They need to come out breathing fire against the Suns.

I dunno.  Suns are very familiar with fire.

Anyone know if Windsor will get up for this weekend?

I hope so. Sleeping the whole weekend can really ruin your week.

Rip Van Windsor?

We need to play Fritz as a deep forward that is what he is first, second and last. If his form does not improve there against GCS then it is Casey for me. It is hard to see any replacement giving us less IMO. It's time to stop gifting him games.

Been saying this since last season

Cannot justify 4 or 5 touches and no involvement

Whilst there is no excusing Fritsch’s lack of defensive efforts, I can’t help but think if he played for the Hawks, Pies, GWS etc he would be on the end of great delivery in space or in one v ones.

Im sure someone is going to be if not already talking to him. Lloyd last night said he would have him at Essendon in a heartbeat

It's more about taking an underperforming player and setting standards for the rest of the list.

I agree that an underperforming player should be dropped but how do we set the criteria and where do we draw the line? In addition to Fritsch being poor defensively we have many players struggling with basic disposal. End of the day all of these issues fall in Goodwins lap as he is head coach, I think we can agree that none of these problems are new.

can see this being a ben brown-alike situation, where a much-loved / much-criticised player goes to a second club and goes to be an integral part of a premiership as a key goalkicking contributor

The calls to drop Fritsch amuse me. Like it's going to make any difference if we're kicking high up-and-unders to the top of Fullarton's head instead of Fritsch.

Fritsch is a player that thrives on being isolated deep and sharking the ball off a spoil in space. Our appalling forward structure and entries absolutely kill him.

I think because he has been poor for 10-15 games in a row.

I'd like to see VanRooyen not worry about jostling with his opponent in a lead up to a marking contest. I find him always trying to keep the backman at his side with one arm and then trying to take a mark at the last minute. He always finds himself caught under the ball whilst fending off his opponent.  Just lead and take a strong contested mark, leave the interference for the ump to decide.

He doesn’t just not tackle, he doesn’t get any body contact or apply pressure, the GWS, Pies and Hawthorn forward lines all rely on pressure acts and winning the ground ball game.
Greene, Daniels and Jones

Schulz, Hill and Mcreery

Watson, Moore, Hardwick and Ginnivan

Fritsch wouldn’t last with his work ethic

Fritsch laid 3 tackles against GWS which was more some Melbourne players with midfield time. I do acknowledge that he has been poor defensively for a while now. You responded to my comment that “if he was in those fwd lines there wouldn’t be a need for many 2nd or 3rd efforts” as he’d be lining up for set shots. Fritsch ranks 2nd amongst the fwds you have listed behind only behind Greene. How do we know Fritsch wouldn’t change under a new coach, I think you’d find if he was open to a trade a lot of clubs would be wanting his signature.

INJURY UPDATE:

According to club site:

May - possible to return this week

Lever - questionable after the bad ankle roll. Has to pass a fitness test later this week. Concern with the short turnaround.

Melksham - possible to return if he gets through full training this week OK.

Windsor - still another week away. Round 4 return they think

Jefferson - A fracture in the hand. 1-2 weeks

Hore - Reinjured the calf in last qtr for Casey but no timeline. Bummer

I just want the team who are picked to turn up for 4 quarters and play like their season is on the line.  Please help Max onfield, and please can Viney play in the 50 so we don't have continuous bombing to JVR.

100% agreement.

Just 12 on the injury list.

3 of them are tests but [censored] me, any chance of having a good amount of players available?

We are missing guys like May, Windsor, McVee so much

Agree. It’s getting to the point where I couldn’t care less about his defensive output. Deliver the ball to his properly , let him kick goals to win games.

That would be more of a glute issue wouldn't it?

And Pickett.

All things being equal they should smash us but it's not equal, we've just been embarrassed by Norf we should be breathing fire against them this is our grand final. Lose this and it's season over. I expect us to win. That doesn't change my opinion on Chaplin and Goodwin because I still don't think we will make finals we will have to get on a roll for me to think we will make finals. I think a young side like Gold Coast are usually flakey when it comes to such pressure.

A small part of me wishes this game was at Marvel…………..just to annoy Hardwick.

Our really good Marvel record had gone to [censored]. We used to be unstoppable there when Goodwin took over, now our last two games there we've been beaten by 10 goals+

The fact that this is at the MCG is the only reason why I think we can win.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
