The club is going to lose SIGNIFICANT amounts of members.

Their best monetary decision is to get rid of Goodwin, attempt to keep the members because they’ll lose way more with members dropping off, then Goodwin.

It’s probably their only shot to get something out of the team, clearly they aren’t clicking with Goodwin anymore and have no faith.

Yes and once those members are lost don't presume they will just automatically come back. They may be lost for good.

Whatever the question is, yesterday's coaches like Buckley and Longmire are not the answer.

BTW, how have the Swans, North, Eagles and even the Saints gone with new coaches? Any better? (Not suggesting we keep Goodwin either.)

I think it doesn’t come down to the thought that a change will fix the issues, it’s more so the fact that what we have is simply not working, and they need change to occur to see if it might fix. Continuing on this path is worse than taking a risk, which may or not pan out.

It's time to thank Goodwin and move on.

Start the search early and have a new head coach by preseason day 1

Scary.. isn’t it. Going to be a hard road for the board to figure out things to get back to 2021 standards, on and off field. They also shouldn’t settle for that and need to push to be one of the big clubs. Unlikely to happen, but settling for mediocrity is not good enough.

The HUN reporting that this is just the scheduled monthly board meeting, and Goodwin was scheduled to present.

The reason why I wouldn’t want Longmire, Buckley or even Simpson is because I am not overly confident in thier ability to reinvent and would just stick to what they know which can be dangerous in an ever evolving era of footy.

They were great coaches in their own rights, but I feel like high calibre assistants like Jaymie Graham or a Caracalla would come into the club with no prior coaching experience or prejudice and get a free shot at it like what we saw with Kingsley and McRae. It would also appease the fans in the sense of having a direct path and vision going forward. Currently under Goodwin, we have no clear identity, so what is there to lose?

A fresh restart with a rookie like Graham who is part of the Fremantle resurgence and West Coast premiership forward coach may be the way to go. Wouldn’t be against looking at someone like Cameron Bruce who was handpicked by Fagan to be the man to revitalize their midfield when he was let go by Carlton.

Can't believe that we couldn't get four in the centre square to defend the last 8 seconds of a game and at least draw.

And who says the three others need to be near the ruckman for the bounce. They could have been anywhere in the square. Mindboggling incompetence all round.

I should think a reasonable and logical approach by Melbourne that respects where all parties come to this point ,their responsibilities and their histories; would be a negotiated exit for Simon.

Allow him his 'story' , his pride intact and the opportunity to drive the end narrative. Allow him an honourable egress. He deserves that. But we deserve better than our current situation.

The choice for Simon ought to be

1) Go now ( end of season) but announce now so we can get on with things. Negotiated settlement.

2) Stay and your life will be merry hell. Under the pump by club and media ( no fun for anyone) ..and further impact your legacy.

I guess that explains why Goody was just standing there, motionless, hands in pockets during that last 30sec meltdown. He was already strategising in his head what spin he was going to deliver during this scheduled board meeting. I'm sure he'll convince the board we're on the right track with the first 3qtr display.

Stay away from the tried coaches. New blood for the new game. Someone like a Sam Mitchell. The Geelong alumni like Corey Enright/Steven King are great starts.

Modern coaches for the modern game is the way forward.

Damien Hardwick is a different case study because he knew it was time to leave Richmond and knew what he was walking into with that list at GC.

We aren’t in the position to hand over a list that is on the cusp of success anymore so to get a coach like Longmire, Buckley, Simpson or Hinkley would be the wrong move in my opinion.

Walking back to the station he said "I'm going for Geelong now" (his mum's team) but we both know it's an empty threat. He's saddled with this curse now just like I was. He's at the age where he loves his footy, watches any game, watches YouTube vids on all the different clubs etc, starting to love the history of the game. Some weeks he's more interested in attending a neutral game instead of watching Melbourne play.

It sucks because it impacts their enjoyment of the sport as a whole, I told him we'll use our AFL memberships to go watch the finals in Vic this year and either barrack for GC/GWS or against the Pies (depending on who is playing).

I really feel for the youngsters supporting this club.

I'm at a point where I've seen it all now with this club and while it never gets any easier putting up with embarrassment like this, I do feel like I kind of know what to expect.

But for kids a loss like this would be soul destroying. If I saw just one kid in tears after that last night it would have been heart shattering.

Its character building for the lad.

I mean I'm glad to know there is a board meeting today as they should have a nice old chat. (not that I expect anything)

I'm more disturbed people follow Tom Morris on socials...

