I’m not a Laurie fan, but he needs to be given a good run of games in the AFL to see if he will make it instead of dropping him after 1 game, playing him in the VFL for another 3 before getting a call up, only to be dropped again.

Thats on Goodwin and his inability to properly develop players.

Ā

Not entirely sure why but I can see Laurie coming along next year. One of those players that it may well just 'click' for.

He can get fitter and stronger, he can get more composed with the ball, the team can move the ball faster to find him in space.

But will it matter if he’s still short and insanely slow?

It’s just a physical package that doesn’t make sense.Ā

If he adds bulk to play as a mid and win more contested ball he’ll just get slower?

If he trims right up to cover the ground he’ll be still be slow with the bonus of also being light.Ā

Goodwin can't properly develop players?

McVee, Rivers, Pickett, Windsor, Turner, JVR, Tholstrup, Bowey, Jackson, Howes, Chandler, Petty, Fritsch, Spargo, ANB, Hunt would beg to differ.

Trac, Clarry, Max, May, Lever plus more.Ā

Ā

We're that desperate for depth, we have no choice but to keep him.

Agree.Ā  He'll make a good average player, and that's not unkind as you need that type to fill gaps.Ā  But you need that x factor to be really good if you don't have height or pace.Ā  At he extreme end a guy like Caleb Daniel got a lot of the ball and never missed targets although age has caught up with that.Ā  And because of that you don't get a lot of time to show you have it, simply because you are competing with a lot of similar types.Ā  Ā I hope he develops something special next year.

Footnote …His turnover last night was horrible … when running free with 3 free demons players , he kicked it straight to Pies player (they went back up the field to kick a goal) !!Ā

Pretty sure that was caused by the forward (JVR??) deciding to double back towards the pocket, just as Laurie committed to the kick.

Forwards would usually lead at the ball carrier Ā

As someone else said, difficult to know what your forwards are going to do if you only get half a game at a time.

Ā

That’s not what I saw.

When he released the ball without pressure, he had the Pies player in front of him and kicked it straight to him.

Different game ?? Ā Laurie runs free and kicks without pressure… straight to the Pies player right in front of him. No forward error. Ā Laurie kicked it straight to the Pies player. Horrendous turnover. Ā

Every player turned the ball over horribly on Friday, turnovers are a part of the game. You can't expect perfection, particularly in the conditions they played in.

Any comments on what he did well? Like him beating both Daicos brothers and sidebottom at the ground ball contest and gettingthe clearing handball to ANB? His in-board left kick showing his ability to be dual sided? Or his handball to Viney resulting in a centre clearance. All in the highlights below.

FYI I don't think he's best 22, but I think he should be pushing hard for it next year.

And just on that turnover after watching it again, Petty looked flat footed and neither committing to a lead forward or back. Kicking error is still on Laurie but I don't blame him for trying to draw him to the ball rather than kick it 55+ over the top in the rain.

Edit: not sure why the link doesn't take you to the highlights but can be found via the AFL app

Why didn't he play more games this year? I know he should be given a chance but it doesn't feel right jumping off Woewodin without giving him an extended run but then saying it's exactly what Laurie needs.

Make or break next year.

Woewodin played 16 (10 as sub) games this year, Laurie played 6 (3 as sub). We don't have to jump off either but both clearly have flaws in their game that have prevented them from cementing a best 22 spot.

I saw most of the Taj subs into games this year as equivalent to a soccer game bringing someone on with 5 minutes left. It shows very little of what someone is capable of and does little for their development.

Both definitely have flaws but I hope the people hoping Laurie gets a run will be fair to some of these others.

Don't disagree. I strongly dislike the sub role in general.

Hoping we see improvements out of Laurie, Woewy, K Brown and AMW inside the 22 next year.

Some of the decisions and execution towards the end of our transitional play Friday night was diabolical. Laurie definitely not alone there.

It's not surprising we struggled on Friday given no Trac, Oliver, Sparrow, Spargo, Windsor (and Brayshaw), the depth players will struggle to cover that in the middle of the ground.

Even if Laurie is not Best 22 in Season2025 i still think he's adequate depth. I don't think he'll get a consistent run of games with us and probably will be a depth player, which all clubs need.Ā

So that determines his whole career ???

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
