I agree.

But if the decision is to move him on then it's unlikely to get better than this.

The decision is to move him on 'for the right price'. We're not going to do it just to help out Adelaide.

It's not always about 100% fair value trades though.

Most are (Understandably) looking at this in isolation and getting a like for like trade. From all accounts the guy has reportedly wanted to leave for 2 years now. In a list that is pivoting with a new coach do we really want to keep someone that doesn't want to be there?

I know it's not perfect but turning 30 next year after a serious injury it's unlikely the stock is going up. At very least 14 and an F1 isn't a bad start, play GC off them and try to get a little more of course but top 5 picks are a dream.

If Petracca wants to leave, then we should stipulate to his management what are our minimum requirements. We then let his management do the negotiating with other clubs. If they can't meet our requirements, we hold him to his contract.

At least we save face with Trac, because we value him more than his suitors. Under no circumstances should we let him go to "the best offer".

The current reports is that he's happy to stay if a trade can't be worked out. New coach and change throughout the club. Not impossible to sell it to him. He was happy to sign the long term contract and he's a professional. That several clubs are now coming for him the moment this got raised again shows that there's a pretty decent market for him.

Well if he's happy to stay then that is still the best option right now.

Ben King?

Petracca rang me and said some obscure message, for me to pass on to the media. The words I picked up were:

mano

spento

Esso

Here's an estimate of the Suns Academy selections requirements this year with the new draft points scheme.

Here's the new draft points scheme (scroll to the bottom):
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1223455/the-draft-change-adding-another-element-to-upcoming-trade-frenzy

Here's Cal Twomey's September Draft Ranking that came out today, it's a ranking not a Phantom draft but I think it's the best guide we have on their players:
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1427257/cal-twomeys-phantom-form-guide-top-draft-prospects-september-ranking

2 - Zeke Uwland = 2481
4 - Dylan Patterson = 1962
26 - Beau Addinsall = 561
Total = 5004 with 10% discount 4504 points

Gold Coast's current Draft hand:
https://www.draftguru.com.au/years/2025/provisional-draft-order/final-before-draft

6 = 1659
13 = 1080
16 = 924
31 = 429
Total = 4092 points

Currently GC are short 412 points for their Academy players, that's equivalent to pick 31.

They really need to retain pick 6 or get greater pick value from trading it. They can get more points from trading Flanders to make up the deficit. People think they are the ideal trading partner for Petracca but that's simply not true, they're short of points.

IMHO Adelaide are a much better trading partner in a 3-way with GC, as suggested by @GS_1905 :

MFC - Out: Petracca + 23, In: 6 + Flanders
Adelaide - Out: 14 + 41 + F1st, In: Petracca
GC - Out: 6 + Flanders (1659pts), In: 14 + 23 + 41 + F1st (1915pts)

That gives GC very close to enough points to cover their Academy players with a very small 2026 deficit (all they need is for Uwland or Patterson to be bid a pick later and they're fine) and Adelaide's F1st for Flanders. I think the other two deals for MFC and Adelaide are pretty fair, I know some won't agree.

Gold Coast will trade Fiorini and Rosas, maybe Budarick as well, so will have extra points from those trades, which then might change what they are prepared to give/take back.

That's why I reckon he'll end up staying

Unless the GC come to the party (or Hawthorn) GC has pick 6 and the Hawks pick 8

And more picks and/or players on top of that

My preference would be to win on any sort of deal as I'd much prefer that he stays

Without Petracca we could have a poor W/L record next year ... as it stands, we need to somehow strengthen the list as well as keeping Petracca

You make some good points layz but we need to keep our head above water next season (W/L) Anything less than 10 wins could spell doom & gloom

As it stands, even with Petracca & Oliver firing, we might only be a 12 win team. King will need at least a year to sort the list out (and the game plan)

I'm not suggesting Flanders is a replacement for Petracca but he has some decent numbers and is more outside than Petracca which is not a negative with our set-up

And if he wants to tear up and renegotiate his salary with new club to meet our requirements then we would support that too.

I'd rather keep for another year. However if it got to the point where he was demanding to leave then you have to ask what is it worth keeping someone who isn't 100% invested? It's not something we'd know and it can't be measured like trades and picks can and that's why 4 people instantly dismissed what I originally said within minutes.

It sounds easy to hold someone to their contract but morale of the list should be taken into account too. Otherwise we'll just have some highly paid mercenaries running around again.

Sometimes in life, you have to put a line in the sand.

Actually agreed with Buckley on the subject the other day when it was about Essendon as well as ourselves.

Unless there is someone at the pointy end of the draft that we absolutely covet and are 100% sure we will get with a specific pick then it’s probably better he stays.

Yes, fair comment

If it gets to that point, we might have to bite the bullet

But from what we're hearing, if a suitable trade can't be arranged, he's prepared (happy?) to stay

So the disruption may not be major

Instead of free agency being a major factor, contracted players asking for trades has become the norm

Business as usual (so to speak)

That is the sort of deal that our Bowens Hardware air conditioning and climate electrician would go for..... A BIG NOOOOOO!

Disagree.

If the player wants out again then cut the trade and move on.

Definitely seems like DL is separated from the rest of the world today! Understandable that fans are emotionally connected..

I would.

14 is really 20ish in a weak draft and they wont finish low net year so another pick 14-20ish.

No where good enough, Would take a pick 5 and another around 14 for me to look at it and then i'd still say no.

I'll have what you're smoking.

You're in lalaland if you think we get pick 5 for Petracca...

That's all well and good, but we haven't been able to attract a player of quality since May. Despite winning the flag and being in a premiership window, we haven't been a destination club. And once Trac leaves, most would see us as being in a rebuild and even less of a destination club.

Obviously it’s not a guarantee but if we can nail a couple more draft picks this year and get the development of Langford, Lindsay, Windsor, Tholstrup right suddenly it’s not looking a dive right to the bottom rebuild. Not suggesting we’ll nab a Lever or May any time soon but might be able to grab a Hibberd/Melksham type to start pushing things forward.

It's also rich and surprising to see so many people rejecting two first round picks out of hand. Think the MFC goggles on.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #42 Aidan Johnson

    The VFL premiership player was recruited from Werribee to alleviate Melbourne’s forward line woes and give a chop out in the ruck, but he managed only five senior matches in his first season at the club. At times, he was a dominant force at VFL level.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #44 Luker Kentfield

    An exciting young key forward, Kentfield was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft but has yet to make his AFL debut. He was sidelined by a severe bout of pneumonia over the summer, which consequently limited his pre-season. Upon his return a month into the season, he commenced in defence but ultimately impressed with his progress at Casey, particularly in the latter part of the season as a strong marking goal kicking forward.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

    Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

    Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

    Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.