But it would be nice to know that Smith and Geurra (SP?) are getting the minutes or having questions asked on their behalf.

And in typical MFC fashion we have to make sure that a scheduled board meeting has more media attendance than the Morwell magistrates court.

i asked claude ai who would be the best and worst possible candidates based on some key metrics

best 3:

1. Ross Lyon (The Perfect Fit)

Why he's ideal:

Proven success: Multiple Grand Finals with different clubs (St Kilda, Fremantle)

Tactical adaptability: Famous for completely changing gameplans mid-season based on personnel

Zero tolerance for passengers: Will drop stars if they're not giving 100% - did it repeatedly at both clubs

Ruthless standards: Players either buy in completely or get moved on

Available: Currently doing media but would take the right opportunity

Perfect for Melbourne's issues: He'd identify the ego problems immediately and either fix attitudes or force list changes.

2. Damien Hardwick (If Available)

Why he fits:

Ultimate success: 3 premierships with Richmond's "no stars, all effort" culture

Gameplan evolution: Completely reinvented Richmond's style multiple times during their dynasty

Standards obsession: Built a culture where effort was non-negotiable

Tough love master: Players either embraced the system or got traded

Caveat: Might stay at Gold Coast, but if available, he's proven he can fix exactly Melbourne's problems.

3. John Longmire (Long Shot but Perfect)

Why he'd be transformative:

Sustained excellence: Kept Sydney competitive for over a decade

Tactical flexibility: Adapted through multiple rule changes and personnel shifts

Culture builder: Sydney's "no individual above the team" mentality

Standards enforcer: Drops players regardless of reputation if standards slip

The issue: Extremely unlikely to leave Sydney, but if he did, he'd be the perfect cultural reset.

WORST 3

1. Brett Ratten (The Ultimate Disaster)

Why he'd be catastrophic:

Zero tactical adaptability: Stubbornly sticks to the same gameplan regardless of personnel or opposition

Soft on standards: Players consistently switched off under him at Carlton and St Kilda

Can't handle egos: Lost control of Carlton's playing group completely

Proven failure with talent: Had talented lists at both clubs and achieved nothing

Still coaching mindset: Would probably try to persist with Melbourne's failed 2021 approach

The nightmare scenario: He'd let the current ego problems fester while running the same failed gameplan.

2. Nathan Buckley (The Ego Enabler)

Why he'd be terrible:

Player's mate syndrome: Too close to players, struggles with tough decisions

Tactical rigidity: Collingwood's gameplan barely evolved during his entire tenure

Standards issues: Collingwood consistently had effort problems under him

Can't handle pressure: Crumbled in big moments repeatedly

Won't drop stars: Even when players weren't performing, he'd persist with "names"

The problem: Melbourne needs someone to crack the whip, not someone who'll be their friend.

3. David Teague (The Mediocrity Merchant)

Why he'd destroy them:

Zero tactical innovation: Carlton's gameplan under him was prehistoric

Can't command respect: Players openly questioned him at Carlton

Soft approach: Never established proper standards or accountability

List management disasters: Poor at identifying who should stay or go

Mentally weak: Caved under pressure constantly

The horror show: Would turn Melbourne into Carlton circa 2019-2021 - talented but directionless with zero accountability.

I can very easily see Goodwin surviving today and recording a standard 5-6 goal win against WC on the weekend.

Which is about the football equivalent of this GIF.

This Is Fine GIF

Change is needed now. Not 10 rounds into 2026 when we finally realise that we should've pulled the trigger earlier.

Scheduled or otherwise the timing is fortuitous.

I can only imagine the agenda was updated after yesterday. ( well, you'd hope so )

Was hoping to wake up to the news of Goodwins sacking but then realised we haven’t got a CEO or president to do the job.

What a basket case of a club

Hey but there’s plenty of love ❤️

Knowing us, he'll walk away with a three year extension.

If Goodwin survives this utter humiliation, it proves that he is unsackable.

Maybe only a coordinated fan boycott would bring the board to its senses.

Unfortunately tonight's meeting will not result in any changes. No CEO or president to make those changes, and no spine or gut to make the needed hard calls. Goodwin will walk away with "full-backing of the board" and the mismanagement will continue.

I can see Richardson being the scapegoat here, meanwhile things will be as they always are, nothing will change, we will win a few then lose a few and the cycle continues.

The fitting result for the rudderless club we have become, devoid of leadership and direction

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
