I agree I believe we have the cattle to finish top 4, again much will depend on luck with injuries, how many and who to but the most important factor to me will be our game plan on game day and under pressure.

We are currently training in the sims with an emphasis on rapid and unpredictable ball movement connecting to players who are in space and on the move. I love it, it looks great and given the high speed, high risk ball movement we saw from the Lions in the finals this year, it is the only way to go. But will we play as we train when opposition pressure is applied and the season drags on? I have watched training in recent years and the sims have always featured quick ball movement but come game day we often revert to the predictable kick the ball long down the line stuff.

Correct. And this is where Simon Goodwin and the rest of the coaches will need to earn their keep. They need to be reinforcing that they want players to continue to take risks and if errors happen no problem, move on and keep having a crack. I like Goodwin as a coach and man manager, but I do wonder if his defence first mindset does rub off on the players sometimes.

I'm sorry but unless you're talking about Casey, there is absolutely no way goody would be publicly talking about McAdam being picked in round 1.

I assume he said "he'll be right to go round 1" (meaning available for selection, which would indeed be a good achievement) and it's being embellished.

Positivity is great but when it crosses the line into fantasy it diminishes all the other observations....

Our backline will be the best in the comp and keep sides to minimal scores.  Our midfield/ruck should be as good as any and have depth.  We need to consistently kick 15 goals a game.  That's 330 for the season.  Picket and Fritsch will kick 80 to 90 of those.   Where do the track watchers see the rest (240) coming from?  Who kicks how many?  If someone else kicks 70 then we are half way there.

Your stakes and expectations are way too high.

It's physically impossible to back this up week in week out and I would be blatantly surprised if a club has ever done this in the last decade by kicking 15 goals per match, every week.

Our forward line stocks is still young and developing. With Pickett playing more midfield next year, we still lack a genuine small with x factor and ability to be a match winner.

Looking at Brisbane's smalls for instances, Lohmann (36 goals), Ah Chee (27 goals), Cameron (44 goals) Rayner (31 goals) Bailey (22 goals)

Amazing spread of goalkickers just from their small alone and not counting their talls.

Can't rely on the same usual suspects such as Pickett and Fritsch to kick all our goals week in, week out.

Unfortunately the trade and draft period didn't really give us any real good options to chase another genuine classy small forward so we're going to have to pull a few surprises this year.

I share (a small amount of) what I’m told. I don’t fabricate anything… ever. I don’t embellish anything… ever. Some players and staff read Demonland (that’s a fact) so I’d be an !d!ot to post “fantasy” right? I’ve been told negative things too but I choose not to share such.

Please understand that it’s comments like yours above that will drive people like me away. I’m not gonna deal with this every single [censored] week. You think I lie and/or embellish? Fine, that’s your belief (even though it’s inaccurate). But is it necessary to post these accusations? What have you achieved by doing so?

I can’t report your post since you haven’t broken any DL rules (being a jerk doesn’t constitute a breach) but honestly, read the [censored] room.

That is an impressive list of smalls. I think Kozzy will still spend some time forward, but increasing his midfield time will be good for the side overall. If we were to do a man by man comparison I think it might be something like this:

- Lohmann > Chandler

- Ah Chee > Fritsch

- Cameron > Kozzy

- Rayner > Trac

- Bailey > Tholstrup

The question is can we get a similar output from those 5 as the lions got from theirs…

Then the other key area is Daniher 58 goals and Hipwood 33. Can JVR and Turner also try replicate this to some extent. Also shows how big a hole the Lions have to fill now with Daniher retiring. Morris was very good, but as third tall so it will be tougher playing the 2nd tall essentially.

Yep, me too. I'm another with big wraps on Disco, and I think if he stays fit, he'll kick 35+ goals. Bookmark it.

We’re going to need some mix of Chandler, Kolt, Spargo etc to kick 20+ each next year to be a genuine flag chance

Fritsch and Kozzie have been our only consistent mid/small forward goal kickers the past few years, and when they’re not kicking bags we generally struggle to score

Trac could help a lot in this regard if he spends more time forward but it seems like he’s been training exclusively as a mid so far this offseason, and we’re still pretty reliant on him in this position

Spargo has never kicked over 20 goals in his career.

Can't see him doing it after having a year off. In fact I don't see him currently in our best 22 as we stand to be honest.

Kolt on the other hand I could absolutely see doing.

GW can I respectfully ask that you simply ignore any such comments.

Let them through to the keeper.

Please.

I'd ask the same questions you as you do above - is it necessary to respond to these accusations? What have you achieved by doing so?

Responding simply invites a rebuttal from that poster, other posters and almost always another round of circular posts of the sort that simply clogs up threads, not to mention inevitably become more personal and unpleasant.

It's tiresome - and unnecessary.

There is no need to defend yourself. People wil believe what they want to believe.

Lean into the fact that the vast majority of posters really enjoy your posts, take you at your word and enjoy the banter with players and staff you choose to relay.

The haters are always going to hate.

Of course you are free to post and respond however you want.

But by ignoring the haters you take away their the power  which is their ability to upset you.

And we will have less threads getting derailed.

You jest, but in terms of availability, as things stand now, we’ll be spoilt for choice. Even the players in “rehab” - and I use that term for want of a better one - no one’s walking around on one leg.

