''I don't often post rumours but I can tell you with certainty that Steven Smith has met for a coffee with Nathan Buckley re potentially coaching the MFC.

I can't tell you how the meeting went or if Buckley has any interest, because I don't know. I only know that they met.

I won't post this on the main forum because it serves no purpose and could potentially cause (further) instability. It's just not needed at the moment.

For me, Smith should conduct this sort of due diligence and I'm glad he's on the front foot. Of course, it may all come to nothing.''

I then heard from a second unrelated source, not long after, that Melbourne was keen on Buckley.

Tonight on 360 there will be Horse, Simpson and Goodwin. Will make for very interesting viewing.

Interestingly around that time period we had just come off the back of two back to back smashings from North and Gold Coast.

I remember after the North or Gold Coast game, I voiced openly that I was officially on the its time to move Goodwin on stage. Not only had supporters had enough but clearly so did our board members.

Clearly Buckley and Longmire are our standout targets it seems.

they have been a nothing club for nearly 30 years, cant see the next coach getting them out of the doldrums with that list either. i reckon bucks would want a quick turnaround and would rather choose melbourne, same with horse.

Longmire has a better coaching career, winning a premiership and making four other grand finals. He'd be number one choice if we want an experienced coach to set standards, followed by Buckley. For whatever reason, I don't rate Simpson as highly as though two.

If we want an up and coming assistant, Corey Enright and Ash Hansen are the ones I've heard are rated extremely highly and are defined to be senior coaches. Obviously we'd go through a selection process, but I'd hope those two were part of that and strong contenders.

I'm unsure what the right path is, but with how rudderless our club is from a leadership perspective, an experienced coach might be required. Whoever it is, they have a decent playing list to build on, and we could bounce quickly in the next two seasons, even if we lose a few senior core players and go the youth path.

You could be right, and I agree that their list is not in a great spot.

However lets not forget that we have entirely new leadership coming in, which is always a risk for a new coach. Our club has been in shambles off the field for at least 2 seasons. We have 2 important players who might want out. We train across 2 different venues, one of which is a fair way away for most people.

Do I think our list is an attractive proposition? Absolutely. I truly don't think we are as bad as our results show, but as a club we are not exactly screaming pick me.

If it makes everyone feel better, Carlton has won more wooden spoons in the AFL era (ie, 1991 onwards) than any other club. They have five in the Wooden Spoon drawer. We've only got three.

Not one Carlton player selected in the 22 under 22 speaks volumes. They're lacking a lot more than people think.

Adam Simpson is the worst option IMO. Eagles may have won the flag in 2018 but watching them under Simmo was the blandest and most sleep inducing football I can recall.

His game style was also left in the dust a few years after the flag and the results post 2019 prove that.

no but our playing list is apparently united. our most important players are on long term contracts and arent going anywhere unless we allow them to, facilities wise whilst its a drive, casey is still very good. And hopefully this can be ironed out anyway in the near future.

I think onfield will be way more important to these two people than offield

While I agree, they're no 1 pick last year Jagger Smith (touted to be the no1 pick overall) has been injured all year and some of their kids eg Moir showed quite a bit against us!

I suppose it would be alright if Collingwood were the team we defeated in the GF. I could probably put up with that.

The only benefit of Buckley expressing some interest is that other coaches will know there is some competition and can't fluff us around and over price themselves.

Otherwise he is still too robotic and doesn't have it in his DNA to build natural connections with players.
