The Coaching merry Go Round

One of the more curious, entertaining and fascinating spectacles is the occasional circus called the Coaching Merry Go Round.

In past years not a lot has happened but this year , especially with the fresh announcement that N D will leave the Dees at the end of this year, the scene is primed for an un abashed frenzy of speculation regarding 2008 appointments.

Its probably been a while since we have the occasion of so many coaching position up for grabs and more than sufficent people to fill them , both old, known and totally fresh to the list.

I fully expect Neales announcement today to start a domino effect.. much of it behind closed doors.

well

lets the games commence

I dont really care about the circus about to take place over the next few weeks or months. Personally I think the powers that be at MFC have already picked their man, and the rest is just a procession. What will interest me is who will ND play in the forthcoming weeks and who will be busting their guts on the field.

It will be very interesting to see if what happened today acts as a catalyst.

Connolly is almost certainly gone and there are pretty big doubts over Sheedy (as there are almost every year), Pagan (if he doesn't get to 8 wins) and Laidley (probably if they don't make finals).

I'm not suggesting this (very much against it), but it's curious that while the Sheedy-Daniher swap was debated earlier in the year a Connolly-Daniher one wasn't. I know Connolly has been talked about as a possible MFC coach but Daniher did spend time there as an assistant...

Besides MFC, Freo would have to be as close in the underperforming stakes and who's been coach...Connolly.

He does not build culture and does not get the best out of his list.

I dont see the fixation with getting a failed coach just because he is ex-MFC. Whether he has played for MFC or not is neither here nor there and I dont see what tangible benefit it would bring to MFC that a coach from a non MFC background would not.

Who is it Molan?

I'm actually excited to see the direction that we take from here. While I'm sad to see Daniher go, I think this could eventually turn out to be a real positive for our club. A new coach with new ideas and new philosophies for our younger guys to build on is something that I think we can all get excited about.

Plus, now the Daniher has resigned, he might play the kids as there is no need for him to save his job anymore.

I'm not sure whether you are having a go at me or not, as I'm the only one who has mentioned Connolly in this thread although in the context of ND possibly being considered for the Freo job (unlikely but I don't know how he's rated by the Fremantle board).

I agree it is foolish to get a coach just because he was a player at the club and I have never proposed that and would never. Chris Connolly along with Grant Thomas, have failed to achieve acceptable results from two playing lists which I rate amongst the top 3 or 4 in the competition.

Like Pettard, Garland, Frawley, Dunn, Bate, Jones etc......

Newton, Buckley.... :)

Sorry. Couldn't help myself. Point taken.

Back on topic, there is one ENORMOUS positive to come out of this. Knowing, as we do now, that Daniher is gone, we have first crack at any coach that's up for grabs. If any other club does a St. Kilda and ditches their guy after a final.... by then we already have had a few months to get our foot in the door first.

The biggest evidence of this would be the Voss/Melbourne talk that's SURE to dominate the papers over the next few months.

Not at all Kit. Caro Wilson mentioned it in the paper yesterday and it has been said on this site prior to you joining

I don't want to give much away, but his initials are Guy McKenna. No, thats just my feel. I think he ticks all the boxes.

When one door closes, another one opens.

This is our chance to make a real change at the MFC, wipe the slate clean and start again.

I'm sad to see Daniher go, because he has always been a good servant of this club, but I'm so excited by the prospect of starting fresh.

This is our chance to do something big. I just hope the club really makes the most of this opportunity.

Great player.

Why has he been overlooked for every major coaching job he has gone for? And he has gone for a few! <_<

There's only been a couple in the last few years, and there are quite a lot of assistant coaches out there. Todd Viney is my smokey.

A few names mentioned on 3AW

expected - Voss, Ratten, Connelly, Todd Viney

unexpected - Buckley, Gavin Brown, (SOS) Silvani, Chris Bond, Alan Richardson

Not much mention of John Longmire and they had doubts about Harvey

Heres a rumor I'll start for fun, Grant Thomas to Coach and bring his Mate Nick Riewoldt.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
