Respect

For sometime now Iโ€™ve been somewhat bewildered how one poster on here seems to be given a free pass for questionable behaviour when everyone else is not granted that same latitude.

When someone questions said behaviour a few select allies regularly come to his/her defence. However generally itโ€™s all quiet, waved through to the keeper, as if people are too scared to say anything.

The irony is the poster is consistently criticising others for their behaviour or sometimes itโ€™s just their stated opinions yet he/her seem oblivious to stop and reflect on their own actions.

Whilst it is a complex situation with many issues to consider ie. feelings, personalities, general life difficulties, mental health and the malaise of social media etc We all could be suffering in some way. Who would know on a forum like this?

To grant one person immunity alone is improper, in my opinion.

How are you going Ghostwriter, are you OK.

Iโ€™m not OK.

I'm as passionate as the next Melbourne fan, but seriously, if our coach getting sacked is having a material effect on your mental health then I would implore you to please talk to someone to uncover the underlying issue/s you're dealing with.

I ended up putting my thoughts down on Goody's tenure here: https://credittodubois.com/blog/history-doesnt-repeat-itself-but-often-it-rhymes

I fall more on the glass half full side of things (with the exception of 2025). Thought it was worth having some things out there of that bent given most of what I've read published is pretty negative on him.

Great read - well done

It's two days now, and I still feel absolute anger at all the people, many of them on this site, who have been relentlessly critical of him.

The talk about money is sickening. If they think that money is what motivates the coach or the players, they have no effing idea. I am really worried that some great players are going to leave the club. I fear that it is going to be a classic case of, be careful what you wish for, with many of the people on this site. And then, will they say, I was wrong? No, they will just be more and more critical, criticising from the sidelines.

Yes, I am still extremely angry.

People are entitled to their opinions, positive or negative. That includes being critical of players, coaches, and the club. If you're satisfied with our win-loss record over the past 24 games, then you're ignoring the real issues and that makes you part of the problem. Blaming posters on a supporter forum is pointless. They donโ€™t hold any real power. It seems like your frustration is actually directed at the clubโ€™s power brokers, but you donโ€™t want to be seen as critical of them lest you look like a hypocrite for lecturing people about being mean to the coach and then being livid at the club for acting in the best interest of the supporters and club as a whole.

Iโ€™m genuinely grateful to Simon. He transformed us into a highly competitive team and gave us four to five strong seasons during his tenure. But the last two years marked a decline. While itโ€™s sad to part ways with the coach who delivered us a drought-breaking premiership, it was time. Iโ€™m glad the club recognised the need to act decisively. Locking in a new coach early so we can approach the trade period and pre-season with clarity and purpose.

Thank you, Simon. Youโ€™ll always be remembered for what you achieved.

You know nothing about Ollie Fan. Zero. Clearly you donโ€™t, becauseโ€ฆ โ€œhostileโ€???! LOL. You want hostile/personal attacks? That ainโ€™t Ollie Fan, but there are many others who fit the bill, too many others.

Ironically you have been the most hostile person in this thread and that includes Ollie Fan's attack on passionate Demon fans who dared to have an opinion that differed from his own.

Unfortunately Ghostwriter this thread which was intended to give people who arenโ€™t taking this news well, a chance to commiserate and support one another. However it has been infiltrated by some who donโ€™t share the same mindset, I mean those that are not feeling bad about the sacking of Simon Goodwin, in fact some that are in high spirits. Best that you take a break Ghostwriter as its best for your well being.๐Ÿฅฒ๐Ÿ’•

I really like what you said @Jaded No More

I stopped posting for the first 2/3rds of 2025 because I just found the vibe had become so antagonistic and angry. But Iโ€™m one of those egomaniacal nutcases, so eventually my sense of self importance kicked in - and Iโ€™m back!

I think everyone should remember that if we ran into each other on a train after the footy weโ€™d be happy to have a chat. Iโ€™d like it if we could all remember that when we speak to each other on here. We all want, and love, the same thing.

Now, and always, Go Dees.

ย

I was sad when the news first broke because Goody will always hold a special place in my heart.

BUT .... it was time .... and with each passing day my mood has picked up. The club is bigger than the individual and we will shortly have a new coach to get behind.

