Fitzroy vs South Melbourne

16th sept 1899 at 3.00pm (a good old afternoon  game. No tele in those days.

Junction oval with 4800 attendance.

Roy Boys  won by a point. Keeping swans to 1 goal after 1/4 time.

3 goals 9 lions to 3 goals 8 swans

And the umpire was I kid you not.

I . Crapp. (Ivo was first name)

148 games and 7 grand finals umpired. Could be the razor Ray of his time

It's what the umpires should be named today. I hear them called that often enough at games

He umpired so many games that the public became used to hearing the radio announcers say that the umpire is Crapp.

Could have started off meaning they were held in high esteem.

Not sure how many know that they weren’t the swans at that time…

Bloods I think

Not sure what all that was about but here's the real thing in 1909 (pre 'Talkies')

Does anyone else find it ironic that Sydney & Brisbane are playing in the final and Melbourne get a public holiday for it?

Do they still do the GF parade and if so, will any of the players partake?

And there are any number of Fitzroy/Brisbane and South/ Sydney supporters based in Melbourne

Doesn't necessarily show up in memberships as neither team plays a lot of games in Melbourne (consistently) By the way, they should do

But the Swans & Lions supporters are often out in force when they play at the MCG.  Especially against the Demons

Holding on to a large element of supporters based in Melbourne seems a no-brainer.  It's easy money and keeps everyone happy

Ahh yes the great Ivo Crapp

often got a good laugh at school when looking up footy history

Good call. I was trying to give it a modern context . Bloods up to 1933 when they adopted the swans moniker.

We're at the great lakeside oval from 1873 is. Really old club.

I'm struggling to find any information supporting this claim.

The 1896 Premiership (VFA) was decided by a "Play-off" as Collingwood and South were tied on 58 points each at end of season.

The previous "playoff 'was between Melbourne and Geelong in 1878.

The "Playoff" was played at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground in front od about 12000.

South won the game 6.9 to 5.10 (Only goals were counted towards a win)

Umpire J.J. Trait.

Old Dee attended the match on his Penny Farthing.

Apologies-was searching 1896 for some reason.

I stand corrected.

The VFL started in 1897 after 8 clubs, Swans included, broke from the VFA to form AFL.

The 1899 GF was settled under the old play off process used in the VFA. With the two playoff teams being South and the Roys.

I wasn't referring to VFA.  In any case the post was about specifically South vs Fitzroy last time they met in something approaching a GF- 1899.

My data came from the AFL Tables website that has all match scores from 1897 to last week's semi finals.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
