Folks dismissed it as a harmless bit of silliness. I took it as a sign of his character. It’s certainly not unforgivable but should he be given the job it would behove him to address this because clearly there are Dees fans who are still aggrieved by it.

Why would demons fans care if he slept to his own theme song? I’m lost.

It was after yet another thumping dealt to us. It was during a particularly bleak time for us. He was pretending to be bored having just smashed us and while I’m sure it was quickly forgotten by most people, it remains a sore point to some Dees fans, especially those who were watching the broadcast live, ie. it doesn’t seem as bad now, it certainly was in that moment.

Kelly was a lot younger back then. I assume he’s matured a lot since.

I can’t stand anyone associated with Geelong, but results speak for themselves. If Kelly impresses more than the experienced Buckley, then he will be a worthy selection.

He is not the only player who showed our club no respect back then. We were a joke.

I had no respect for us either... and I was a 17 game member... Or maybe I didnt respect myself 😄🤣😋

Ghosty, Tbh I couldnt care less about that, But I dont think there should be cameras in the change rooms. And I do not understand why people are still upset over this, what... 15 years ago? If he got the job I'd rather he never apologised for it.

KozzyCan, Absolutely agree.

Firstly, thank you for the respectful reply. It’s much appreciated that we can differ on this matter but still be civil 👍🏽

Some people are clearly affected in a way that others aren’t.

For one, I would hope that had we inflicted that level of pain onto Geelong that our players would walk taller/many of our supporters wouldn't blink if Gawn or Oliver did something like that in jest.

Having said this, no one knows the context of what Kelly was actually doing - it could have been a joke within part of the playing group, it could have been him joking that winning was getting boring - it certainly did not seem like a dig at Melbourne.

This would have ZERO bearing on the coaching selection process.

True, and I get that. But tbh, for me its not worth being upset over something (in my view) so minor so many years later. I got more important things to hate, like all things Carlton and Essendon :P ha ha

a lot of liniment sniffers are quick to dismiss the 22 dees that actually slept through these matches but hold a grudge on what an opposition player did 2 decades ago.

Aaaaand I’m out. Yet again.

See y’all in any thread other than this one 👋

James Kelly was the [censored] who pretended to sleep during a rendition of the Geelong theme song in the club rooms after beating us down at Geelong one year. I'm glad I'm not the only one salty about that still, @Ghostwriter .

Wouldn't stop me from hiring him, but shows his arrogance.

Ah that’s right , thanks.

We all do dumb things, and I can forgive some things but screw that guy!

We got our revenge on Kelly and Geelong when we spoilt Corey Engright's 300th party, and twice in 2021: Max's goal after the siren to claim top spot and the shellacking we gave them in the 2021 PF.

Let bygones, be bygones!

After a bit of googling it was apparently in mid 2010. They were in the middle of their dominant era smashing teams every single week. Seems pretty clearly a joke about getting bored singing the song so much. Nothing to do with us.

Apparently it wasn't only against the Demons that season. Seemed they had an in-joke going on at the time. Immature yes. Should that preclude him from being a senior coach now 15 year later. Not at all.

SEN newsbreaker Tom Morris thinks that the vacant Melbourne coaching job is Nathan Buckley’s if he wants it.

The former Collingwood coach has long been considered a frontrunner for the role after Simon Goodwin’s sacking, and Buckley himself has confirmed he’s going through the process as the Demons narrow down their shortlist of candidates.

While it’s believed that all of Brendon Lade, Hayden Skipworth, Steven King and James Kelly are also speaking to the Demons, Morris says the hot seat already has Buckley’s name on it if he tells the club he wants the job.

“I keep saying the same thing, if Buckley wants it, it's his,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.

“What has been underestimated, though, people have been saying, ‘Well, what are these other assistant coaches doing?’.

“I think it actually bodes well for Brendon Lade, who I know Alan Richardson really rates, if he comes second in this race.

“Yes, I am saying it (with a degree of certainty). If Buckley wants it, it’s his and I haven’t wavered from that view.”

While Morris is strong in his belief, Melbourne great Garry Lyon’s understanding is quite different after speaking to key people at the club.

Lyon believes that the race is still wide open to the half dozen candidates and that a decision hasn’t already been made.

“He said definitively that the decision has been made,” Lyon said.

“My understanding is that is not the case, and the messaging coming out of Melbourne is that is 100 per cent not the case.

“Now, Tom might be proven to be right in time, I don't know, but my understanding right now this second, is that is not the case. A decision hasn't been made.

“The process is to unfold, and they've shortlisted, I understand it to be somewhere in the vicinity of half a dozen applicants, and the process starts now.

“I will tell you this, Nathan Buckley doesn't think that's the case… he said last night that he's 100 per cent in for the process.”

Lyon is also concerned for the other candidates if Morris’ report is to be believed.

With the club putting together a panel of key club figures Brad Green, Steve Smith, Paul Guerra and Alan Richardson as well as Jobe Watson, Frank Ponissi and Meahan Callaghan to pick the next coach, Lyon is certain that Melbourne haven’t made an early call with so many voices set to offer their input.

“You know how much time I've got for Tom…. but if people believe that, or people around the people who are in for these jobs start to believe that, then they get questions on the back of it… ‘Why would I be putting my hand up if this decision's already been made?’,” Lyon said.

“The Melbourne Football Club are definitive in saying that that is not the case.

“I've got messages in the last 10 minutes that's saying that is categorically untrue. So, make of that what you will.”

The Demons hope to make their appointment ahead of the 2025 AFL Grand Final on September 27.

The astonishing difference between are thinking Club Stalwart and a mediocre media moron. (Who by the way shows again that he couldn't care about anyone)

To be fair though, neither Ghosty, myself or anyone else said it should. We were just salty.

I really really hope our panel are sensible enough not to ask one of the candidates why he had a cheeky laugh in the change rooms 15 years ago.

Ha! Me to, that would be a bit weird given the esteem that he is held in, I probably didn't explain myself - I wouldn't do it during the interview process.

I think people should really not get so upset by something insignificant as that. Maybe the players should get upset by it as they were on the receiving end, but not people sitting on a couch who have no involvement. I would have laughed. It’s the ultimate troll move, it builds a bit of tension and anger between the teams which is always good for football.

IF Buckley wants it?!

The one clear thing is that Buckley is interested, as he has applied for the job and was as keen as anyone I can recall when first asked about it. Usually candidates play a straight bat in the media but he was caught on the hop early and showed his cards.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