Onwards and upwards.

Jeezus. some people need to take a break from social media. i'm as sad as the next guy with a droughtbreaking flag coach getting sacked but I'm sadder with the direction the club has gone since winning the flag. i'm not ok where we are at as whole from the on field to the off field and everything in between.

also everyone is entitled to their own opinions. positive and negative and everything in between. no one should be gatekeepers.

I have to say I am mostly positive about Simon's departure.

In saying that, I also understand not everyone thinks like me.

But we all here bleed red and blue.

Too right, I agree with everything you say, with one exception, Iโ€™m not Sad.

Iโ€™m not Sad that a paid employee has been dismissed. If they weโ€™re a relative or personal friend I would feel differently. If it was unfair I would feel differently. People lose their jobs every day. Simon has been well compensated by all accounts. If he is re-employed soon it will be considered a financial windfall.

With any sacking, if it was unjust I would feel aggrieved. However this was not the case, IMO there is an argument that it could have happened even much sooner, even as early as early 2024.

Simon will always hold a special place in MFC history. I do not personally dislike him nor wish him any ill will.

If people choose to feel Sad that is their right. As it is my right not to feel sad. No one should be ostracised for feeling this way.

I barrack for the Melbourne Football Club, I do not barrack Simon Goodwin.

Also funny how very certain people on this site scream 'bullying' when they are subjected to the exact same behaviour that they partake in on a regular basis.

This response typifies Demonland. A poster being told to โ€œgrow upโ€ in a thread which invites expression of how weโ€™re feeling about the recent event.

Iโ€™d sooner eat my own vomit than share my feelings on this thread, a thread wherein we should feel comfortable to talk about it.

go get em girl (please tell me you dont eat your our vomit)

Oh please the people on this site have zero power over the decisions that the board makes. Grow up.

Did you see the article in the HS today by the convent of Deebrief? He says the "supporters" had a lot to do with it.

The main thing that the board would have considerd as far as supporters are concerned is the drop off of memberships and attendances.

The supporters havenโ€™t paid their membership and that was a problem. Unfortunately losing 15,000 members in 2 years when youโ€™re a small club hurts.

Do I think the board took that into consideration? Yes. But no they didnโ€™t trawl Demonland and read the โ€œIs Goody The Right Guyโ€ thread. Nobody has that much time on their hands.

What the rank and file supporter thinks is irrelevant to club decisions, but of course if youโ€™re asking supporters to put their hands in their pockets and they refuse, then thatโ€™s an issue.

Itโ€™s also an issue that we have so many fair weather fans who pick and choose when to support the club. I wish theyโ€™d just go away.

Do you not see the irony in that comment? He literally came on this thread to moan about online strangers for having another opinion.

And he's often the first person to start confrontations and resort to personal attacks. I'd say he's one of the most hostile people on this forum. Funny person to victimise.

Interesting take on me. I said I was angry about the decision and the way it was done and at the people who led to it. I wouldn't call that moaning; I'd call it fury. And I don't think I am hostile. I just don't like "supporters" who do nothing but undermine.

Still โ€˜drainedโ€™ by the pace at which this has happened โ€ฆโ€ฆ. (maybe I need to talk to my GP about a new pacemaker!).

I still havenโ€™t caught up with Monday eveningโ€™s poddy, but it seems slightly irrelevant now. Thanks anyway @demonlad and @binman . Iโ€™m sure the show was fully up to the usual high standard!

Iโ€™m not either GW. Nine years is a long time to be in a relationship and thatโ€™s what it has felt like. No coach is perfect and only one team gets to be premiers each season.

I will always be grateful for the joy and triumph of 2021 and only wish good things for Simon and his family moving forward. Iโ€™m sorry it had to end this way- I sincerely hoped for a different end to the season.

Iโ€™m the lone wolf in my WhatsApp group so Iโ€™m grieving on my own. Itโ€™s comforting that Iโ€™m not alone. ๐Ÿ˜“

Fair enough. I just thought that you overstated supporters' involvement in the sacking because there's no way the board bases its decisions on what people on this site are saying (as @Jaded No More said earlier).

But yeah, looking back I probably was harsh with the language that I used earlier so I apologise.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
