I think most of the criticism of Clarry has been justified and mostly quiet objective. He has been disappointing, he knows he has a reputation for illegal handball yet keeps on doing it. His delivery & kicking this year have been poor. He gets sucked into giving away dumb free kicks.

His poor turnover arguably cost us the Port game. He got paid a massive amount and was poor this year and those are called facts.

Geez, cut him a bit of slack.   He doesn't get pinged that often for throws and other players are equally 'quick', some get pinged more than others.  Yes, he gets paid a lot, but so what.  A lot of the defense of Clarry has been justified and objective - you don't have a monopoly.

I think my posts are quiet balanced & offset the apologists on here who are always looking for excuses for underperforming players, coaches or MFC officials.

Part of the reason for our lack of success since the Norm Smith era is the army of sycophantic supporters always ready to trot out excuses for underperforming instead of demanding accountability.

Sure there are some posters who are what you call apologists.  And then there are some who are the reverse - always keen to see that dark side and put the boot in.  Doesn't make you balanced or right. The suggestion that part of the reason for 1 flag in 60 years is because of  sycophantic supporters is laughable.  When are we storming the club HQ?  Should I send the President the ashes of my microwaved membership card?

You like to show how tough and uncomprimising you are - as if that has any effect on what the club does any more than those who wear rose-coloured glasses do.  At least the latter group are happy.

I don’t think criticism of clarrys throws is fair. It’s the one area of his game that has held up this season.

I wonder who the AFL and Michael Christian will transfer the “free hit in the guts” to now Clarry is out of action? 😡

The MRO is a disgrace.  All the time in the world to get everything right yet they constantly get things wrong or miss various incidents

Just the way the AFL like it too.  Keeps footy in the news and keep it controversial

I'll lay better than even money that during the finals a high profile player will escape suspension over some 'technicality'

Looking back, we should have appealed the JVR* suspension in last years final series because this season, that thug from the filth got off with a deliberate elbow

At one stage during the match against Port, Oliver kicked a nice 45 metre drop punt into our forward line to 3 Melbourne players

The ball was marked unopposed by a Port player and none of the 3 Melbourne players even gave a contest.  Certainly, none of our forwards fought to get to the front position (the ball can often drop short)

But to my astonishment, the clueless commentators then criticised Clarrie on his kick forward?!

And of course, the boffins and stats guru's will have classed the kick as a clanger.  Total bs

Should Max put the cue in the rack so we can see a couple a games from Fullerton?

This should be on the table if he's carrying anything and even if he isn't for an early reset / insurance purposes going into the off season

Were you born in 2022?

1956 Actually & I've only seen the 2021 Premiership.

In the same time I've seen the Hawks go from rubbish to winning flags go to the bottom again have another re build, win more flags, become rubbish again then go past us in another rebuild.

In the modern era they've won maybe 11 premierships to our 1 & it happens partly because their members & supporters are a lot more demanding than our lot.

Finally, a common sense approach to injury and player management. Our management of players returning from injury has been really poor since the start of the '22 season. With the cue in the rack regarding finals footy this year, I personally think we should also allow May and Viney time to recover too. I don't think either seem right, and we should be giving both players the opportunity maximise the upcoming preseason and attack next season in full health.

Quite stupid comments…no team has the luxury of resting the many players that are running round with injuries. 2 come to mind in DeGoey & Curnow & then ..bringing Todd Marshall back  ..Alex Pearce etc …the list goes on.

Jay Clark think there's still a big watch on Clayton Oliver this off season even though Goodwin stated that he won't be traded.

He expects Geelong to dangle the carrot for Oliver and Sam Landsberger also stated that he's always thought Geelong would come after him.

Posted

Why would Goodwin sit in a press conference and categorically state both Clarry and Trac will be playing at Melbourne next year, if there was even a shred of doubt about it?

It is not up to either Clarry or Trac. Both signed long term deals and both won’t be let out of those deals after one bad season.

Besides, Clarry is not going to throw the support the club has given him back in their face. If anyone suggests otherwise, they don’t know Clarry at all.

Finals can’t come quick enough so the media can talk about something else… like Port and Brisbane inevitably sh!!ting the bed.

This isn’t a selection course, mate. The commentary isn’t around players that have ‘niggles’, and with respect to my comment I’ve sighted players that are clearly carrying injuries. What benefit is there in continue to play them?

Our injury management has been appalling since the 2021 Finals with players returned from injury far too quickly.

Not overly sure what the purpose of the named players are to be honest. It’s a complete false equivalency if you’re somehow suggesting they’ve been managed the same way as Spargo, Salem, Oliver, Petty, May etc.

Cmon Sue, Clarry was an absolute liability against Port, l really felt sorry him, he tried his guts out but couldn’t run, he fumbled & look completely exhausted, he would’ve hated to see footage of that.

He’s a competitive beast  & like Petracca sometimes you have to be told “your not playing”or in Tracs case “you’re not coming back on”

Unprofessional by whoever let this happen

Clarry played under duress & the rib injury would have been the final straw. Clarry was still better than anyone else we had and one of the main reasons the club kept playing him would have been for his mental health. Can you really imagine how he would have been in rehab  for half the season. Don’t criticise the club as you have no idea of how the club & the player worked together to get him to where he was.

Max was our best player against the Dogs and equally best in a stellar game against Port along side Kozzie and I noted his kicking power was back against Power. He is a proud man and wants to finish strong and lead. Let him do that. And let him fit into a 7th AA blazer FFS.

Ok so what is the point?

It’s very clear that we hold the power given both of their contracts. If Goodwin is saying they’re staying, it’s because as senior coach he knows we will not trade them regardless of what offers come our way for them.

I don’t know how many more ways the club can say they’re not leaving.

The point is that a lot can play out between now and October. Things change quickly such such personal circumstances. If Oliver came to the club and requested a fresh start for the benefit of his mental health then there's no doubt the club would certainly assess the options.

The Jesse Hogan point was he was also contracted for a few years and was dealing with a lot of personal issues with his family and mental health. Goodwin was asked around September 2018 and categorically denied he would be traded. Well didn't that all change..

You can absolutely believe what you want to believe from Goodwins presser because of course he's going to play a straight bat.

Had he come out and said that there are no guarantees that Oliver remains with the club then imagine the media going to town and the significance of the story.

Look at the way Ken Hickley has handled the Houston talk the past few weeks. All Hinkley has been saying about Houston is "he's contracted player and we expects to stay" stock standard coaching 101 in how to play a straight bat to the media and not fuel the fire. Yet all the talk is that he's absolutely set on coming back to Victoria.

I'm not saying he will be traded at all purely because I don't think a club will take on his huge contract and salary, but if an opposition club came and dangled an offer that would be too good to refuse for the footy club, then absolutely, you'd be pretty stupid to think that the footy club wouldn't look at it.

I definitely think Petracca absolutely stays, and the club will be he'll bent in him staying but I think there is still a bit to play out regarding Oliver.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
