Time to go Goody?

The enormity of what we “achieved” today must not be minimised.

Of course we yet again [censored] up a close finish. The final 2 minutes are a checklist of how to embarrass yourself in losing a close game from in front.

But to be in that situation at all, or even anything close to it, took such a unique and rarely seen level of disgrace that it has to be properly acknowledged.

When it comes as the 27th loss out of our last 44 games, with membership spiralling, with formerly elite players floundering, with no leadership on the field, it cannot be tolerated.

But nothing will be done, coz we are a GUTLESS club

Online threat to Simon Goodwin reported to AFL Integrity...

An anonymous social media post has been passed on by the Demons to the AFL

I know everyone is upset, but this is putrid behavior. If it was a Melbourne member I hope they’re banned for life.

Everyone is entitled to be upset and angry, but let’s get some perspective.

Rubbish carry on!

This really pisses me off because it's obviously idiotic but it's also taking the spotlight off the real story which should be "Dees in crisis. Goodwin's future being decided by board".

I know we have said to sack coaches ad nauseum, but in all seriousness with an interim CEO and President, how does this technically get done?

Does getting Paul and Steve (zoom/webex or whatever) in for an emergency meeting tomorrow to vote and decide on the future of our coaching dept even constitutional given they haven't officially started? Does the charter / constitution allow for an interim ceo/president to sack the coach and gm of footy now? Surely there is a way to act now. The job is clearly untennable and the sooner we start looking for a replacement the better. There is no way on earth Goodwin is the coach in 2026.

You'd think if the board and management are any good, they'd find a way to just discuss it with both incoming and outgoing and come to a clear strategy either way.

But they must do it tomorrow.

I'm incredibly sad about today now.

Another VFL / AFL record we've got ourselves. It's not a good one.

There are good people on and off the field and they care about each other and they are trying really hard.

I think the effort and want is there to do better.

But when a workplace is broken, you have to be fair to everyone and make the hard decisions swiftly and decisively.

The last two years of sliding have been hard for everyone.

Some action needs to be taken no matter who loves who or who's a good bloke.

He could be referring to the govt work done by the big 4 consultancies such as PWC. Very shoddy and very expensive

Threatening someone because of a [censored] football game is absolutely sad and pathetic. Sucks that both he and Voss have had to deal with this.

I haven’t provided my thoughts on Goody’s tenure previously. I think the only comments I have made were around having a soft spot for him (due to coaching us to a flag). After today’s performance, I do think it’s time we move him on; we need a fresh start next season, along with new line coaches.

Completely agree (although, the text that was sent about Voss was in no way a threat).

I want to talk about leadership:

If twenty senior players on really high salaries agreed to forego $50k for one season it would be enough to terminate Simon (Record breakingly) Badloss' contract a year early without the club suffering any more financial loss and embarrassment.

Show some leadership Demons

The last quarter simply is a by-product of all the little festerings that have gone on at this club over the last 12-18 months.

Nothing more and nothing less.

A completely unorganised group of senior players who are simply not connected. No matter what people say. They play for themselves. And that's part of why you get these enormous inconsistencies within games.

A coach who just cannot inspire and has zapped all the fun out of footy. The players feel it, we feel it. No vibe to our games, to the crowd, just vanilla.

That Oliver moment where he could have finished the game off was one of the most amazing but also hardly surprising pieces of play I've seen. How can someone who has previously been so elite in an area of his game, equally have perhaps the worst composure of any best 22 player across the league?

Like, is that Melbourne to a T or what?

Oliver's inability to think in moments like that is just unbelievable. So dumb. It's wild.

Goody and Oliver to go end of year.

Bring Buckley in, a few strong line coaches and watch the team transform.

Buckley would be the best option available for mine. So many issues but the list still has some strengths even if it is no longer in contending mode.

Sometimes it's not what is being said but who is saying it like with Roos.

Agree with your take on that moment with Oliver - actually I think there were two Oliver moments. Really is a shadow of his former self.

One thing that really p’d me off in his press conference was him harping on about close game scenarios - this was anything but a close game at ¾ time yet he couldn’t didn’t explain why the wheels fell off to make it a close game.

Will we ever be able to trust this mob again under the same management on and off field? I can’t.

I will always be grateful for Simon and who ever else was involved in taking us to 2021 and the complete dominance that season was. But I just don't think he is that smart tbh. Doesn't really come across as Rhodes Scholar material.

Seriously? The bloke who appointed Mark Neeld?

No thanks.

To be fair, that focus was the journos' choice and down to their questions. Goodwin did highlight the smashing in the midfield and loss of momentum which is on the senior players.

Surely Lyon has to accept Goodwin isn’t the man anymore! Lyon was part of a similar loss against Essendon got run over in the last qtr, was Northey last season in 92…

Our 4th quarters have been atrocious this year.. our fitness coach needs to go aswell

It’s officially time IMO, I have waited but seen today his tenure is up.

The lack of ability in the players to identify St Kilda we’re playing on at all costs and going run and gun, is a coaching debacle.

Slow the game down ffs, players playing on and Max punching taps. Fed with Saints running hard off half back was just dub.

Yes a lot of that is o the players but well drilled players don’t do that.

Thank you very much for your time,, the flag, the memories etc but the time has come for a new voice

I’m Not sure Rhodes Scholar is our marker. The Mad Monk was a Rhodes. Not to politicise it as I despise them both equally

I do not think an interim president and CEO would sack the coach.

We have not had a series of massive defeats.

There does not seem to be a disconnect between the coach and players which is symptomatic of huge defeats.

We just have to hope that today's defeat does not knock the stuffing out of the team.

Stopped to a walk in the last q. Why, leadership fell away?

Like most i am still in shock.

Wait what

Being up by 46 at 3QT, 9 goals in a row

Not a massive defeat?

But to be in that situation at all

It's truly phenomenal in its awfulness.

People on here are talking "worse than 186" and I think in the cold hard light of day, most people will say "Actually, yeah, it's not far off."

I am a professional employee I manage people if they don’t perform I am held responsible.. I can forgive the straight loss finals we lost Trac had a broken leg yet still tried his guts out Gawn was injured Oliver was injured Brayshaw was injured kozzy got suspended. However what I can’t understand is we have not had a fwd line for years Goodwin is responsible for that.. Goodwin has had so much help provided to him we have changed assistant coaches over and over but we are not improving all that is happening is we are becoming IRRELEVANT again. It’s time to grow a set of balls and sort this club out it’s time to say to the players if you don’t want to be here leave but sorry Goodwin is not the man to do that.

I just want a coach that understands how to set and maintain a culture and high standards.

You think Paul Roos was some tactical mastermind? That he somehow TACTICALLY gave Max the belief to become the best ruckman ever?

The art of coaching is in walking the fine line between teaching, nurturing, ridiculing, inspiring. Line coaches and analysts should be on top of the other stuff.

Simon may have some attributes -but it was Roos and his handpicked line coaches who turned our culture around. Recruited competitors, inspired Max, turned our VFL team into flag winning depth.

Simon carried that legacy to a flag...the management thereafter have destroyed the culture Roos built. I called it the first pre season after - it's always noticeable if you know where to look.

We're now in that position again where we need someone to come in and turn the culture around. Longmire could be it, but I'm not sure he is.

Not sure we have anyone coming to save us this time around. Especially with Tassie around the corner.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show.
