Yes Tommo has signed with North’s VFL side. Which brings up yet another opportunity to remind folks that Casey will be playing North in a practice match following our Seniors’ practice match at Arden St. on Saturday Feb. 22nd, the VFL match to commence at 2pm.

If you’re planning on attending, would be great to stay around for the second match to give our Casey boys some love. ❤️💙

Hi KC

who are the Casey team for these matches? Does it include MFC listed players.

Thanks

On Wednesday, at Gosch's training, a large group of players joined the AFL group before training, for a large photo-op. I wasn't close, but I assume they were Casey-listed (or nominated) players. There were certainly enough of them to field a full side for a practice match. Whether AFL listed players play in these VFL matches might be a function of the AFL games' formats - do they allow 28 (or more) players to rotate? - in which case only those that don't get a run might play VFL (might not be many in our case given the high absentee list recently). I would expect the Casey coach also wants to get a look at his own full squad in action to know who his core group will be.

Paul Amy has updated his article to include additional players signed since it first appeared:-

Riley Bonner

What a boost for the Casey backline. Bonner played 19 AFL games for St Kilda in 2024, taking his tally to 112 in a career that began at Port Adelaide in 2016. "His exceptional kicking ability and football IQ will be invaluable in providing drive off the backline," the Demons said after signing Bonner, who will take up a role in Melbourne's NGA.

Mitch Hardie

Former South Australian Hardie, 27, is a superb addition to the Demons. His efforts for Geelong's VFL team last season were exemplary, winning the best and fairest after averaging 29 disposals per game (he had 20 or more in all 19 of his matches). Unsurprisingly, he was a VFL team-of-the-year pick.

Mitch Kirkwood-Scott

The sweet-kicking defender was part of the 2024 Sandringham Dragons premiership team, having 21 possessions and 10 marks in the grand final. The former Haileybury College captain averaged 16.8 disposals from 13 Talent League appearances.

Another update includes the following -

Jesse Craven, Casey Demons

Craven, from Tooradin-Dalmore, won Gippsland Power's best and fairest last season as a 19-year-old player and also made his VFL debut for the Demons. "He was the first bloke picked in our side last year. Heart and soul, competitive, tough, does everything right," Power talent manager Scotty McDougal told CODE Sports.

Jenson Garnham, Casey Demons

Jenson Garnham has been a prominent goalkicker for Leongatha in the past two seasons, kicking 53 goals and being named at full-forward in the Gippsland league team of the year in 2024 and slotting 52 goals in the premiership year of 2023. He had played with Gippsland Power in 2022. Leongatha coach Trent McMicking said Garnham was an exciting prospect. "I'm not sure where the limit is for him. I don't know how good he can be," he said.

"He attacks the footy hard, he's a really good mark and he's a neat kick for goal. He has a basketball background and he didn't really play much footy until he was 16, 17. He's super-raw but he's got plenty of ability."

Noah Yze, Casey Demons

The son of Richmond coach Adem had two VFL games for Casey last season, as well as 11 for the Oakleigh Chargers in the Coates Talent League. He's a 190cm forward with sharp skills and a team-first approach.

2025 Smithy’s VFL Fixture: Club-by-club

The article provides a club-by-club breakdown of the 2025 Smithy's VFL fixture. This is what is says about Casey -

IMG_8954.thumb.jpeg.8ab76ed69408d7abeb3c02138ebe7e98.jpeg

Last Season: 17th (5-13)
Fixture: NM (h), GC (h), Gee (a), GWS (h), Ric (h), bye, Foo (a), Sou (h), NB (a), Syd (a), Col (a), Ess (h), bye, GC (a), Cob (h), Wer (a), Car (h), San (h) bye, BL (a), Box (h)

Plays Twice: Gold Coast Suns

Doesn’t Play: Frankston, Port Melbourne, Williamstown

Interstate Trips: NSW 1, Queensland 2
AFL double headers: R3 Gee v Cas/Mel (GMHBA); R10 Syd v Cas/Ade (Tram/SCG)
VFLW double headers: R4 v GWS/Col (Casey); R7 v Foo/WB (Whitten); R8 v Sou/Ess (Casey); R9 v NB/Dar (Genis); R12 v Ess/Wil (Casey)

Summary: Two home games to kick things off for the Demons as they aim to bounce back from a tough 2024. They also play four of the first five at Casey Fields due to the unavailability of the Swinburne Centre for the Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond. The fixture is littered with challenges such as three interstate trips, one of which is sandwiched in the middle of a run of three away games in a row. For the first time the traditional King’s Birthday weekend clash with Collingwood is a Magpies’ home game and they won’t see much standalone action, having no dates with the Dolphins, Borough or Seagulls. 2023 premier Gold Coast is expected to bounce back, and the Demons play the Suns twice. Although their last three away games are Suns, Werribee and Brisbane Lions, they have a good chance to finish strongly with four home games in the last six, three of which come against sides who didn’t play finals in 2024). Five single-figure matches and three worth 50+.

Difficulty Score: 502 (10th hardest)

Honestly, the VFL fixture and system in general is one of the more bizarre leagues going on in the country.

Whoever is in charge of this fixture should immediately come to the attention of Elon Musk and his DOGE team. Apart from the fact that it makes no sense to play one team twice and not play against three others once, how is it that Casey plays distant Gold Coast twice but does not play it’s closest opponent and long time rival, Frankston at all. That is sheer madness.

Is there any system to the fixturing that anyone can explain, particularly the bolded aspect?

Serious question.

Three lovely suburban grounds to attend (yes I know about the wind at Willy but seeing ships sail by the outer wing is rather cool not to mention fish and chips on the Esplanade pre-game). Then of course there's the Burra Burger and giant dim sims at Port.

It’s crazy that you would play one side twice when you don’t even play every side… makes zero sense.

Sandy must have slipped through cos we've got them at Casey, not Beach Oval.

With Jai Culley being promoted to the Demons AFL list it will be interesting to see if Casey is able to invite another former AFL player to join the team. However, I am not sure when VFL lists need to be finalised by.

Casey was trialling some of the underage NAB league players from 2024.  Not sure if any will be added or if they go back to suburban clubs or to the Stingrays as overage players.

Casey Demons have made two more signings, bringing in Lachie Bryce from the Box Hill Hawks and Oliver Green from the Sandringham Dragons.

The 191cm Bryce, from Mornington Peninsula power Frankston YCW, made his debut for the Hawks in 2023 but injuries kept him to eight local matches last year.

Small forward and midfielder Green, from Parkdale Vultures, forced his way into the Dragons team for last year’s Coates Talent League finals and was part of the grand final side that pasted Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

Thanks SONS that is further great news, Casey are getting back in the Groove and are treating our VFL side in a more professional manner. Hopefully as a result of our EOS Reviews. Success breeds success and vice versa.😁👍

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
