To me Clarry is purely saying the results went downhill, not that anyone new did anything wrong. ‘It’s’ means results not fitness.

Burgo being great doesn’t mean Selwyn isn’t the next best.

That much-reported incident where he had angry words with Selwyn at training was totally overblown IMHO. Clarrie doesn’t even remember it. There’s definitely no lingering grudge, there never was. They get on really well.

I'm not too fussed as to the reason our collective and in some cases individual fitness has dropped away. I'd like to address that asap so we can really start to compete with the better teams when it really matters.

I watched the 2021 GF replay recently and if you don't think some of our more experienced players have dropped off in terms of speed/fitness then we must be living in a parallel universe

I’ve got a feeling Selwyn’s not getting the boot. If he is to get the boot, I don’t think he’s been told yet. He was at the Casey semi on Saturday, not in a work capacity but as a fan. As were other members of our AFL staff: Vinnie (our guy with the laptop who was always next to Goody at games), Lamby, JT, Paul Guerra, Steven Smith, a couple of the trainers. All there as fans only (not to be confused with Only Fans 😅)

Selwyn didn’t seem to be someone who’s been given the arze. Unless he has been but it’s what he wanted 🤷‍♀️

I know Selwyn is out of contract but do we presume that the decision wont be made until the new coach comes in? Whoever that is may have someone in mind perhaps?

That could be the case. FD contracts usually expire at the end of October, certainly not before end of Sept by which time we will have a coach.

My understanding is he's staying but maybe not something taking into account with a new coach coming in

Of course I do but I think that's more individual circumstances, age and motivation more than the actual structured fitness program. Fitness and results go together especially when it's core pieces like Oliver, Tracc and Salem who have dropped away. A big part of the Burgo effect was his ability to tap in to motivation and get guys to certain levels. But like 16 other clubs aside from Adelaide we need to find a way for non Burgo fitness guy to connect with the next crop of players.

Quite a few Freo players I heard in interviews praised the confidence in their fitness to be one of the best last qtr teams this year with many come from behind victories. I hope Melb makes some enquires.

Phil Merriman has previously worked at Melbourne and was a big loss when he went to Fremantle.

I'm not pointing the finger at the Griffiths though.

I don't think any of us know exactly the reason why so many have dropped off but it's a fact and someone needs to either find a way to fix it or maybe it is time to farewell some club favorites that potentially don't have the hunger or will to give 100%

If he's out of contract then its curtains for him.

Any new coach with any sort of experience will be bringing in his own fitness gurus.

I don't know about that.

They might want to bring in their own high-performance manager but i suspect at most clubs that person's salary is only behind the CEO and senior coach on the pay scale.

So, let's say Bucks gets the gig and want to bring in his choice of high-performance manager.

That person needs to be available - and the best are no doubt locked up. And assuming they can break their current contract, we need to be able to meet their salary demands.

I think we’d be being irresponsible to do anything other than leave open as much flexibility as we reasonably can in the FD for the new coach to build the team they want

I know if I was in that position I'd be bring in my own people in the specific fields I believe are important in building a successful program.

Mine too.

Brisbane have been fitter since he left, and we have been less fit. Our injury record wasn't awful this year but it it so concerning how many clearly semi-fit players have taken the park since 2022. The club should always be looking for ways to improve.
