This is the biggest Rort in modern day AFL HISTORY!!

If you have Father sons, you shouldn't be allowed academies.

Shallow draft ? Theres plenty of talent. The issue is that the academy and father son picks have such a high concentration across the first round. It’s such a compromised pathway now that it is giving a huge lift to Giants, Swans ,Lions and Suns (Lions and Swans in particular that have full academy players plus father-son availability).

Cal Twomey said the other day that even with the academy players, it's one of the weakest drafts he can remember.

with the majority of the draft always coming from victoria, i do wonder how much covid years of 2021-22 in particular had an adverse effect on the last few draft classes

this year's crop would have all been 14-16 in those key years...and they barely played in that time period due to the global pandemic

pretty crucial time to miss out on development

Lots of talent in the Suns and Lions Academy programs. One youngster who should be marked in PEN on JTs list is Harrison Bridge. Left footer half back who starred in early Coates league matches for Lions academy. Averaged 20 possessions, 5 marks and 3 tackles a match across the 4 games played by the young Lions. Kicking is elite at DE80-90% and can kick 50+ easily Unfortunately he got injured early in the under 18s championship in the first game for the allies v SA. Bridge played some QAFL games as well and excelled for Sherwood. AFL Lions probably use most points for Daniel Annable so Bridge might be beyond them at a later pick. One to highly consider.

I really really want us to get up to Lachy Dovaston as a small forward who kicks goals and can work up the ground

Secondly Sam Cumming is my next option as just a nice kicker

then you throw in Sinnema and White and maybe a new developing ruck or FB and thats a good mix

i realise getting dovaston and cumming is a massive ask but at this stage my knowledge deeper into the draft isnt there

The final game of the championships was anticlimactic because SA wrapped them up so early in the piece. Vic Country ended up taking second spot with a comfortable victory over their Metro cousins who were disappointing.

VIC COUNTRY 4.4 | 6.7 | 9.8 | 14.10 (94)

VIC METRO 2.2 | 3.6 | 6.8 | 9.10 (64)

GOALS:

Vic Country: T. Byrne 5, H. Mikunda 2, J. Pickett 2, W. Duursma, J. Mellor, Z. O’Keefe, J. Scapin, C. Walker

Vic Metro: L. Dovaston 2, C. Duff-Tytler 2, O. Ainsworth, H. El Achkar, L. Emmett, J. Ison, Z. McCarthy

BEST:

Vic Country: T. Byrne, W. Duursma, H. Dean, C. Walker, H. Mikunda, R. Onley

Vic Metro: C. Duff-Tytler, J. Dalton, A. Sweid, O. Greeves, M. Kondogiannis, X. Taylor

MVPs:

Vic Country: Willem Duursma (Gippsland Power)

Vic Metro: Oliver Greeves (Vic Metro)

Vic Country upset their Metro counterparts to end the Under 18 National Championships in second spot, as a pick one contender shone.

Not a bad draft to have traded out a top pick for XL.

The talent across the championships was pretty bare to be honest.

Big call here but I can't recall a year where the talent pool has been so poor as what it is this year alone.

@Whispering_Jack @dazzledavey36 thanks. I think the talent pool is “less, lower” and also highlighted by the many many academy, NGA or father son picks. Up to 10 first rounders could be already pre-nominated so the “first round” could stretch to pick 28 or 29 this year. I have a few smokies that could be good value for the Dees in the 2nd or 3rd round. It’s these picks that also can prove a recruiters value.

I thought Sinnema looked okay and I think we will nominate and add him, maybe as a late pick or as a cat B rookie. He has class with the footy in hand. He’s not an instant walk up and will need time. But a skill ball user is something we need to add.

Harry Dean has rocketed into top 10 calculations

He did look like a player. 😭Blues will add a good one to their list.

If Tairon Ah-Mu is there at one of our picks especially if we manage to trade in a second rounder do we take him? I haven’t paid much attention to the young kids in this draft only a few so not sure if they’re are better players suited to us around his draft ranking position

I have watched him and our actual academy players but not many others. So I’m not sure if we end up getting a pick around his draft ranking if there’s better options or not. Big lad isn’t he!

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
