I think you’ll be VERY surprised with our fwd line strategy in 25’ — it’s going to be completely different and much more modern ergo built to suit Fritta with space, more blocking, maybe some Kansas-city-shuffle type antics and I for one am SUPER excited to see what TC does with our much deeper & higher ceiling fwd line than what most perceive.

I hope you’re right, and look forward to seeing it play it, I posted something in the Gameplan & Tactics thread last night hoping for what you’ve mentioned.

Surely a bit top heavy forward of the ball?  Can't see us playing with all 4 of them in the one side - though given the extended benches ususally used in pre-season matches they should all get some game time.

It's a bit top heavy I'll have to change the team.

I really look forward to your rolling squads Werridee. An emoji just isnt enough sometimes. Thanks.

But Id swap Tholstrup with Langford and Turner with McAdam.

Gawn & Lever would be  fairly handy ins!

I can't see Salem being in our best 23 any longer - injury prone & with the addition of Langford & Lindsay I can't see him playing either half back or on the ball - good depth though!

No mention of Jefferson as a possible in or IC - would like to see how he goes at FF with JVR at CHF although I do like the option of Johnson playing as he can be 2nd ruck - don't want them to ruck JVR at all so only options are play Johnson or play Campbell so for me Johnson on IC makes sense depending on who the opposition is.

I wouldn't forget Spargo (seeing him missed almost all of 2024) - good link player. Also, surely Sparrow, Chandler & Brown are worth considering as possible interchanges?

I tried to leave out who's been injured. Chandler is out for a few weeks and is Tholstrup injured? Play players like Chandler, Gawn, Lever and Petracca against Freo.

I've changed my round 1 team based on training reports

GWS could have a tall forward line that's why I've picked Howes ahead of Bowey. Bowey is too small.

Buckley will get McAdam.

Taylor will get van Rooyen.

Idun will get Fritsch.

Whitfield will get Chandler

Himmelberg will get Johnson

Ash will get Petracca.

Lever will take Riccardi.

May will take Hogan.

McVee will take Stringer.

Salem will take Greene.

Windsor will take Daniels.

Agree with Brayshaw ahead of Febes as he is a premiership player and played and succeeded in more big games perhaps.

Fritta very unlucky and Kossie probably Sub ahead of Flash or Jmac.

Due to Kolt being out for 10 to 12 weeks I've put in a new round 1 side. I'm not sure how long Kentfield is out for so I kept him in the side.

Werridee, Jeffo stared yesterday, and this has come from other reports as well, surely its time to bite the bullet show some faith and get early games into him?? Also Billings was sensational! Mc Adams did little that I could see and Bowser was also very good yesterday! Howes was almost invisible as well yesterday!

I think Billings will get first crack on the wing based on training reports.

I'm counting the McAdams's posts.

I'm not gonna change the team based on 1 match simulation but if Jefferson keeps on improving it will be hard to keep him out of the side.

Billings was useless last year, what has changed? I'd be wary of playing Billings he lets you down.

McAdam gives us a point of difference he can play tall and small you can say the same thing about him as you could about Billings but at least McAdam was injured most of the year Billings had no excuses.

I'm picking Howes on his defensive ability he can play tall and small. Bowey can't play tall. He's good offensively but I'm not sure defensively.

Don’t forget Billings was coming back from two injury riddled seasons, so was probably lacking confidence in his body.  His last three games playing off a wing were actually fairly solid.

He looks super fit now and has done a full preseason, which I’m guessing he hasn’t done for a while.

He looks like he's bulked up in the upper body too.

If Chandler is fit he comes in and replaces Sparrow and Howes becomes the sub, but ATM Langdon and Billings have to play the small forward role.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
