I think the problem is either/both are only coming to us if the money is absurd

the other issue is if we're giving away oliver for little (a second round pick), paying overs for flanders (two first round picks), and then paying the former $500k to play elsewhere and the latter $1m, aren't we better off just keeping clayton?

Yes, agree. The average teams that have cut back hard were rewarded with either eventual salary cap relief (Collingwood) or picks (Richmond)… we won’t get either with clarry so as long as he isn’t a a cultural problem you’re almost better off keeping him and hoping a) he improves a bit or b) the way the game is played changes again to favour more contested types

How badly do we need a Thilthorpe type?

Been that way for 10-15 yrs.

We got Hogan and decided to send him on his way.

Loads of great players have been given the boot. Insanity.

While I tend to agree I’m not sure what other avenues we have to improve our list from both an draft pick and cap space point of view

If we don’t bring in a number of new players this off season we’re essentially running back the same list as 2024/25, and it’s safe to say supporters won’t tolerate another bottom six finish from a group that has so many senior/highly paid players

It might not be Clarry but something has to give, lest we just back in the same group to naturally improve

"decided" to send hogan on his way?? insomuch as doing that trade contributed significantly to our premiership, sure

the only other true key forward i can recall having on our list between neitz and hogan is mitch clark and, well, there were other issues at play there in the end beyond injury

we've definitely lost some ripper players to homesickness, but there's not many clubs who don't

Crazy to let go of Hogan

Missed out on those 18 goals he kicked for Freo

And all we got was May and a flag

This seems like massive conjecture.

So who out of Geelong, Collingwood or Hawthorn is Tom shilling for this time?

We hardly gave Hogan the boot and that trade gave us the 2021 Premiership with getting May out

Totally agree with that, Maysie was a huge part of the premiership and success since then. No doubt.

I wonder, if he hadn’t have come, and another defends took his spot, with Ben Brown being cooked with his knees, would we have had the same outcome, more success or less without May and having Hogan?

The one thing I feel confident in was Frosty and Oscar McDonald weren't getting it done, we had to bring in a genuine full back.

But I think what you're really glossing over is Hogan had to go home and go through his struggles to get to current GWS Hogan.

He did nothing at Freo in 19/20. Played 9 games in GWS in 21. Was better in 22/23 but still hit and miss and not a consistent performer. It took him until last year to finally really deliver on his talent.

Meanwhile Ben Brown fell apart quickly but his 2021 finals series is super underrated. Obviously we are still searching for a replacement and I would've been nice to have him deliver in 22/23 but at least he did it when we needed to win a flag.

Good point. I guess hindsight is always there, you see where Hogan is now and it’s a deflating feeling knowing we could have genuine forward.

Trading our Hogan and Watts won us a flag and were 100% correct list calls. We got May and Fritsch as a direct result of those trades. Without either of them, we don't win that 21 flag. Fritsch alone has kicked more goals than Hogan since that trade.

Hogan wanted to go home and took 6 seasons to return to being a good player. He's a gun again now, but he's a 30 year old who's battled physical and mental issues for the majority of his career. He's basically at the end of his career.

Watts is long retired.

Yes we need a quality key forward now, but we made the right call trading those players out at the time. There's a seven year gap, and where we are now is not related to what happened back then.

Don’t disagree, as I said in my other comments.

Will be very interesting to see what happens at the end of the season. I love all our players and would hate to see any traded - particualrly those from the 2021 premiership team.... BUT we obviously have to look to improve and you have to give something to get something.

When I look at our key defenders, we seem to suddenly have more than we need - particularly if Petty is in the mix there (which I suspect he is if we had another big body that can play forward). I'd hate to see him go but I think May would be the one that could make a difference for a team that is otherwise looking really solid - eg the Dogs have a great list but their defence is still their achilles heel.

Lever is another that has potentially been passed by Disco. Or is he just injured? Would hate to see him go but with Petty, Disco, Adams, TMac (surely gets another year) and Howes I think we have enough coverage there.

I have no idea if this Lever talk has any merit, honestly if he was not properly informed well in advance then that isn't cool by the FD and Goody. But if we were to trade away a player that might actually have some currency then Lever could be one. To clarify, I'm not saying we should do it, but given we have Howes showing some real development while Disco has taken big leaps this year AND we have Petty who is a much better defender than a forward, we have coverage.

Trade Lever (or Petty) for Jamara. We need a key forward. They need a defender.

Do not touch JUH. He is trouble, and the only way he ever succeeds is by moving away from his 'associates' in Victoria.

Absolutely not!

With Jamaras issues off field, I think any club who has him will have consistent issues.

Goodwin pretty much confirmed they won't go down the pathway of JUH.

Glad we won't touch him. Had a mate bump into him in Bali last off season at one of the popular night spot.. wowee oh boy...

How was that interaction? What was he doing?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
