Not helped by the revolving door of other forwards - not particularly anyone's fault either (injuries to Jeffo and Petty, suspension to Johnson etc.)

If we could have a settled forward line for a month with either Turner or Petty alongside JVR, we might all be able to see where this is heading.

I agree. As mentioned earlier... Adhoc changes just cause calamity. I'm all for rotating personnel through roles ( esp if season is stuffed anyway... and imho.. it's belly up ) but do so in blocks. If nothing else is better for assessment. Results may vary but a better understanding of how well the individual coped, indeed how group setups and synchronicities fared is more likely

My point re Weed was he was deemed as having potential when young ... but even with added years just didn't cut the mustard. Not all players do. Jeffo.. young , been in the system a number of years now and really hasn't taken the next step and possibly never will ( a la Weed )

Jeffo , for mine, and please there's no personal slight intended, this is just football related observations, is in that category of players who are too good really to play VFL but just not there either for AFL. 2nd tier role players can be sort of carried in a well performing team.

He is neither in a 2nd tier role and we are far from a well performing team.

That's my point in this regard.

Understand your points, but, I can't see where he is too good for the VFL, have not really seen a game where he has taken the opposition apart, that's why they have had him play down back to see if he really is a player or not. He has been in the system long enough for us to see if he has it, but unfortunately, he doesn't. No slight on him as a person, just as an AFL level player. I dearly hope I am totally wrong.

Except for the parts where

Freo played a totally different game style to GWS

Slow switch maintain possession as opposed to taking grass and speed on the ball off half back and good players by foot getting the ball in quicker favouring forwards.

So it’s not so much Hogan playing a different style it’s the teams he was in who played completely different styles

And Hogan played very well in our 2018 forward line that focused on faster ball movement.

If we don't lose Hogan, we don't get May. If we don't get May, we don't win a flag.

Hogan was never going to make it at Melbourne, just as he was never going to make it at Freo.

He needed a lot of time, maturity, and to be away from the fishbowl of AFL to finally start taking his footy seriously.

It brings me great joy to see him play such great footy, and I hold nothing against the club or him for that.

I was only referencing the fact that Hogan played better for Melbourne and for GWS because we moved the ball quicker than Freo.

And because Freo has a real knack for ruining talent. See also: L. Jackson

Bbp he had a poor last half of last season. He is now in double territory for poor games. Sadly there is no one to take his place.

re Fritta - Melksham can take his place. OMG many of us could replace him on current form (tongue in cheek)

Many of us would have blown up before we reached the banner 😀

We have virtually no injuries so we should see a continued improvement across the next month I reckon

Some teams injury lists are really growing and this always has an impact eventually

Can’t see us beating the best team in the comp though. Their midfield is ridiculously good.

This week’s banner will say…

GIVE IT YOUR ALL

WITHOUT REGRET

ANOTHER TRIP

WE WON’T FORGET

TRIP is in a different colour. Of course, by TRIP we mean our trip to Brisbane, not something that happened during our match last week which went unpunished

😉

I would have popped a calf walking up the race!!

Didn't Brisbane lose the first five matches last year and win.the flag...and didn't Footscray win the flag from the bottom half of the eight.

I don't think the we're done .yet

IF IF IF

we get selection right

and stick with the winning team.. of the run of three we just selected against to and subsequently lost

Teams get on a roll in.games but also in seasons. and towards the end..and into the finals..when they start to gel..

It's a long season

That means stop living on.hope for JVR and Jefferson They are not playing their roles. Lastvweek I wrote I hoped JVR didn't gum up the open forward structure that han been working...and then there was Jefferson!!

Fritta and Kolt go to the twos till they demonstrate some BRILLIANCE. Present form not cutting it

We must stick with Turner Melksham and Petty forward, Lever comes back and resumes interception back May is nursed and the team as a whole is blessed with no more serious injuries

On paper we have a good team

Just need to get the paper team on the park and GIVE THEM TIME AS A TEAM!!

This is best team on paper in form

Bowey May McVee

Rivers Lever Salem

Langton Oliver Lindsey

Langford Petty Melksham

Kozzie Turner Chandler

Gawn Petracca Viney (tagger)

Int: Sparrow Windsor Spargo TMac (2nd Ruck)? Windsor

Then comes..

Fritta Kolt Howes Hore Sharp to be promoted after demonstrating brilliance

How do you quote just part of a post here??

And Correction for my last post....

Brisbane lost the first three last year, not five but Hawthorn did lose the first five...

..I really think those who say to give up on this year and start playing players who haven't really earnt a spot but need more games or any other such rot, need to pull their heads in.

That's defeatism and is the sort of talk propagated by losers...

We have a very good list and you'd better believe it .

BUT, I don't think they are being played in positions that capitalise on the skills each individual play brings to the table

.e.g

Why wasn't Langford played in the opening round? Abysmal decision!.

Rivers plays better run and carry kicking long when the game is in front of him. Should remain on Half back line.

Viney has only just reinvented himself..his delivery into f50 has been terrible. Much better playing tag and coming off his player.when possible.

Langton thrives running in space. Whoever thought to play him as a mid is a fool.

Playing Turner back is ridiculous when he proved himself last year to be a reliable set shot kick and a solid lead and mark..So far ahead of JVR it's not funny.. And they bring JVR back into a winning team and shift Turner back with dire consequences for forward structure...It is gobsmackingly stupid. JVR should be tried back in reserves. Not a natural forward...but could transform to a Tomlinson type..not sure..worth a try! As I said previously Moore started forward and failed but succeeded as a defender. Different skills required between defending with the game in front of you and needing to turn on a dime and shoot for goal or find a target...

Oliver started basically as an inside mid feeding the ball out of contest. Didn't actually kick that much and added his kicking later which is really pretty poor..long bombs nowhere..should go back to what he made his name at. He actually invented the overhead handpass and changed the game. Now every Tom Dick and Harry is doing it. Kudos to Clarry!!

TMac underutilised as a swingman going forward. Excelled forward for a time went back having lost form to regain form and now a regular in form. Last year was moved forward against Fremantle in Alice when the game was over and marked and kicked a couple when none else could. Now he is back in form with Lever coming back could be used all over the ground where needed and as chop out for Max.

No the season isn't over. Every team is beatable and we are just getting our best team back on the park. Been plugging gaps so far this year. Had three on the trot which by all measures should have been four.

Naysayers...Wake up!!!

Or the other type which is arguably more fun than playing football

This weeks selection-

Out- Jeffo, JVR, Fritter and Spargo

In- Howes or Kentfield, Melky, Petty and Doggy Brown.

Petty and Turner to dominate forward, Melky to keep Harris Andrews quiet. Doggy Brown to Zorko.

Feels like we've got the bye this week. Most posters seem really flat about this one

*game's out of town (although people travelling and the locals will be pumped)

*it's a probable loss

*people are livid at Goodwin, Griffiths and our overall season to date

*people are gravitating towards the Luke Jackson news

There's just such a meh feel about this game. Hopefully we're in for a nice surprise.

I’m fully pumped. We’ll roll Brisbane by 17 points. Kozz will star, Clarry will shut Neale down, Sparrow will do a job on Zorko and Petty’s tears will be that of joy.

are you inhaling, drinking or snorting? whatever it is I want some.

Fullarton?? Park me, but at least he has some form behind him, unlike selecting Jeffo on zero form!

Life big fella, just sucking it in!

On paper, the currently listed setup must be the shortest forward line EVER

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
