Anyone ever think how different things might be IF Oliver kicks a goal rather than that OOF in the dying minutes against Stkilda and we won?

Would Goody still be there? would Clayton? Would Judd? Sometimes these tiny margins lead to big changes.

FWIW I think Oliver will have an outstanding season at GWS in 26 . After that… we’ll see.

I think Goodwin was gone regardless, just may have seen the year out, our problems were bigger than a lapse of concentration in one quarter of footy.

Here’s a what if, what if Oliver’s contract was torn up for behaviour unbecoming of a professional sportsman?

I don't know how much it was ham-fisted by us or an over-reaction by Oliver. I doubt anyone here does.

And probably never will.

Might be a little of both.

My thinking is Dees weren't quite expecting THAT reaction.

My take is that it was a gamble they were willing to take. Jack Viney is still here

Clayton is the best player we've had since Flower. It would take an insane offer to prize him out of MFC. Its a cop out to push him out, and also a cop out to ask him to change his game. How about we work with Oliver, and find out what has changed since he was at his best. My guess, on a quick view of the recent clip in the van, where he gave Dees a whack, and stuttered in doing so, is that Clayton is dealing with a mould exposure issue. Instead of just telling the best since Flower to change his game, actually dig a little deeper and finding out why he lost his form in the first place. We gave Goodwin far more time to improve - than we are giving Oliver.

Mould exposure!!!

If you take the emotion out of it we're making the right call. We wont be Simmos eagles and could bounce like Mitchell's Hawks. Guys like Pickett, Riv, Langford, Linsey, Windsor and Disco are the future leaders of this club and weve just fast forwarded their role development

Or we could be a team that is in the middle for countless years.

This is what I don’t understand. Where are the get out clauses or behaviour clauses that allows a contract to be broken. If any of us in our working life had acted like Clarry we would be out on our [censored]. It bemuses me that being a good player provides an immunity forever. People froth the grubbiest people because they are good footballers.

Oh boy

The Demons midfielder's remaining lucrative five-year contract adds a critical layer to the trade talks, with the Giants' future third-round pick expected to be put forward in the discussions over a deal.

Other later picks, as well as potential pick slides, are also tipped to be raised in coming days as the trade gets worked through between the clubs.

Future 3rd round pick. [censored]. Well they'd better stump up for his entire salary. Even so... that is rather [censored].

We must want him gone real bad for a 3rd rounder. Yuk.

Clarry for a “future 2026 3rd rounder”. That’s a blood and gore horror movie !!!

Jack Viney is a Rugby player, not a bootlace on Clayton Oliver!

Oh excuse me..... EVERY club has skeletons in the closet. its just that they deal with them better than we did!

Viney has a great attitude, is a leader, provides value off field and is someone everyone should lookup to.

Im a huge clarry fan, and your statement is correct over his entire career. But arguably JV has been better over the last couple of years

What's that price say about how toxic clarry has become.

@picket fence is being extremely disrespectful of the whole Viney family. The whole Viney family have given a lot to this club and should never be spoken about otherwise.

Yeah all true, BUT not a patch on Oliver as a player!

Value is not what you watch from the boundary line at the MCG.

NOT casting any disrespect on Viney as a person, but as a player he has his limitations AND as iterated as a player..nowhere near Oliver

Yeah get that but talking about his footballing ability only!

I suggest you stick to critiquing Jeffo. It was a much better read, and outlines your view on ability.

I get you are upset, but leave your emotions to losing Clarry. Not on other players at the club. Jack is a premiership hero.

NEVER said otherwise but, don't poke the bear, and as iterated J.V is as Jack Dyer would say.." A good ordinary player"

What we watch from the boundary line is all we can really comment on with any added value though. This is a footy forum and I’m not sure anyone can disagree with Pickett’s comment here. Viney has been a great servant and very good player (I do disagree with the good ordinary assessment) but he doesn’t compare with Oliver, even the 2025 version, honestly. Beyond that, we’re either speculating or passing on second hand info when it comes to leadership and off field stuff.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
