Lol, what's funny is that Kelly doesn't meet the 8+ years of experience the CEO and panel have said they allegedly want.

He was an assistant at Essendon for the 2018-2020 seasons and at Geelong for the 2022-2025 seasons.

2018 to the end of 2025 is 8 years. While not coaching in 2021 I think it still counts as the year would have involved reflecting on his 2018 - 2020 stint and also preparing and applying for his 2022 job.

The entire cats culture has been built around respecting opposition, being yourself and being selfless on and off the field. I think a Kelly/bartel double has the potential to transform the club. It would be a risk, especially if Buckley is keen. But if we make that call I won’t be unhappy

My Pies tragic friend says absolutelty steer clear of Buckley.

I love your left field (maybe) thinking being a big fan of Bartel's thinking. Its the whole package . Kelly/Bartel plus others? Whats wrong with that. Guerra has already cleverly signalled he doesn't know what he doesn't know publicly, and what better way to strengthen the footy IQ than bring in Jimmy as well.

Buckley reeks of the old messiah fix - e.g Ronald dale in 1981, Carl before that. etc.

Amazing test for new president and team IMO.

BTW - I HATE the cats but can live with this.

Caracella is Richmond's midfield coach. Their forwards coach is Chris Newman, who had a long career playing as (checks notes) a defender.

There's an oft quoted argument that defenders make good forward coaches as they played seeing ahead of the ball down the ground and know what it takes to stop a forward line.

Hence via reverse engineering, they know how to build a forward system.

Just saying.

There's just been a hell of a lot of colouring in of James Kelly's attributes in this thread without any basis except a report that he impressed the selection committee and he's been at Geelong so must be good.

Yeah I'm a bit wary of picking someone because they interviewed well. I think we should have been already 95% sure on who we'd pick before interviews. It's not like we have no idea who they are and what they have done unlike the common workplace interviews.

They did research across the comp and initial chats to form a short list for the formal interviews so they were down to 6 before then. Take out Skipworth that’s 5 that they thought were all worthy candidates.

There’s no shortage of things they can do in interviews to test candidates. Aside from them laying out their vision and their level of preparation (training sessions, review methods, coaching structure) you can do things like mock press conferences and player meetings.

I've also been saying the same thing. Though good line coaches are good line coaches, regardless of where they played.

I'm wary of the so called Cat's culture.

It relies on the local media turning a blind eye to what happens down that way. And, let's not forget the mates their CEO Steve Hocking still has at AFL House.

Their success is in part due to favourable fixtures at kitty park that almost guarantee making finals. Once there to their credit they know how to win and Scott is an outstanding coach to make the most of the opportunity.

All that will not easily translate to good results at the dees or anywhere else. It might but wouldn't rely on it when choosing our coach.

He didn't coach in 2021, this is his 7th season of coaching. That's not 8+ seasons.

The club is reminding me of the two guys in the movie Office Space who get wowed by that one guy who doesn't want to work there

He quit in Feb 2021, to spend more time with his kids. We can round that up!

With crayons

None of us really have any idea about who would make the best coach. It’s just that I and a few others know it isn’t Buckley. 😂

Do you work for the AFL by any chance?

I fear they don’t.

I knew you’d join us on eventually 😜

Buckley is still my first preference.

If he decides not to go ahead then happy for Kelly if they deem him the best fit.

other than the media adoring him and that he stopped our dog running away from mrs ww one freezing cold night at toorak park, i really don't see the appeal of buckley

he has no experience, really, outside the filth and media

his only previous other afl club experience was back in 1993 in his first year as a player at the bears under robert walls

other than that he's been coached by:

  • matthews (two years)

  • shaw (four years)

  • malthouse (rest of his career until end 2007)

he then worked in the media for a year, and then was at the filth as an assistant for two years and senior for nine and a half, before getting sacked

media for four seasons since

that's a lot of 'comfort zone' with a plethora of individual accolades and no ultimate team success

Josh Gaeblich tonight mentioned that Brendon Lade was another that had a strong interview with us and apparently the panel were very impressed.

Why does literally everything gets leaked. I know it's not a biggie, but it's something that probably shouldn't be talked about outside the panel until it's over.

It’s almost certainly the coaches and managers leaking this rather than the panel.

Wasn't Lade at St Kilda during Alan Richardson's last year there (2019)? He's listed as Senior Assistant.

Meh, panel where probably just being nice. They are not going to say they were [censored] to their face.

The panel also wouldn’t tell them they’re great. But if a prospective senior coach lets out talk they were amazing then the future job they go for they’ll have a leg up potentially. Especially helpful if in this case they never had a legitimate shot at the role anyways. At least they get something beyond experience

It’s like artificial momentum

How do you know the leak is coming from the club?

The coaches of the managers do leak more then anything.

Not arguing with the expert at getting appointed Mr Lasso 😉

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
