IN the last example Melk kicks to Spargo who's in a one on one against a cats defender.

So dumb

Our forward line is the football equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle.

Another way I'd look at this is that we are getting better ball movement into our forward half, and have options for a shorter kick or handball inboard but are reverting to old habits of deep entry to create a stoppage and trap ball in our forward 50.

I like the positive spin!

I think a big part is where we are playing certain personnel. Some hard decisions may need to be made if we want to get our season back on track.

We have players making space but we don’t have players who steady and look and we also do t have many players who can kick. Either way there’s plenty to work with…..isn’t there??

To be fair, a few were saying it, but the majority thought everything was OK until now.

Didn’t Goodwin say we’re getting ‘high quality entries’ (or something along those lines) after the Geelong game?

50 inside 50’s, for 6 goals. 16 scores.

Geelong had 49 inside 50’s, for 12 goals. 25 scores.

It’s hearing him say this that confirms to me that he doesn’t reckon the vast majority of our entries are an issue which is WILD. Must just solely be an issue with the forwards then I guess?

50 entries, 6 goals, but nup, if we only kicked straight for a spectacular 14.2, we would’ve belted them by 1 point.

That’s the logic.

I think a lot of people were waiting for a change. But it hasn’t happened

Goodwin’s Coaching was perfectly suited to Burgess’s Training methods, we would wear teams down in the 2nd half, if Burgess had stayed another 2 years i think we would have taken a 14th Cup.

But sadly he had to go home.

I also think Simon only knows one way to Coach…Learnings have not progressed for a long time…

The main culprits are Viney, Oliver and to a lesser extent Tracc. They constantly burn team mates in better positions forward and on the inside. The fact we look like rubbish but yet are getting ample inside 50’s for an average 10% success rate indicates there is a solution to get us competitive again. I can’t believe the coach has tolerated this for so long. Viney, Oliver and Gawn should be drilled to handball at all costs and only kick as a last resort. Of course that means you need a system that ensures there are always receivers on the outside but that seems to be beyond us.

I appreciate the examples shown appear damning but much of the yelling ironically is coming from the same people who yell ‘just kick the thing’.

Glass half empty in me says the fact we’re still using it like this after years of being publically criticised for it suggests we have no hope in changing our ways.

Glass half full in me says once we get back some of our better users (McVee, Windsor with more time, Lindsay) each of those examples could be different in future rounds.

The fact that a teenager can spot the obvious flaws in our ball movement and f50 connection and we haven’t done anything in 5 years about it is so depressing.

But the FD are not completely dumb. I think they know our midfielders lack the skill and awareness to do so otherwise. Week after week after week we see the same stuff from them. It beggars belief.

Literally no one is saying kick the thing to an outnumbered contest

I agree about burgess he was a bigger loss than we think.

Max is a liability at centre bounces now he unfortunately cannot jump and just trys to body his opponent and opposition sides have worked that out, and I will say it again we have a one paced lack of skills midfield and that's being found out against sides that will transition the ball with pace.

Some serious questions need to be asked: can you continue to play Viney in the midfield? How does one change Oliver's role because all he is doing is chasing stops, giving him a hard tag, and he cannot cope? The next 4 games might dictate what direction the club takes.

I fully agree with both halves of that glass. We’re obviously winning enough ball to get it inside 50, we just butcher it or continuously burn better options. Our forwards are also in terrible form obvs. So that doesn’t help. But we really don’t (and haven’t for years) maximise their chances of getting a clean grab either.

And I ask this genuinely, does Goodwin look like he’s tried to address the F50 connection problems to you?

At least all the examples led to stoppages. Now show the ones where the ball flings down the other end at warp speed.

PS I hope by watching this video I can help him buy some sort of TV unit to hide those cords.

I think this is why we've recruited better ball winners who can play in the midfield. I remember when we drafted Windsor and Kolt and people were dirty we didn't go for forwards. After recruiting HL and XL it definitely seems like we're planning for the future with different players in the middle.

See Fev even shows how easy it is.

The coach or are our players not looking inboard and making an easy pass to a player making space to open up the game, selfish, dumb football. Not rewarding a teammate’s efforts or not trusting their ability to make the kick.

All these examples weren't even about the ball use but the decision making.

I think Viney has to go as a mainstay of the midfield. He has been a great warrior for us but the game has evolved and he hasn’t, either because he can’t or he won’t. I find it difficult to understand how a footballer at the elite level hasn’t got the peripheral vision and poise to pick out targets around them. I know not every mid can have the vision of a Pendlebury but surely you can try. And that’s the worry for me, that Viney doesn’t even try and fail but continues to just blindly throw it on his left boot to nobody in particular. It’s been an issue for some time. I still have flashbacks of that last dumped kick against Carlton with 30 seconds to go, straight to Walsh? while Tracc was running loose on his inside calling for the handball and us going out in straight sets in 2023.

Can he play the defensive small forward role with brief stints on the ball? I believe he deserves the chance.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
