Feel like Hawthorn got a reprieve there with the change of weather.

If a team works hard defensively and earns a turnover, Hawthorn can be exposed on the rebound if you go hard right away.

Nick Blakey telling the story with 6 intercepts and almost 700m gained at 3/4 time, and a lot of both those stats were built after the Swans began to get their harassment act together.

A recruiter (might have been ours) saw him play and reported that "This kid is a wizard".  The name stuck.

good to know

I might be getting old (true) but I can’t remember him referred as such in his first AFL season

If he was, I would think that is premature and I would not have been a fan of that. Let kids establish themselves first i reckon

So we've got a Wizard and a Lizard playing tonight and more than one King running around.

All we need now is a Gizzard to get the band back together again.

This is why opening round  should be in Melbourne. No rain.

Or they could hold it in Geelong. No Collingwood.

Have to be the maggots worst performance of the year.

You're telling me!  Was watching the game and enjoying the new dimension of rain before it fi ally clicked that I live down the road from the SCG and I rushed off to collect my newly wet washing 😅

Ugh I just remembered why I don’t like the NON-MFC threads. I mean, I do like them, I very much like them, but I can’t stand the “I hope the MFC are watching/learning from this!” finger-wagging type of comments. What part of NON do folks not understand? Personally I like watching matches that don’t involve us coz it’s nice to breathe during a game 😅

Anyways, end of rant. Thanks for listening (even though you had no choice 🤭)

It has always been so difficult to get a clear read on the quality of football at the postage stamp that is the SCG. The Swans v Hawks game has been quick and intense with lots of pressure plays, but little of the game style transfers to most other grounds. Both teams look OK, and it looks like the old fashioned "utility" player has had a field day.

Geez the hawks have got some cheap frees tonight.

Having said that Swans will struggle this year.

Hey GW, I haven’t noticed many finger wagging type posts. I personally think it’s been ok.

There was a crazy stat on AFL360 that every team that has been beaten by more than 6 goals in a GF has done poorly the next year. Not one had won a final the next year and about half had missed finals completely!

crazy!

Must say I've been happy with the non colour clash of jumpers on TV but that chocolate hawthorn jumper...

Even an orange V might have helped save it fashion wise

I obviously have no bias either way, but i thought the umps were pretty good tonight, after a jumpy first quarter

They’re there. I didn’t wanna quote anyone coz I’m so not up for a bunfight (whatever that is). Granted, there’s not as many as usual but they’ll come as the weeks go by. As sure as the sun rises in the east etc. they’ll come. ☹️

edit: I just dictionary.com-ed Bunfight. I prefer its synonyms: free-for-all and rough-and-tumble. They almost sound like fun 🤩

Barrass will be a good pick up for the hawks

Very good. It enables Sicily to go forward, and that should have alarm bells ringing across the AFL.

Saddest chairing-off ever. EVER.

He’ll be AA FB if he plays every game. Solid player. That Hawthorn backline reminds me when we picked up May and Lever.

Neither of these forward lines are drastically better or worse than ours. Just goes to show it’s not as  important to have superstars in your forward line.

Disagree. Both teams have some pretty handy players in their forward lines.

PUCE

That’s the other colour!

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.

It's Game Day and the Demons are back on the road again and this may be the last roll of the dice to get their 2025 season back on track as they take on the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.
