Saturday 19 September 1964: A crowd of 102,471 gathered at the MCG to witness a thrilling grand final in which Melbourne defeated Collingwood by four points after back pocket player Neil Crompton (#5) pushed forward to kick the winning goal. It was the Demons’ 12th VFL Premiership.

MELBOURNE 2.6.18 5.7.37 7.10.52 8.16.64

COLLINGWOOD 2.5.17 5.9.39 5.11.42 8.12.60

Truly a Grand Old Flag. Denied the filth in dramatic circumstances. Who thought it would be almost a lifetime before the next?

You are a gem WJ. I love what you bring to Demonland with things like this and the Tony Charlton/Norm Smith interview.

I've cancelled all of my pay TV subs and I'm now totally reliant on your contributions to keep me entertained.

Thank you!

P.S. Your written work is good too. 👍

I was there, top deck, front row of the old Northern stand, up against the MCC fence.  TBH all I remember is jumping up and down when the final siren went.

Our last flag on the hallowed turf.

I've said it more times than I can remember but that 2 mins of newsreel footage was played to death by me growing up being the only video evidence of us winning a flag.

Maybe one day AI can re-create a behind the goal video of Crompton kicking the winner!

I was huddled with my Dad, in the backyard in Malvern, listening on the radio with Mum's constant supply of scones, raspberry jam and whipped cream offerings across the afternoon, and many cups of tea. A fond memory, with Mum's soothing, repetitive comment that '...you two should relax, Melbourne will win it - just wait for the replay!'

I was there with two filth supporters. What a relief after Gabbos run. Froggy's goal was the sweetest of all especially as I watched it coming towards me. What joy.

And after we had beaten them by 89 points in the second semi two weeks earlier.

Kept me going for 57 long years.

Rhett Bartlett (son of Kevin) unearthed the full broadcast of the Toby Charlton/Norm Smith interview. He said he understands the full FTA (channel 7/9?) broadcast of quarters 3 and 4 of this GF exist and he has been trying for years to get his hands on it. Would be amazing if that came to light, this footage is great but nowhere near the same as the footage available for the 1961, 1962 and 1965 GFs.

Some of the FTA footage has been shown and is in YouTube (extended highlights are on the MFC history DVD) but it is still just snippets.

I was once told that the (channel 9) videos were once destroyed in an act of petulance when channel 9 lost TV rights.

Two small observations from the footage about kicking.

Amazed to see at one point in the video John Townsend at about CHF going to the city end, wheeling out of a tackle and under pressure doing a drop kick with his left foot to move the ball forward.

And how about Brian Dixon in the lead up to the famous Crompton goal at the end? Collingwood full back kicks off after a behind, goes to a pack and marked by Dixon (well done!). His “give it everything” kick then goes all of 30 metres to a contest where Crompton is still at least 30 metres out when he snaps the winner. Thank heavens for his tish-house kicking skills in that instance!

I paid big bucks to get the Ken Dakin ABC radio commentary and it seems this was a very scrappy game. Barry Bourke takes a match-saving mark on the goal line just before siren. Minutes before he was part of a chain of handballs and passes which got the ball to Hassa. Hassa the misses a sitter but moments later winds up with Dixon, then Crompton, then history.

Fun facts: Ron Barassi kicked 0.4 and Barrie Vagg, 0.5.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
