importantly had no off field issues, he suddenly is not required, as the game has passed him by, we have said as much and let it be known we will pay half his wage to boot! Fingers crossed we get a fair return for Tracc.

Really? A first round draft pick? Geelong was offering a second rounder and the opportunity to dump some salary. So who, according to Hird was offering a first rounder?

(Hint: I think James is gilding the lily for the sake of making an argument.)

Interesting that superstar Trac has not really attracted much interest. He chose GC but we didn't see Hawks, Blues or others with cash show any interest. Only the Crows and he had the arrogance to ask for a longer, higher contract off them. 36yo Trac will be held together with duct tape.

30yo Trac over 5 years who is already slowing down, has problems with injuries and has culture issues. He'll play some great footy no doubt but there is a reason not many clubs have knocked the door down

His stats this year were down on almost every stat, disposals, goals, assists, clearances.

Some on here at acting as if we are losing the 2021 version

Are the people saying picks 7 and 8 are not great in a compromised draft, the same people that don't want to let go of pick 24 (probably pushed out to 35)?

If we get 7 and 8, how do we fill all out remaining list spots? We have heaps going out, not much coming in.

Our F/S and NGA will be late picks or rookies.

Happy to have a few player train with us and pick them up in the SSP either. Last year we didn’t have enough list spots. Think it’s better to have a few spaces.

Just to add to the above- we know have a lot of new assistant coaches coming in with intel on other players. SSP could be a good option for us.

It’s not about pick 24

it’s the principle of not giving GC another leg up to get points for a free hit at talented kids

They can go jump

Also pick 24 being the first of round 2 holds value. We can flip that pick on draft night.

I think them asking for 24 was just a ploy to let us have a little win.

It's not so much the pick itself in isolation. It's that we would effectively be giving up McVee and Trac for picks 7 and 8 in a compromised draft. It's ultimately too much and we are treading towards being swindled here.

By not giving it ? Sad

I know this will be an unpopular view, but at this point, with seemingly no one on GCS list that is tradable, 7+8 might just be enough.

We shouldnt be sending anything back to them, 7+8, nothing else.

He doesnt want to play for us, if we hold him to the contract, we will be going through all this again in 12 months.

Is that we we really want to do?????

yes make tracc suffer a little to leave the club that made him ,he may end up at north next year, now that would make my day

I think James was trying to squeeze in 'Melbourne is a disaster' as many times as he could in one segment.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
