As for the Blight comparison in 1876, totally different game. I can see you're reaching for another example, because in the modern era, in the 21st century, which is now a quarter of the way in, there is not a single coach who's coached elsewhere and then come to a new club and won a flag.

Edit. I'll correct myself. Malthouse at the richest club in the land was the only coach to win a flag having won flags elsewhere in 2010.

He mentioned the issues at hand for us, knows that we have too many inside mids and the game is now transition.

Seems he’s done his homework. One to keep an eye on.

I doubt I will change anyone’s mind but I think Bucks was a Melbourne supporter growing up.

I vaguely remember bucks talking about how he doesn’t rate the role of ruckman in the game and I am curious how that would work with a team built around max gawn

Just listened to him talking with Whately. Agree with your synopsis...however, to me it was, "yeah, I'm hungry and keen, I need to get my head back in that space, as this is the first real opportunity I've had to think about it, but I like the list and think the culture and fortunes can turn quickly". I reckon he may emerge as a front-runner.

FWIW, I think he would be better the second time around. I think he would be better coaching outside of the Collingwood bubble he was a part of for so long. I think he would build immediate connections with players and demand instant respect from them.

He has been my preference for a while, based on the way he analyses our games. He may have been watching closely for other reasons, who knows?

They've definitely given him a call already then I would say. I feel like if he wanted to coach again, then he would be probably top of the clubs list. Longmire is well-established in Sydney, and I have heard whispers around that he would be unwilling to move down to Melbourne, so while he would be good I think we won't be able to entice him over. I could see Buckley being a good option IF there is good help and assistants around him (Bruce would be good, or other experienced assistants from other clubs) I would be mildly angry if we chose Simpson given how quickly West Coast went down hill, and I think Hinkley will take a break for a year or so

Edit: I am coming around to Bucks, I was originally very skeptical, but could see it happening.

Longmire is still based in Sydney forget about him as an option.

Like other posters have said and I agree he's had everything handed to him on a silver platter up in Sydney and 1 premiership to show for it.

Yes he made 3 other grand finals got smacked by 12 goals in 2 of them and lost to a team who finished 7 on the ladder after 22 rounds.

Buddy gifted wrapped for him, the academy picks, COLA, favourable scheduling, No pressure from the Sydney public, not living in the fish bowl environment etc....

Its a big no from me.

Not that the Board will admit this but Goody was right about stability and consequently I think that means we need a proven senior coach who can demand the respect of the players and the Board. An untried coach will not succeed until we get a stable base.

Having reflected overnight I think its pretty much Horse or bust. He was smart enough to know he couldn't go around again at Sydney and had a succession plan in place. Yes he lost GF's but he got there and I may have previously noted the SCG home ground advantage is very significant until you get to finals where its a liability. He will have an immediate and positive impact on our playing group and trade targets.

I think the idea floated last night of an Enright/ Hinkley double act is intriguing. Not sure its the answer.

Clearly there is unfinished business for Buckley, which may be the reason he is not right for the job. I

I just have no idea about Simpson other than he recent TV form, which was very different to his last years at WCE.

Are people serious about Hird? Really? What did he achieve other than running a program that set his beloved club back decades.

As others have suggested, quite a few lifelong members may decide enough is enough, me included.

Longmire has, I believe, settled in in Sydney. Would he be at all interested in changing homes again, even if we did want him?

But, would having a horse on board help with our overtures to Caulfield?

Buckley definitely sounds interested and I have no doubt that the fact he never won a Premiership as a player or coach would still burn him inside

Whether he’s got the chops to coach 2026 football is another question and why I would preference Horse over him (given he’s only a year removed from a GF), but I wouldn’t doubt his desire to succeed should he want/get the job

Listening to the Bucks and whateley segment.

Bucks just talked himself into going for it. Went from yeah nah to 'theyre a big club with a storied history and good experienced list' and his facial cues gave it away very quickly - he is 100% gunning for the gig at the end.

Would he be my first choice - doubt it, but 2nd time around getting some ducks in a row it could work with him.

Still prefer Horse or Simmo, but Bucks has a quality about him - all 3 would demand a working FD structure and bring the required gravitas to focus the playing group

Whoever they bring in has to be fresh and get into the type of game style that will get us back to top 8, and hopefully top 4.

I think most coaches would be thinking if this team can fix up the inside 50 connections and find a key forward they can bounce back really quickly, especially if clarry comes good
