I'll add O'hAilpin... Thank you Setanta.

Did anyone else notice him carrying on like a moron after he kicked each of his goals which then sparked MELBOURNE up instead of Carlton - setting them on a string of goals.

I enjoyed it immensely.

Git.

We got a snap shot of our future today and look good. A couple of old timers in Biz, Brown and White played well, but Bate, Jones, Sylvia, Newton, Brock needs to find form but we know what he can do, Dunn, Frawley, PJ. Don't be to hard on CJ and Buckley both will get better with a few more games, they look skillful and poised they just need some game time to adjust to the pace of AFL.

I thought Brad Miller was actually pretty good.

Give him a break, if he's going to become a permanent defender, he deserves time to settle into it.

He showed good composure IMO, whereas I thought Bizzell's defensive work was very poor.

He is good at creating attacking play, but he has no idea how to shut down an opponent.

Ward infuriates me, but he has been surprisingly accountable recently.

Bate, Sylvia, Jones, Newton and Dunn were just fantastic today, and a big congratulations to Riley for instructing us to play on in the last instead of shutting down the match and inevitably losing.

Heres my take on it:

Brown - not bad game

Carroll - amzaing courageous mark

Bizzell - better 2nd half

Ward - some bad decisions

Miller - just plodded along

Petterd - bad luck son

Wheatley - B.O.G by miles

Dunn - will get better

McDonald - prolific as always

Bate - hardest working forward

Newton - made FF his

Jones - hard little nut

Sylvia - good game altogether

C. Johnson - needs more time

P. Johnson - great 2nd ruck

White - dominant. 44 hitouts

McLean - struggled shaking tag

Robertson - cameo 5 goals

Davey - was not sighted

Frawley - tried very hard

Godfrey - beat Carrazo's influence (after qtr time)

Buckley - tidy first game

Pretty satisfying game overall. Definately many more positives than negatives.

Davey really struggled, had one of the worst games i've seen him play-- but probably kicked one of the goals of the year. Robbo also seemed to struggle a bit but still managed to boot 5!

CJ and Buckley looked a bit lost at times, but it was to be expected that the step up to AFL level would take some adjusting. Not a bad first game for Bucks to ease into AFL footy though.

Ditto Dunn, needs more time at the top level, but kicked a ripper from 55m out off two steps.

Frawley tried really hard but got beaten IMO, though will be better off for the experience and ground time.

PJ was fantastic in the ruck and around the ground. Our ruck division dominated (as expected) against inferior competition. JW was back to his best.

Jonesy is just a little machine.

Really bad news about Petterd, but means he'll be red-ripe to go and have a huge pre-season and prepare for 08.

Wheatley had the best game i've ever seen him play and has gone from being one many believed was on the way out next year, to an extremely valuable and versatile component of our team.

Bate just works so hard around CHF, and has the talent and long kicking to back up his hard work.

Newton looked great outta the forwardline without Neitz in there. Really is looking like the way to the future for us post-Neitz.

Biz looked good at times, but also made some terrible decisions at times. Ditto Ward.

Need more from Miller. He didnt quite look like he was working that hard, but used his body well at times. Must admit he definately looks more at home at AFL level in the backline.

Good signs from the kids for the rest of the season... Who to bring into the side next week for Ricky P?

I am really proud of Paul Wheatley today.....he always gives his all and has been really hampered by injury. So glad he was able to put in a great game today. I really think he has a lot to offer us in the back half - his long kicks are usually accurate and there is nothing better than watching him kick one of his long bombs through for 6 points! Well done Wheats!

CJ i felt ran to space well but wasn't used a lot, i think he did enough to stay in the side, i don't remember his opponent doing a great deal.

Yeah and I was happy to see Riley using him all over, instead of rotating him between half back and the bench.

With Ricky now out for the season, there is no reason why we shouldn't play CJ and give him a serious chance to prove himself.

Does anyone know if Ward is contracted next season? I just don't feel that he is up to a standard that we want if we are going to take that next step foward. Schwartz must be a mate of his, because he highlighted him at the start of today's game, and spoke about how good he has been this year.

i agree with you normally jaded, but miller has no composure whatsoever. he looks like a rabbit in headlights. makes wrong decisions all the time. that said now that rivers is out play him as a KPP back for the rest of the season. leave the forward line to newton, dunn, robbo, bate, sylvia, davey (that will be a kick ass forward line in a few years!)

I'm sick of sounding like a broken record, but I have good reason to be.

1) Miller was slightly above average as a defender.

2) Bizzell was very good, both defensively and offensively. He took 15 marks FFS.

Ward and Schwartz are huge mates. Personally, I don't think Wardy has been our worse player the past few weeks - at least he has a go - his goal today was awesome. He has a lot of speed and just needs to hit targets more often.....still at 30 years of age, if he can't do that now, he isn't likely to ever do it is he?

I am still yet to see CJ impress with the exception of one game last year again the Eagles at Subi but today i realised that he is alot slower than i thought. i was under the impression he was a fast rebounding defender-winger, however on a number of occasions he was burnt off by Carlton players.

However i rest my case give the kids the leaderships roles now..

Chook captain, the superstar Bater for VC.

How good will Col Sylvia become if he could stay injury free and built up peak fitness....... our Riccuito is coming of age.

I'm going to watch the replay later on, but from what I saw out on the ground, Miller didn't make any stupid stuff-ups, he didn't panic when he had the ball, he even made some meaningful kicking decisions.

He also did a good job on a pretty good opponent in Fisher.

Bizzell had a few shockers, and went through a number of opponents.

As a third man up, he's good, but he is very poor one on one. The reality is, he is only getting a game because so many others are injured.

I want Warnock to get a game next week, and it doesn't matter if Ward, Brown or Bizzell get the chop for him.

Having said that, Brown did little wrong today.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
