It always amazes me why so called leaders cant keep their mouths shut.

Look at the cabinet for Christs sake. It leaks while cabinet meetings are taking place!

I think itโ€™s very tawdry how people know full well leaking is prohibited under every code of conduct Iโ€™ve seen but do it anyways.

Itโ€™s the opposite of leadership

Yes, hence why connected was in 'quotation marks'.

IIRC Morris kick-started his career by reporting a rift between McCartney and Goodwin

That's a start.

Such a daft response. Did you actually read, and consequently, understand my my question?

Um - no it's not. By that time it's as good as public knowledge. Do you really expect 100 people to stay 'mum' once the decision is announced internally?

The decision to part ways with Goodwin was made Monday night and then delivered to him in person that night, with the players to be informed Tuesday morning, yet Lever himself says that while the leadership group were in a zoom call discussing how it will be dealt with and the fall out, they became aware that Tom Morris was already reporting it publically.

Therefore Lever says in his recent interview that he wants the leadership group to find out who was behind the leak.

How do you know "every step, every issue leaks?" You've done a comparative analysis of that that hasn't leaked that that that has?

Well obviously you can't compare what you don't know, but also how many other clubs had a player potentially being shopped who everyone in the footy world knew in intimate detail the personal issues going on at the time.

How many clubs have players basically telling media people supposedly through third parties that they would love to be anywhere but Melbourne?

How many clubs have a club representative go on live radio and state that she had not been in contact with the family of a seriously injured player without providing the context or explanation of why that might be that could have cleared that up?

How many clubs shop a player and it gets back to the player within 24 hours and then he goes and checks out a farm near Geelong?

How many clubs have articles written where a person at a leadership meeting gave the media person a blow-by-blow account?

Does every club have multiple articles published where the author claims that an attendee of a leadership meeting said the following was discussed?

I should clarify, Brad green is a footy person that Iโ€™ve met a few times and really rate, which I know not everyone agrees with. I think generally speaking the degree to which โ€œweโ€™re a messโ€ is overstated, though Iโ€™d like the leaks to stop and I personally am unsure if Nathan Buckley is really an upgrade on what we already had and are now paying not to coach.

theyโ€™re the experts and Iโ€™ll trust them to make the right call. I hope the leaks that might exist do stop, and things settle when Steven smith and Paul guerra are in their seats and we have a new coach and hopefully a period with a bit more stability

Who was the last coach we got from Collingwood ?

If Goodwin's ideas were too old etc, why not get a "newby" i.e. Enright, King, Skipworth etc.

By the way, I was extremely impressed by the way Chapman carried himself at his Press conference . Seems to have some balance. (Plus he could try out all the new moves on the C'well U 12's .....) Seriously though the players obviously listened to him (New & Old).

I sincerely hope that the new coach is football oriented and not a "Marketing" choice.

Well I suppose third parties = manager. But anyway the Saints seem to have a couple who want out. Miochek not happy at the Pies. TDK wants out of Carlton, all year. OHenry not happy at the Cats. I assume there are few at the Bombers who wants to get away from Scott. Butters wants out of PA? That Harley Reid chap wanted out of WC before he got there. Allegedly Lever wanted out but now wants to stay. That Wade chaps supposedly wants to come to the Dees from ? etc

Simon Goodwins sacking was leaked to the media half way through a zoom meeting letting our senior players know their coach has been sacked.

Thatโ€™s a monumental governance failing that something like they leaked out.

Just so as I understand that second sentence, the word "they" is they (because that doesn't make sense) and not "that" right?

It should be that and my phone has dogged me with autocorrect. Good catch

Keep living in denial mate, problems don't disappear just because you want them to. You want the club to be a success stop tolerating garbage and excusing poor behaviour/performance.

Well, by your measure, we'd have to rule out Skipworth then, as he's at Collingwood...

For all we know it was goody who told morris. He was no longer employed , why would he hold the info to himself?

Iโ€™d be shocked if his severance deal with the club didnโ€™t have solid non-disclosure clauses

I have no opinion on whether Buckley would be a good coach or not, but he's done great PR to become favourite by being the only person to express an interest in the job.

P.S - How many two team coaches have ever moved to the club they had their last win against?

On the leaking angle, first person Goodwin called after Green and the board possie had finished giving him the news, was his manager... my total speculation is it's the managers, the confidants of players, coaches and the media are the source of most "leaks" in the footy ecosystem.

Information is valuable, so gaining credits with Caro or Morris by leaking Goodwin's sacking leads is part of grooming Caro or Morris so that when managers want to influence the market for their players (i.e. do their jobs during contract negotiations) then their mates in the media will be amenable...

Both John Longmire and Adam Simpson pulling out of the opportunity to coach the Melbourne Football Club is disappointing but not surprising. They both were exhausted mentally and felt cooked. However, is coaching the Melbourne Football Club seen as a "poisoned chalice" perhaps? Simon Goodwin certainly wanted to keep coaching the Demons though!

Our list isn't that bad is it? I think we have a good mix of senior players and up-and-coming younger players who would make coaching the Demons an exciting opportunity. Wouldn't becoming the "new voice" be an amazing challenge?

It looks like it's Nathan Buckley's role to lose?

I also think Nathan Buckley is pragmatic and knows it would be a tougher chance to get the coaching job at the Tasmania Devils. Why not coach the Melbourne Football Club, especially if you have a deep and burning desire to win a Premiership. We all know Nathan Buckley still has that intense desire to do it and win a Flag in his own right.

My only concern is how will Nathan Buckley relate with the players? I think he has "mellowed" a bit but also hope he has a hard edge too. Nathan Buckley definitely gives the impression of authority and commands respect. Lastly, I would rather the coach be respected by the Demons players than liked too much as a "best mate". In the end it will be up to Nathan Buckley to find that balance between respect and likeability.

Being a teacher is a lot like being a coach, you hope you're liked but your job is to educate.

Totally agree, 100%. Normally always an ulterior motive behind them, it's often the managers with loose lips.

Think you nailed it.

Lot of back scratching.

Just like Ross Lyon has mellowed and coaches differently to his previous stints no doubt Buckley will as well. These guys are smart and adapt to whatever is thrown at them just as the players do.

One thing is for sure we have a far better list than the Saints did when Ross took over and our list is still way better.

We need a natural KPF who can find space ala BBB and a plan for the eventual retirement of the irreplaceable Gawny.

Maysy is 33 and not long left. Lever will be 30 next year so a few up his sleeve. TMc is 33 next year. But we have Turner and Howes developing and Petty can go back.

Mids covered with Windsor, Langford and Lindsay coming through. Kolt as a forward/mid.

Kosi a gun mid/Fwd and Prasad as a small quick fwd in the 2026 draft.

So far its all media talk about Buckley. No real substance to it coming from the club, is there??

They'll be nothing from the club until the coach is announced, but the media just about always gets these things right

I can see things going officially quiet for a few weeks now.

Perhaps some media "exclusives" ( straight from their imagination) . Now comes the "dance" ..folk stick their left legs in, left legs out, shake it all about... go away, have a think. Today something hot is tomorrow's cool...

Where there's no news the void will be "filled"

I very much doubt anyone will over commit their position.

If anyone has dealt with court run mediations .... this will appear similar iI think. Not a lot to be seen, but a lot happening behind closed doors.

Fun and games

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
