We picked up May, Lever, Hibberd, Langdon and Brown and won a flag. We then gave long contracts to absolute stars of the game in Petracca and Oliver along with Brayshaw. We then kept our high picks and drafted JVR, Windsor, Tholstrup, Langford and Lindsay. We recruited some cheap stop gaps along the way. Our recruiting has been excellent and can people tell me who we should have recruited that was available and would have led to the bank of young talent we now have. You can’t have both. Big stars cost big money and high picks to recruit. Had we gone that way they’d be no young talent and would we be better off??? Injuries cost us the 23 flag, we were Cherry ripe prior to Petty going down followed by Melksham and then Gus. It wasn’t drafting that cost us. You can’t have it all.

If the hawks are going for Oscar Allen, I’d imagine his asking price would be fairly hefty. Lots of hawks players prices would be rising too. Cant see them re-signing all of their current players within their salary cap either this year or next if Allen goes there. Could be a good time to target one.

Lloyd Meek contract ends 2025. 26 yo.

Serong 2025. 22yo.

Calsher Dear 2025. 19 yo.

Dylan Moore 2026. 25yo.

Jai Newcombe 2026. 23yo.

Josh Weddle 2026. 20yo.

Mitch Lewis 2026. 26yo.

Nick Watson 2026. 20yo.

Unless some of them take unders, Hawks may not be able to match what they would all ask for, especially if they do take Allen. I think that’s 8 of their starting 22.

Mitch Lewis is probably the riskiest, only 70 games (same average of 10 as Mcadams) since starting in 2018 but averages 1.79 goals a game… Allen is averaging 13 games a season but a worse goal average of 1.48. Massive risk paying both of these guys big bucks for the potential of both of them playing a low amount of games respectively.

So I recommend hawks keep Lewis AND recruit Allen and giving them massive contracts.

We already tried to get Lewis, he said no. That was prior to knee injury. No thanks, we don't need another lumbering tall forward. We need agility forward of centre.

What you say is all true at the time. But we didn't know that some of the players became complacent and were up-to-no-good.

In hindsight can you imagine what we would have got if we traded out Oliver end of 2022?. It would have taken an absolute Nostradamus style prediction to see how 2023 would play out but what if we didn't resign Gus on a mega multi-year contract?

We would have got a minimum 2 high end picks for Oliver and could have significant $$$ to chase other players in '24 or '25.

We probably should have traded Petty to Adelaide with the 2 picks. That is where i think Tim has stuffed up. The other stuff I mentioned above, there is no way any sane person would have done it.

Trading Petty, no one bar Kane Cornes says we were offered a top 10 pick from Adelaide. At the time he was a top line defender who we were thinking could be moulded into a forward. We have a dearth of quality talls and he’s young and a quality tall. We need him to stay on.

That makes them more impressive. They've unearthed some absolute gems who all play a role in their side and they get the best out of. On paper their side looks middle of the road but they look destined for a top 4 spot.

Was responding to the second part of your post, specifically about their list management but you knew that. They've already beaten one of last years grand finalists and two other finalists from last year including one of the flag favourites. They're going okay.

Mitchell as coach is a massive attraction for players as is the ability to be attacking and play with flair. Hope they have a good salary cap manager

Pies were into Lever and the Hawks who were still bottoming out had a real crack at May who they thought they may (pardon the pun) get

I remember when Jordan Lewis came to the club. It was the first sign that we had become, or could become, a destination. Followed by Langdon, May, Lever and Hibberd.

Sadly we're no longer a desination club. It could be hard to attract top established players other than by paying massive overs.

Oscar Allen ... injury prone. Hmm, I wonder how Kelvin Templeton's doing these days.
