Adam The God 30,730 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Just now, FreedFromDesire said: I'm the same. I'm not even totally sure why, I guess it's the completely sudden nature of it that's hit hard. I've always liked Sam's work, never met him, but came across in his writing and reporting as someone who loved sport and talking about it. The outpouring from media, footy fans and more seems to display how well thought of he was. I guess all that just makes you want to remember to tell the people you care about what you think of them while you can. Devastated for his family and friends. He knew my sister, who said he was always the nicest guy. Just a real tragedy. 3 2 Quote
Guest Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I never met Sam but he always came across as a sweet and genuine person. I met Jay Clark on a train after our Geelong game and I told him Sam’s my favourite on Midweek Tackle. Jay said, “Yeah everyone loves Sam, he’s a ripping bloke.” This is such a shock. Quote
At Least I Saw a Flag 5,353 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Beyond sad. A young man gone way before his time .... so needless too. An example of how fragile life is. 4 Quote

A great sports writer. Taken way too soon. Gutted to read the news. I opened the thread thinking (maybe hoping) that Sam had made some sort of unrealistic prediction or statement that had caused embarrassment. Sammy was one of the genuine good egg sports journos who really loved his job. Ceaselessly positive and optimistic, he would always engage with sports nuffies like me on Twitter in good spirit and good faith (particularly on draft related chat), happy to exchange ideas and opinions. Thoughts with all that knew and loved him. Such a loss. Gone way too soon, vale Sam Landsberger. 1 3 Quote
jane02 3,795 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I was so sad to hear this. His dad Jacob is a good friend of my husband and is also a lovely man. One of the few honest football journalists IMO. May he RIP. 4 4 Quote
Demon Disciple 12,536 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Just goes to show how precious and fleeting life is, he woke up this morning and now never will again. The finality of it is just so sudden, heartbreaking and hard to comprehend. 4 1 Quote
Red But Mostly Blue 4,632 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 (edited) Terrible, gut-wrenching news. Condolences to Sam's loved ones. So young, carrying out the everyday task of traveling to work - which always brings these things too close to home :-( A reminder that this is, after all, just a game. The (overlong) hoo-ha in the Tracc thread, our disappointing year, the 2000 GF, Tom Scully (*shudder*), the Neeld era, etc. - doesn't truly mean anything of substance (as much as some of that still burns). We cheer at games, united by a sense of adventure, shared adrenaline and hope for a taste of glory, we hug our loves ones, and every moment is at the whim and grace of the universe. Nothing is promised beyond now. Going to hug my better half + little ones now (I returned to my laptop to finish some work - which, also, doesn't truly matter). BLWNBA 1,483 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 A very, very sad day for all of the footballing community. It’s always tough when someone passes in such tragic circumstances, but for someone so young with an apparent wide network of friends and acquaintances, coupled with his great career, it just adds another dimension to it. A tragic day for all involved and really adds perspective to issues often spoken and debated about in this board. Vale Sam Landsberger. 3 2 Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 (edited) I drive through this intersection everyday and did so an hour before this happened. No idea what happened but it's not great for trucks at the best of times and plenty of blind spots. Devastated about this news, was actually thinking pver the weekend how he was one of the few journos I like reading at the moment. Life is precious, every second of it. Don't know if I'll drive in tomorrow. RIP Sam. Edited August 20, 2024 by layzie 4 Quote

dees189227 12,512 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I think because it's the tragic nature of his death. I mean to get hit by a truck is just awful & his poor friends who were there with him & saw what happened. I enjoyed him on the midweek tackle & recently appreciated his daily olympic schedule tweets. Quote

No. 31 1,404 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Sad news, the sudden nature of it is tragic. He was a good footy journo. RIP. Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Not really comfortable sharing this but this morning when I drove through that intersection I stopped at Richmond Traders, got a bunch of roses and then left them on the curb at that intersection. Can't explain why I did it, I just did. Everyone please take care. 5 1 7 Quote

Demon Dynasty 17,165 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Only knew of Sam on mid week tackle but came across as a very decent journalist and fella. He didn't appear the muck raking type we sadlly see with the likes of you-know-who. Way too early and just unfair for all around him, especially his parents. The worst thing about losing anyone is the tough realisation that you will never see them or hear their voice again. R.I.P. Sam I'll be on board with his Bulldogs, hoping they can go all the way in Sept 1 Quote
dees189227 12,512 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Nice tribute by his mates on the mid week tackle. Gosh just read the story that he was on the phone to his mum when it happened. How awful 4 Quote
