Kentfield will not play for quite a while and certainly not at AFL level this year.

Take the pressure off him and let him train and be with the boys, knowing while he is not ready, he isn’t keeping another player off the list.

When ready, he can play at Casey or a lower competition, for the few games left in the season.

I think we will lose Jai in the msd, if we don’t take him now.

Do you actually know Kentfields progression? I find it ridiculous that people are talking about putting someone on an inactive list when you actually have no insights as to when he will be back.  You don’t put someone on based on the face you think they will play reserves

    Yes, or a proper reserves / second tier with deeper squads, or if not a practice squad concept with an inactive list (like NFL). 

    Think of WCE last year for example. Not a fun environment to train in when you’re struggling to get 24 together

    Agreed.

    Not sure on the exact amount.

    But at least 5 or 6 extra list spots for each AFL team should be enough to cover a dearth of players that succumb to injuries?

    Bring back each VFL side having a reserves side too.

    The AFL with it's enormous profits should be putting more money into the secondary competitions like the VFL as well as grassroots football regardless.

    I maintain that there’s absolutely no need to have deadlines for replacing injured players, particularly before the season has even started. If we lose another player next week we’ll be 2 down before round 1. This is supposed to be the premier comp in the land. Time for change

    Kentfield told GW he would be out for a long time. He is getting over a potential life threatening illness. Is that a good enough insight, straight from the horses mouth.

    I am unsure if he will play Reserves this year, but I know he won’t play AFL this year.

    It would have taken the pressure off him too, which would help him.

    We now have a few out for the year and several on long term injuries. 

    I would definitely ask the AFL to replace AMW.

    No offence to the kid but what’s his chance of ever playing an AFL game? It’s a brutal profession and sometimes I think we aren’t brutal enough but that’s a hunch without strong factual evidence.

    That is going too far, because we simply don’t know.

    He may develop or he may not, but he hasn’t had the chance to do that yet.

    He deserves his chance and he will get it and good luck to him.

    Definitely with you for asking for a replacement for AMW.

    I think this will be ticked off, if I remember correctly I think there were a couple of instances last year

    The only reason we have a small chance of potentially being granted exemption to get a replacement player in is because Carlton are trying to do the same. If it was just us, no chance but them? They usually get their way.

    I don’t think so either but the way 14 other teams had the chance to sign players before their match simulations whereas Carlton, St Kilda, Melbourne and North didn’t makes at the very least an argument/case for a player to be signed. Because it’s not *fair* that those clubs could play their practice matches.

    It's an interesting one, I know there have been a few injuries so we'll see what happens. 

    Whilst we would benefit if they did extend this year (which i'm doubtul) it would make me feel a little annoyed especially if you compare this year to last year

    Carlton lose Pick 3, a raw skinny kid and might be able tor replace him compared to us last year we lost Gus a 150+ game premiership player and couldn't do anything until midseason.  Guess we don't have big boy bargaining power though.

    The AFL website says that extensions (to SSP signings) have been made in the past to allow a club to watch a potential recruit run around 'in competition'. 

    Had we played our match a few days earlier, we'd have access to another SSP signing. Same for the Blues.

    An aside: handy having the Blues in our corner.

    As the saying goes "the squeaky wheel gets the grease".

    If both Carlton and Melbourne complain about their circumstances regarding the SSP period then the AFL might be magnanimous and extend it for another week or two.

    I think it's fair to do this.

    While I understand it may stuff up teams in the second tier competitions (VFL, SANFL, WAFL etc) there are always young blokes out there who would love a chance to play footy at a higher level.

    Let's hope the AFL sees sense to make a change.

    Poor Andy 😢 let’s hope common sense prevails and us and Carlton can receive an exemption to the current SSP deadline 

    If that’s the case, I wonder if it’s as simple as adding Culley to the list? He’s too good to not be on an AFL list and has some upside at only 21(?) years old

    We are talking about a 3-4 day extension and given a big club is in the same boat and the situation is patently and obviously unequal, I think we are a real chance to grab a replacement.

    As I said in an earlier post, don’t ask don’t get.

    Jay Clark is now reporting that the AFL will open up the SSP period for this week so Melbourne and Carlton can sign replacement players.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder.       What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
