I think all were moved on rather than โ€˜losingโ€™ them.

When did anyone argue otherwise?

I just responded to a post asking which players have left while under contract.

Jesse Hogan

Brodie Grundy

Jack Watts

Sam Weidemanย

ANB

James Harmesย

Dom Tyson

Brayden Pruess

We also attempted to trade both Tom McDonald and ANB at the end of 2020.

Now most of them all had different situations going on and were traded for different but regardless, they were still contracted and we still demonstrated that we are willing to trade players whilst under contract.

On Kozzie, he is contracted to 2027. Unless there is some family sensitivity involved similar to ANB then he stays. If he is wanting to go to Freo purely to play with a bunch of mates then that's a [censored] excuse and should be held until his contract finishes.

I'm not entirely sure if this is true.

Probably right dazzle but canโ€™t think of any that were under contract and we wanted to keep,(ANB maybe) Jackson but out of contract.

Fair enough. I think the comment was more to holding players to contracts when they are required, as opposed to never trading contracted players.ย

Thanks for your response, @dazzledavey36.

That's more names than I realised, but Nibbler would be the only one we didn't want to lose at the time.

I'm sure we'd all love to have Hogan back playing for us now,ย  but it was the correct move then.

I don't think a lot of people wanted to lose Hogan. Or Harmes.ย ย

Maybe not at the time, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say.

Hogan went to Freo and stunk it up (we got a Premiership fullback) while Harmes is fringe/depth only.

I'd love to have Hoges back right now.ย  I've always had high regard for him.ย  I'm pleased things are working out well for him at the moment.

I loved Hoges, still do.ย

We had the opportunity to take him back at the end of 2020 and set up a meeting him and his manager. After the meeting said thanks but no thanks and then that's when we went after Ben Brown.

I love BB and will be thankful for his contribution during the premiership year, but a part of me thinks imagine the combination of JVR and Hogan right about now...

That's a real shame if we passed on him at the time. But perhaps it was best for Hogan to get completely out of the footy bubble and enjoy life as a relative nobody in Sydney.

Would have been magnificent to get him back and in the form he currently is. I'd take him over Ben Brown any day of the week and I'm surprised we passed if we had the opportunity to take him.

Sorry, we turned down Hoges or the other way around?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But did anyone know Brown would be a lost (injured) cause a couple of years later, or that a player that didn't quite make it went even worse at a second club but somehow would then improve miles at a 3rd club? Surely such a turnaround is very rare.

Keep in mind he was an absolute mess off-field at the time and couldnโ€™t get his body right, so you can see the clubโ€™s point of view. Easy in hindsight, but heโ€™s exactly the player we lack at the moment.

Thatโ€™s what you took from that?

Itโ€™s arguably (maybe inarguably) the most open/candid interview heโ€™s ever given. Which may not be saying much given heโ€™s renowned for being a deadpan closed book, but makes the interview insightful all the same.

An incredibly insightful interview, and we are all incredibly better of for it.. Incredibly!?

we elected to pursue ben brown over him; worked out well, what with the premiership and all

the story that has been told is that there were certain mandates that the club would have required him to adhere to and he was not comfortable in doing so

And so other cฤบubs weren't putting the same mandates then? Or. Were sugar coating requirements???

We informed Hogan's management of our desire not to go ahead.

Brown came to the club with ongoing knee issues as well.

I love Brown but itโ€™s a real sliding doors moment in hindsightย

Although who knows if Hogan could have had the same impact as Brown in the last third of 2021 - he was absolutely pivotal to us winning the flagย

He was, but Hogan was also making good impact for GWS in the back half of that year and around finals.

Ita sliding doors for sure but the team was absolutely humming from all lines that I think either player would have done well regardless.

I always felt we'd get first option on him after the amicable way that he left us so that would make sense. Back in 2020 I can see why they went for Brown but there was a bit of buyer beware with both.

Sliding doors moment:

We choose Hogan oven BBB at the end of 2020.

We miss Brownโ€™s impact in late 2021 and either lose the GF in Perth or donโ€™t make it at all.

We win the flag at the G in 2023 over Collingwood or Brisbane with a functional forward line, namely a reliable ย J Hogan nailing the shots we collectively blew in both finals. We had most of the ingredients in 2023, but we just needed to duck down to Coles or Woolies to grab some icing on the cake in Hogan.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: โ€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?โ€ Moments later, as Carltonโ€™s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demonsโ€™ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.ย