Training this off-season is very different. Sunday is the only full day they are free from any type of training. The conditioning program is different and there’s a more conservative approach to deeming when a player is fully ready to go. There’s also a lot more programming for the individual. It’s not one size fits all.

Yesterday I was told by the admin. of a certain (wonderful) Dees fan forum 😉 that I say this every year. And I guess I do. But this year stands out. So many procedures etc. have changed, new personnel, a new mindset, a newfound sense of pride and unity and a hunger not seen for years; the transformation is astounding.

Have faith and get excited y’all. ❤️💙

I do jest, and there is never a happier time than in pre-season where most are healthy.

I am forever faithful, I just know there are going to be a disappointed few. Especially if we start well.

Nothing I said was insulting and I am not a 'hater'.

I value the contributions GW makes and the forum is richer for her involvement given her commitment to sharing the information she does have. Beyond that, I have also said previously that people like her are very important to the club.

That does not mean I need to believe every word or that I can't call what I think is nonsense out when I read it. I won't apologise for this. Seems I've hit a sensitive spot and I'm not across what some other poster has said...But whatever Goody said about Shane, I would probably have interpreted it differently to how she has. Whatever. It doesn't matter.

She seems to think this is a noticeboard, or a bulletin, or an email newsletter where the dialogue is one way. It's a forum.

People said Chris Judd was coming here years ago and got smashed for it. Who cares. It's the internet. I've been smashed plenty of times for my views - including by those now on their high horse in this thread - who preach diversity of thought but clearly don't appreciate it.

I'm not driving anyone away - plenty like me come here to see both sides of the coin.

Yes average rather than consistently would have been a better word.   I agree you can't kick 15 every week.   Some weeks it will be 10 and others 20.   Thanks for the input.  i agree we'll get across the board other contributors.  I was just hoping the watchers might suggest who the most likely 70 goal other contributor would be.  330 goals is about what you would need to get in the top 8 on last years ladder.

Of course nobody can really predict anything much, but for what it is worth I would hope that JVR if not required to do any ruck work other than deep inside our 50, would contribute maybe 50+ goals, and Disco 40+.

Believe me, I’m trying! I’m trying so hard. Not everyone is blessed with a thick skin. I don’t enjoy being so sensitive; it sucks.

And while I’m not quite at Chris Tavarê levels of leaving, I’m trying to let more go through to the keeper. But even that’s no guarantee I’ll not get out. If I stray from my crease I’ll likely be Alex Carey-ed and even up the non-striker’s end I’ll expect to be mankad-ed. That’s a light-hearted way to describe something that personally is a lifelong struggle.

I’ve put known haters on ignore. This poster’s delivery caught me off guard ☹️

That's great you have been refusing to bite more often CW. Thanks.

And the training threads have been much better for that discipline.

Few of us have thick skins, certainly i don't.

Most people are sensitive to criticism and our honesty being questioned. I certainly am.

So it's not about being less sensitive or 'toughening up'.

It's about not responding and fuelling the angst.

You post lots of interesting snippets of conversations with mfc peeps.

Almost all posters like that content.

For whatever reason some don't, and for a small number of posters it seems it's a trigger.

It really isn't possible on such a forum to stop people posting stuff that might get under someone else's skin - and that’s leaving aside the conversation about whether that is even desirable (ie policing opinion and/or criticism).

Keep up the good work on not biting as often.

Water off a duck's back.

No matter your intention, your post comes across as very disrespectful - essentially calling GW a liar or at best, a fantasizer - when you could have so easily said something like " maybe you have misinterpreted what Goody said - perhaps he meant available round 1 not necessarily playing in the seniors round 1".

You have a right to express your opinion, but you should also have a duty to be respectful when doing so - we're all on the same side.

Top 8 all scored over 2000 points last year. 2100 seems like a reasonable target.

91 points per game, allowing for at least 7 points that’s 14 goals. Probably more like 13.5.

There’s no chance we unearth a 70 goal kicker this year. That’s Coleman winning level.

One of JVR or Disco probably get in position to kick 40 if they play the full year in a deep role. But I suspect we probably try a number of different combinations and structures during the season.

Either of those guys could be the man for the FF role but we probably try both of them taking more time at CHF (as much as it exists these days), as well as Petty at times, as well as AJ and 2 or 3 talls and some Jeffo time too.

Each to their own.

Before his injury he was dropped to the VFL a few times during the 2023 season, so he wasn't really in good form anyhow prior to his injury.

I'd like to see him play some solid VFL form before he's considered at AFL level.

He was probably our best in the 2023 SF loss to Carlton. And was a valuable link up person, his inability to kick over 40m hurts but he is very creative with those kicks inside 50.

For a small forward he simply doesn't score enough for me. His best tally for a year is 18 which is poor for a small forward that's been in the system for 7 years.

I know goals aren't exactly everything but this is my point about sharing the load in terms of scoring avenues. That's why I listed the smalls for Brisbane and their ability to impact the scoreboard and spread the load.

  • CASEY: Northern Bullants

The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons have a golden opportunity to build on last week’s stirring win by toppling Sydney at the MCG. A victory today would keep them firmly in the hunt for a finals spot and help them stay in touch with the pack chasing a place in the Top 8. Can the Dees make it two in a row and bring down the Swans?

Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
