The forward line problem shouldn't be a problem just go smaller. Schache is no good simple as that.

B: Lever, May, McVee

HB: Bowey, Tomlinson, Rivers

C: Windsor, Petracca, Langdon

HF: Billings, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Spargo, Fritsch, Chandler

IC: Howes, Sparrow, Laurie, Woewodin

SUB: Hore

We are running out of men, thought it would be a while before I see Hore play senior footy. With Salem, Oliver, Pickett, Petty, B. Brown, Turner, and McAdam possibly out he could get his chance.

This is scary 🤮

Can anyone who watched today, support my view that Shache could and should play in the opening round?

I don't think we will have much of a choice to be honest. JVR needs support. We can't have teams double teaming him with only Fritsch and a bevy of small forwards.

Schache is good on a lead and if he gets out the back of an opponent but if he is one on one with a strong defender he gets ragdolled.

SCG is the ground to go small. JVR/Fritch/McAdam(?) with Spargo, Billings, Chandler, ANB Lauire would be the way to go.

SCG is NOT the ground to go small. Small and tight meaning a lot of marking contests and less space to try to hit up pinpoint passes.

Great reporting here from Fox Footy not noticing or mentioning Petty leaving the track. You think that would be a bigger story.

It was probably written by AI based on a Bigfooty post.

Melky - on the bike, which I assumed was loaded, as he did like 10 sec bursts.  And one for the ladies - shirt off.

Really? Melksy… Shirt off? Why, I didn’t notice that at all. 🤭

Why would you say that? He’s putting in so much hard work to get his level of fitness up, and it shows. He’s come such a long way in two months.

Erhh why was he unfit to start with

Was an ongoing  issue at Adelaide

Why would he be any different with us?I hope he is improving but smacks of poor attitude to me sorry to say

Mcadam - doing my type of training, walking the boundary then finished up running the boundary with Reece Conca

Better than if he was doing my sort of training, which would have been just the walking part above.

And even then it would be more like strolling the boundary then finished up sitting under the shade of a linden tree.

Have to agree with all said by @Slartibartfast.

The session was just "meh", which perhaps is not unexpected given we don't want to be injuring any more players beyond the 9 sitting in rehab or doing their own thing.  And also we are getting to the serious stage, so all the hard work has been done, so to use @binman's analogy, we are probably tapering.

I would use Brayshaw on the wing. He deserves a game.

Why was he unfit to start with? I’ve heard (from several people including a relative of his) that Shane and Burgess didn’t work well together.

You hope he’s improving? In early December he was bent over, hands on knees, sucking in air after any exertion. It was a conspicuous sight. He’s currently so much fitter, the difference is huge.

It smacks of poor attitude? Maybe it appears that way to you, but I’ve spoken to him a bunch and his attitude is great. I’ve spoken to Kozzie about him, and Chocco and Perty as well as his relative whom I met last week. They only have positive things to say about him, that he’s determined to do well, he’s happy with us and with his training regimen.

Perhaps his demeanour and/or body language belies his enthusiasm and dedication. That, along with the fact that he’s a quiet, unassuming person might explain why you’d think you’re seeing a poor attitude.

Salem did so much conditioning in his off-season that he can now stagger his pre-season which the club are now particularly keen to do given his history of thyroid related illness.

Yes had a brief conversation with Salo”s dad one morning around Xmas time and he told me Salo had been training that morning.

Didn't he have injuries last season, pretty sure that was the reason.

Very nice morning for a run around, not too much wind and temperature is perfect. Looks to be about 32 to 34 in full training.

The drills were done with skill and precision. Mainly controlled by Taylor Whitford (VFL coach)

The occasional reference to the super-bowl appeared.

Our new young players lead the way with their skill sets. Windsor, K. Brown, rarely miss, Tholstrup if he slips up, the next action is perfect and the effort he makes is great. Setting great standards. Jefferson has worked well on his tackling, he brought a few down in the sims, taking some marks and getting separation. Sestan doesn't have a defensive game, will need to improve himself through Casey, I reckon.

They continue to rotate quite a few through the mids during sims.

They split into the lines at one stage, mids (McQualter) had Gus, Viney, Tracc, Windsor, Spargo, K.Brown, Langdon, Laurie, Max, KFW, Sparrow, Taj, Verral.

Backs (Chaplin), May, Lever, Adams, McVee, Rivers, Hore, Howes, Bowey, Tomlinson

Forwards (Stafford), JVR, Fritta, Kossie, Billings, Jefferson, ANB, Chandler, Sestan, Tholstrup, Schache.

Loved K.Brown's (untouchable), Sparrow's, (field kicking) Viney's (making links), Adam's (holding JVR), May's, (intercepts) and Max's (marking), during the sims today. Sims were run by Goody.

Have you noticed any difference McQualter has made as compared with, I guess, Yze?

I was behind the fence next to him a lot of the session and it seemed to me from conversations and interactions that he may have hamstring awareness or an issue there. He didn't do nearly as much running as Oliver and Salem and they both came up to him at one point and rubbed his hamstring mucking around saying how's it feeling etc. May only be a small issue but feel like there has to be something there because it didn't look like he was trying to rack up the kms or anything today?

With Salem running laps with Oliver, I wonder whether Salem is really rehabbing something or just being used as company for Oliver as he continues with his re-integration. It would make sense to me if the club was helping Oliver by making sure he wasn't always doing the boring stuff (running laps) on his own.

It might be the company thing. They went overseas to Europe together at the end of the 2022 season, so they must get along ok.

100% has some awareness in the legs. I’m no sports injury specialist but if his running today was solely a fitness issue as has been suggested then he is a long way off from playing.

I don’t believe that to be the case. Whilst his conditioning when arriving at the club probably wasn’t up to scratch as has also been hinted at he has shown some impressive moments on the track that I have witnessed and I would still have picked him in the opening round given that Kozzy is out.

Today he 100% looked to be carrying something and did look uncomfortable at times. Most likely hammy awareness. Again I am not qualified to make that assessment but I wasn’t the only one to observe that.

If that is the case then he may be pushing up hill for opening round but I am choosing to start the year positively and hope he can play in one of the practice matches and then tear the SCG apart.

McQualter is much louder. Alot of what he says is about geeing them up. There is some strategic emphasis and he gets them having an intention/purpose, which he constantly calls them to act on, during drills.

Yze was 'quietly' going about his business.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
