umpiring is poor for sure

the aspect which has to be addressed is umpires down the field paying frees and effectively overruling umps closer to the play

that free against trac last night was an obvious mistake paid by an umpire that was 40 meters away

surely decisions by umps closer to the play should take precedence over down field umps

Same old story last night.

These fools are ruining it for me. From mad 50 m penalties to not fifteen. It's just such a poor standard.

But hey, we should be good enough that the umpiring doesnt matter. We weren’t. We are miles off 2021. And thats not down to the umpires !

I dunno final round 2021 we had a deliberate and 50m penalty go our way. We win the minor premiership and go onto win the premiership.

If that wasn't paid would we have gone on to win the premiership? Well never know thankfully.

Decisions at crucial times influence matches and for whatever reason they seem to go against us more often than not by a multiple of about 10

Didn’t we have a deliberate paid against us in the last minute. I think it was Brayshaw which was a howler that set in motion that last play.

Yep.

Nobody is complaining about legitimate frees that are paid. It's the BS ones mainly paid by umps 60 metres away and the clear ones not paid. Thats where the manipulation of results comes in.

The only good thing about the Clarry holding the ball howler was the passion and vitriol of the Melbourne supporters that followed. The MCC members close to the incident, myself included, went ballistic. The sad thing about it and the dubious Curnow free that followed was that these decisions killed the contest. To that point, either team could have won, and the Dees certainly had the momentum. But no, again the game is decided by the [censored] in yellow and not by the players. Interestingly, regarding the extraordinary run of free kicks to Carlton in the last quarter, most of them were there (what was Jake Bowey thinking???), but the last two decisions really decided the game in the end.

I struggle to call the Oliver non-free a mistake.

It was unobscured in open play, yet none of the four could see it?

They chose not to pay it.

Exactly. The non paying of frees is where the cheating happens.

So tiresome.

There is no conspiracy. Just ineptitude.

Having said that, whilst I disagree with it, the umpire presumably will have said Durdin had no prior.

There is no conspiracy by there is consistency we always get screwed at crucial times in matches. Happened twice now against Carlton. Petraccas goal and Clarrys tackle both not paid both were there. Both cost us the game

Personally, whilst I get mad a lot of decisions (because the umpire is blatantly wrong), it’s so easy for us sitting on our couch to call it out, we have the courtesy of 10 replays and 10 angles.

Until the AFL removes umpires and makes it some sort of AI where there are no mistakes, then there will always be decisions that are wrong and that’s the beauty of the game.

They go both ways. (Most of the time)

There’s no game in AFL history where a umpiring decision decides a game in full, the game could and should have been won by the players, ie: capitalizing on set shots, no turn overs, etc.

For us to say umpires should be perfect, we should say that to the players too then.

They do the best job they can, and even though frustrating sometimes, that’s the game.

Given how pedantic the AFL / umpires can be I am amazed how often a player takes a mark and a player who is not the closest will role in and stand the mark much closer than they should be.

Also LJ moved 5cm’s forward today and got called play on, yet just about every player around the ground from a mark or free kick moves half a meter of the line and they don’t call play on. Meanwhile the player on the mark has to stand.

It doesn't have to be a conspiracy to be openly cheating. Where the conspiracy is planted, is before the start of the season. Where idle talk on players fairness is discussed along with perhaps favourite players and Clubs, or even interpretation of new/old /hard rules.

I know I know, what else are they going to dis cuss....how many frees they give against teams they don't like or players they do. That could not have anything to do with it, could it.

Last night was the classic case of the scenario where two things can both be right.

We were woeful for much of the night.

And the umpiring was appalling and had a material impact on the game.

Sorry, do you mean a decision in the last minute is no more important than ones in the other 100 something 100 minutes? I still can't agree with you. Do the umpire bosses review the umpiring of entire games. I bet there are times where there's a few howlers and team A should have had 3 frees awarded 25 metres out and / or team B should have less frees at similar spots at the other end. Given plenty of margins are under a goal it can be all of one mistake which has the wrong team win.

Of course that’s annoying, and shouldn’t happen.

But I can put any money on the fact that I bet the team that last due to “a bad decision” made a load of mistakes, didn’t capitalize on shots on goal which could also have made the difference.

It’s not like you look at the scores card and see 0 turn overs and 21 goals straight and no points.

It’s like us against St Kilda this year. 7.21 scorecard.

Say an umpire made a mistake on the dying minute, and was wrong and “it cost us the game”. Surely you’re not blaming the umpire when we missed 21 points….

Both make mistakes, and both are human. Just not sure why it’s only seen that umpires can cost a team a game when usually the team could have also done won it on their own merit.

Umpiring Standard ?

Is there one ?

@Demonland Surely the Dees have to ask for a please explain from the AFL. We are struggling for any relevance in the AFL now and it hurts that we are a club that just rolls on and accepts this appalling umpire standard. If this happened to other club, they question it and the media gets it in the spotlight. Do something Demons. !!!

I saw that one yesterday. Disgraceful.

The ump said to Jackson, you took a step. The kick was reversed and the pies had a shot on goal.

I then watched players taking multiple steps off their line for the rest of the game before play on would be called.

Players aren't standing the mark always anymore and players with the ball move a number of metres off their line before play on is called.

There's no consistency in how the rules are applied.

Insane.

As was this 50m and gifted goal to the pies after a Freo player gestured towards the screen.

No abuse no arguing, just a gesture, 50m. Yet players are back to arguing with umps all the time.

And it was another dodgy free kick paid in front of the goals for the pies to start with.

And people wonder why I say the umps are doing what HQ want them to in relation to certain teams.

Also - when we hear the 'pay insufficient intent' on the TV as the Sherrin is rolling towards the boundary line - who is that? One of the umps or someone elsewhere? We do know they are 'coached' during the game, so it could be anyone - from the ARC maybe?

You are giving an excuse of just about a whole years stuff ups by umpires

You cannot change rule interpretation on a week to week basis just to appease crowds, players or AFL ratbags including media. OR obviously results.

If you can then there is something much more serious going on here...

Compare and contrast with Xerri furiously pointing at the scoreboard and mouthing off when he dropped maxy off the ball and a completely reasonable free was paid.
