Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 3, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

Gonna go out on a bit of a limb here and say... getting Clarry right should possibly be our highest priority between now and post the bye!

How we do that i don't know (very few ready made mids knocking on the door for a 'managed' situation) but the FD and Sports ppl will really need to make sure Clarry's hand gets to a fully recovered state over the next 4 to 6 IF we're to go deep into finals and possibly further.

Does the FD consider resting Clarry for say Kolt or Sestan in order to get Clarry right for the post bye leg?

Thanks Demon Dynasty I can relax now and yes the medical team have to find a way to fix Clayton’s hand but probably don’t want to put him on ice as he doesn’t cope well being out of his game routine. It is a bloody tough one.

Mods if you could alter my last post's header from round 3 to "to Round 4, 2024" if possible pls 🙏🏼

DZ i hear what you're saying but clarry would still be training / at club on a regular basis if he misses a week or even two (if needed).  I'm sure he'll have a busy program to get through.  It just won't involve any work that might impact the hand for a bit till it's back towards normal.

Getting Clarry back towards his usual speed would change this completely.  Presently 30% off his season 2023 rating.

The Clarry of 2019 - 23 would see us sitting alongside Port & the Dogs.  The Swans got off to a hot start but i expect them to come back to the pack as the season rolls along.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

That’s a smashing at stoppage. Couldn’t generate scores ourselves plus couldn’t stop them.

Given our strengths are normally contest, stoppage work and pressure it looks to me like a one off where we just physically couldn’t perform rather than a fundamental personnel/game style issue. Wouldn’t want to put up these numbers against the Cats and Blues though.

Round 5, 2024 MCG - Demons vs Lions

Absolutely mauled.  Especially the regular midfielders.

Team Rating 20% off 2023.  Bottom 6 off a cliff vs 2023!

Hopefully a one-off off game following the two weeks in Adelaide but who knows.

The numbers are no prettier than last night's showing with a few notable exceptions.

Notably Max, Lever, Rivers, T-Mac & Lingers.

Rivers with 33% CBA and quite serviceable out of the middle.  Probably our best mid on the night.  That has to tell the FD something surely?  Hopefully they come around to playing him in the middle more often and just more!  He just might be the dynamic lift needed and personally i think he has more upside potential here than Salem & Sparrow.

One positive on the rookie front was a 20% improvement by Woe from his wobbly 2023 rating (many subbed results in there).

Fritta & Petty barely registering a positive rating.  BBB not far behind and pretty much the same lowely rating as last week.  Minimal / poor supply obviously didn't help their cause.  Not a great result for Chandler either.

I know we usually play one short at the stoppage and a spare behind play, that seemed to kill us last night.

I do wonder if they should be changing that up against certain sides like Brisbane and Carlton who are really strong in a stoppage scenario.

Yes this was something i raised last night just after half time in the game day thread.

If that was the case, especially after half time, then it would be a pretty dissapointing outcome for the brains trust if they allowed this to continue throughout the match or left it too late.

Jeez the pressure factor was so out of whack for us and then DD our player ratings down 20% on our 2023 average is dreadful. Our six best players can hold their heads up but the Lions had seven of the top ten players out on the ground, we looked fatigue’d right from the get go, also as you mentioned previously need to get Clayton’s hand right before he does any more damage. It was very hard to watch that game last night and a quiet drive home.

The numbers tell the tale.  Killed in clearance leading to massive time in forward half discrepancy.  Shark inside to outside to i 50 kick and repeat. Lack of pressure, tackles and chase, no groundball skills.

So many players off the boil.

Needs to be addressed before it sets the ‘how to beat the demons’ blueprint.

Also, was that the worst umpiring you have seen in a long time???

That first quarter in particular.  Both teams pressure rating was well above AFL average but the Lions' were off the charts and that set the tone for their night.

We couldn't go with their pressure in quarters 2 or 3 either.

I'm still of the belief that if we had a ready made mid to come in and replace Clarry for this match we would have done so and sent him in for surgery post the Crows.

There were a few concerned faces at the Cap's run on Weds when Clarry was leaving the track.

In hindsight his horror rating against the Crows was the canary in the coal mine and he obviously wasn't comfortable with things on the track either post that match.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 5, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

After six matches our Team Rating is down 5% on our 2023 Team Rating.

That's not a long way off but it's still down.  Mostly made up from...

>  Clarry down 33% so far vs 2023

>  No Gus, statistically our 3rd best player in 2023

>  Rivers off just a tad but making up ground in the last few weeks

>  Petty a long way off his 2023 rating following his interrupted pre-season.

Personally feel he should not have been brought back as soon as we did.  I stated that at the time and happy to stand by this call.  At this level you cannot afford to play anyone who is/was this under-done.  I would also argue this for Clarry,  however who would we have brought in to replace for say Port or the Crows?  I would now suggest we use Rivers to cover for Clarry if he needs an extra week or two off to fully recover.  Better this than a recurrence!  Marty covers for Riv?

>  No Bowey (inj).

The Top 6 Rating is off 2023 by 4.5%   That's mostly the Clarry & Gus factor.  If Clarry was playing somewhere close to his 2023 Rating of '5.0' our Top 6 Rating so far in 2024 would be up by 2.5%!

A few significant factors going forward include... getting Clarry and Petty right (if Petty has to miss matches to do a mini pre-season then so be it).  Making sure Kozzy remains in the team and retains his early season form.  Getting McAdam and Melk fit, firing and pushing into this 22.  Getting better performances from our Bottom 6 players who are a fair way off 2023 levels.

Thanks DD some big variations for a number of key personal and that game didn’t help to many players stats. So glad that they have operated on Clarry’s finger, hope they hold him back to give it a chance to recover, agree with Petty he is so out of form it isn’t funny, get Fullarton into the team he could not perform any worse than Benny or Harry.!!

Doing some decent work today so far DZ including a nice low down mark on the lead courtesy of Brown dog and then goaled from 50!   Hopefully he can follow this up in the second half and stick his hand up to do just as you are suggesting.

Player Rating Review - Defenders

Christian Salem (Medium Defender  28yo  184cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

Salem has played 5 matches so far in 2024.  He started Rnd 5 vs the Lions but was subbed with a hamstring resulting in only 7% game time.  Due to this very early exit i have not included his Rnd 5 output for rating purposes.

Listed as a defender but also plays midfield minutes in some matches.

Player Rating Review - Defenders

Tom McDonald (Key Defender  31yo  195cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

Tom missed the opening 'zero' round but has since played the remaining 5 matches, switching from a Key Forward role in 2023 to his new role here of Key Defender.

It's worth noting that Player Ratings for Key Forwards and forwards in general are usually somewhat lower than roles played further up the ground eg; through the middle or back half, simply due to the more limited opportunities to rack up possessions, disposals, tackles & other involvements in general play.

Having said that, if said forward has a day out and is involved in alot of play, especially higher up the ground, and ends up kicking say 4 to 6 goals or more (for example) then the Player Rating will generally also reflect such a performance.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

I'm interviewing Melbourne Football Club's small forward Kade Chandler tomorrow for the Demonland Podcast. I'll be asking him about his road from being overlooked in the draft to his rookie listing to his apprenticeship as a sub to VFL premiership to his breakout 2023 season to mainstay in the Forwadline and much more. If you have any further questions let me know below and I'll see if I can squeeze them in. I will release the podcast at some time tomorrow so stay tuned.

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
