Derailed? There was no bridge and we Choo chooed right off the edge. The preseason has been a horror show and no one at the club is prepared to stand up and take any responsibility

No I’m not. When there’s this much public strife at an organisation someone has to take responsibility. I just want someone at the club to stand up. It won’t happen because there’s a softness to the whole joint.

What evidence do you have that anything happening with the players involved is the direct responsibility of the club and it's leaders? I've not seen a shred of evidence to suggest the blame should fall anywhere but at the feet of the individuals involved.

Oh Balderdash. If say the coach or the CEO or the President took the responsibility that you calling for you'd be the first one to stand up and whine that we are even more in the [censored] now.

Don't stress mate. Remember, Straight Set Simon and Pert have assured the footballing world that we have excellent culture.

Meh.

Plenty of teams only won 1 flag in a period of time. Will only use since 2000 as example.

2000 Bombers.

2004 Power.

2016 Dogs.

Plenty of teams been very successful without even winning a flag, like Crows, Lions, Giants, Freo, North, Saints, at various peroids of time. Biggest example probably 2000 Bombers, so dominant but yielded only 1 flag during this time. Comp is a lot more even these days, think we will see a lot more 'one hit wonders'.

Personally, didn't think I'd ever see a flag in my lifetime, so greatful to see at least one! Here's to many more!

What do you expect?

We were a laughing stock for all of my generation, we finally crack it and then we're back to being a failure after a flag and consecutive top 4 finishes in the two years since - really?

I'm proud of my club and I say a big F U to any that want to keep sh##ing on us.

Yes we're still to forfill that illusive premiership on the G, but not for lack of being in the race.  Biggrst one hit wonder, pfft.  Yeah nah.  And I'll say, we're down right now, but not out of the race for another just yet either, so a premature call at best.

This situation is yet another reflection of the current state of our society. When an individual or entity faces adversity, there is a tendency for others to join in criticism and scrutiny. A good old pile on.

Let’s just prove them wrong.

Surely the biggest one hit wonder failures would have to be;

Hawthorn 2008

Sydney 2005

North Melbourne 1996

Essendon 1993

Personally, if Melbourne's story follows that of our 1948 'one-hit wonder'I'm patient enough to wait for the rebound!

So was ours...

No one expected us to play finals let alone win it.

Difference between us and Dogs was that we were the best team all year, they were the best team of the finals.

They did it for 4 weeks, we did it for 26.

Too bloody right - well said

Two things particularly annoy me about rubbish like claiming the dees will have failed if we don't get another flag from this group.

One, it is widely accepted as fact (repeated ad nausea by the media, coaches and ex players) that it IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO WIN A FLAG. It is also accepted as fact that this is even more so the case with equalization than say 20 years ago (bombers say hi).

Two, many of those same pundits (and lets be honest, some DL posters) think our list is over rated.

Yet somehow us winning only one flag is some sort of failure? Please.

Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

Where is the narrative about the Cats taking 11 years to win flag after 2011 despite being in the top 4 or 8 the entire time? And having the most ridiculous  home ground advantage in the competition?

And the discussion also provides the haters a convenient out of we do win the flag this year - well they should have snagged another with their list.

People are quick to knock Pies, Blues and Tigers fans for being so one eyed and 'feral'.

Well, i wish we had more fans willing to fly the flag and push back against the nonsense constantly directed at our club.

We are an easy target in part because some of our fans be like:

'oh, yeah, you're right one flag would be a waste  given how talented our list is, which by the way isn't actually that good, over rated in fact by rose coloured glasses nuffy set, and nowhere near as good as that of the pies - by the way don't you just love Macrae, at least he knows how to talk to the media, unlike straight sets Simon'

Forgive my ignorance, but why are 1939 & 1955 included in that list ?

I dont disagree about pre-season - it has been horrific. But what exactly does standing up and taking responsibility mean? What would it take for you and the broader public to see that we are in fact taking this seriously and not burying our head in the sand?

My take:

1. Hearing Gawn yesterday was refreshing, i believe his account re: culture.

2. I think Sammy Edmund also said yesterday morning on SEN, that there is an unofficial ladder of  strikes that the AFL and club officials have access to. Surprisingly Melbourne is near the bottom of this despite what is being reported. If true, i am completely flabbergasted as to why that isn't discussed more openly in the media.  This is why i believe Pert and Goodwin were so confident in their radio interview re: Culture last year.

3. No doubt we are undertaking our own review on all of this stuff behind closed doors to ensure we are addressing the perceived cultural issues at the club.

4. I do have a few more points that i have self-redacted because it will likely cause me a ban. 30 days in the hole over xmas was pretty difficult.

So not sure what else we can do. If every bit of info the club has got on hand tells you we are strong culturally but you have these isolated incidents, why would you throw the baby out with the bath water.

Firstly stop spouting how good the culture is in public forums because it’s not. Secondly have the President and CEO acknowledge that things have gone wrong at the club and they’re working on making sure these things get sorted.  Basically what any good organisation would do right now is open the doors and let the breeze blow through. I’m not asking anyone get sacked, I’m a big believer in apologies and second chances. The fact your supporters forum can’t discuss this stuff should be enough for the club to publicly state what exactly is going on and what is being done to rectify/resolve it. The silence is deafening.

I expect that when criticism comes our way that our supporters do not go down the Collingwood/Richmond supporter pathway of being supportive in an obnoxious way.

I am allowed to be disgusted in the way this off season has gone but i still plan on going to over 20 games to support them.

You are allowed to proud of the club but also cross with how the last two seasons have gone imo.

I agree Rooster This all started April2021 and has simmered ever since The club has offered platitudes and zero substance This is no way to treat members and supporters and is no way to maintain or improve culture. The AFL are complicit as well.

Disgusted with how our preseason has gone?

Disgusted?

For pete's sake we've had one player get pinged last season (the news came out post season).

And with clarry, the club has handled a tricky situation super well and he has gone off and worked his backside off to get into AFL level shape.

The club has reintegrated him super well and  a player  many feared might take months to get back, IF AT ALL, is in the frame for round one selection.

Huge tick to clarry and the club.

Gus has had to retire through no fault of his own - or the clubs.

And we've had a handful of bog standard injuries, none from mismanagement as far as I'm aware.

All that after was generally accepted to be a successful trade and drafting period.

And that disgusts you?

Seriously, get a grip.

And perhaps turn of SEN, get off twitter, put down the hun and stop slavishly buying into the media's hysteria theatre.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
